Short walk from Kay's house, to the dog park, then down the bike/walking path that heads to the ocean (but we didn't get anywhere near the ocean ...).

Pickleball 1:30:00 [3]

Pickleball in Lagua Niguel. They have a very fine facility; two non-used tennis courts with many cracks, and weeds growing up through the cracks, were totally renovated into EIGHT nice pickleball courts, which get a lot of use. Cheryl and I latched onto a group of 6-8 or so people roughly our level and had lots of enjoyable games.

Not a workout, but I'm logging it to get the GPS trace. This was a 2-hour, 12.99 mile boat ride in the ocean off of Dana Point, CA, with the objective of spotting some whales or dolphins. It was a modest success, as we did see two humpback whales, although not too much of them was out of the water, and one dolphin. And a nice day for a cruise on the ocean, even if there hadn't been any marine mammal sitings.

The AP elevation analysis was interesting -- it said that we had 4187 feet of climb! Kind of odd since we were at sea level, obviously, the entire time. What it did was assume we were on the ocean floor, quite clearly not the case, but interesting information since it have a nice profile of the depths that we were at. The boat operator and crew said the best place to spot whales was near the edge of the continental shelf, so that's where we hung out most of the time.

Walking 1:05:55 [3] 1.88 mi (35:03 / mi) +160ft 32:26 / mi
shoes: Saucony Excursion TR8 2015

Canyon Overlook Trail (just east of the tunnel) in Zion Natl Park. Relatively short, but definitely some climb (but not nearly as much as AP computed the climb), and many slightly nerve-wracking places where there are very significant sheer drops alongside the trail. In most but not all of these places, there was a railing giving some re-assurance. Some fantastic views were the reward for making the hike.

Walking 26:38 [2] 1.0 mi (26:38 / mi) +98ft 24:22 / mi
shoes: Merrell hiking boots

Weeping Rock trail, in Zion.

Apparently GPS's (at least this one) don't work too well in narrow, extremely deep canyons. :) It said we covered 2.78 miles and climbed 760 feet or so. The GPS trace is quite comical. The first 0.05 miles or so makes sense, the rest it totally fiction.

Walking 51:34 [2] 2.2 mi (23:26 / mi) +58ft 22:52 / mi
shoes: Merrell hiking boots

Riverside Walk, in Zion. Again, GPS track was totally fictitious. The distance and climb are taken from the Zion hiking trail summary. The trail actually goes along the east side of the stream. At that point, the canyon is extremely narrow and extremely deep, so it is quite understandable that GPS technology is totally unreliable.

AP analysis said we climbed 4800 feet, rather than the actual 58 feet.

Walking 45:18 [2] 1.6 mi (28:19 / mi) +51ft 27:29 / mi
shoes: Merrell hiking boots

Lower Emerald Pond trail. The canyon is much wider at this point, although still quite deep, and the GPS trace was pretty accurate on this trail.
6 PM

Walking 10:00 [1] 0.43 mi (23:15 / mi) +25ft 22:03 / mi
shoes: Merrell hiking boots

This was our walk from the shuttle drop-off to where we had parked our car.

Trace is totally FUBAR, as I apparently left it on during the first part of our drive out of Zion, probably until its battery ran down.

Medium long and pretty hilly walk in Bryce Canyon Nat'l Park, with Cheryl. Gorgeous day -- mid 70's, low humidity, of course, it's Utah, no wind, sunny.

Shorter, less hilly hike, in the far southern part of Bryce Canyon Nat'l Park.

Pickleball 1:00:00 [2]

Pickleball in St. George, UT (one of the "meccas" of pickleball in the US). Unfortunately, most pickleballers were playing in or watching the competition in the Huntsman world senior games, which we also saw some of (very impressive level of play). We went to another venue in St. George, played with just the 2 of us for a while, then hooked up with another couple who arrived shortly after we did. They were beginners but very athletic, and picked up the game quickly. We split up partners to make thing a bit more even, and we had three enjoyable games.

Walking 11:46 [1] 0.3 mi (39:27 / mi) +2ft 39:12 / mi
shoes: Saucony Excursion TR8 2015

Very short but quite scenic walk in Snow Canyon State Park just outside of St. George, UT.
