HR data. Durand Intermediate course. First orienteering I've done in ages. in fact, I think it might be the first forest O I've done since my major injuries in Nov. 2020, other than following Fred on the White course. I did do the Highland score-O a few months ago, but that is hardly forest.
Had trouble right off the bat with #1 -- not finding it, but getting to it. No contour lines are shown on the map near it, but there was a steep slope going down to the actual flag, which was on a stream. I saw multiple tracks of people who had clearly slid down the slope, and I tried my best to avoid doing that, but landed on my rear end in mud, like others had no doubt done. Richard Burgey got to the control right after me and had similar problems. I made the dubious choice to continue eastward from the control to the trail I wanted, rather than work my way back up the steep muddy hill. I first got tangled in some sticker bushes, then found my feet sinking nearly a foot into the marsh a few times. I finally made my way up to the trail, where I met up with Richard, who had gone the other slightly longer way. So, I suppose not real harm done by my route choice decision, but it really wasn't pleasant.
From 3 to 4, I took a somewhat direct line which meant more climbing and descending, instead of a longer route with less climb -- not sure if my choice was right or not. Not much else to comment on -- several places where there were multiple options of routes but to me they didn't seem different enough to mention.
When I finished, I was 3rd on the course, 10 minutes behind Tyler, and only 6 seconds out of 2nd place. I suspect I moved down a bit, once all results were in.
