Orienteering race 1:22:18 [4]*** 9.2 km (8:57 / km) +265m 7:49 / km
ahr:150 max:170 spiked:10/16c shoes: VJ twister
final race
another disaster, completely fell apart. no contact with the map, poor routes and execution.
physically I feel great, but I am leaving here with great disappointment.

Friday Jul 29

more of the same - swamps, green, swamps, mosquitos, blueberries, mosquitos and swamps
had enough of this terrain. picked blueberries on the way in and found myself standing in a fire ant mound. got bit a few times and did a funny little dance while swinging my shirt at them all over my legs. I looked up at a japanese lady smiling at me, then to my surprise she smacked me in the cheek. she showed me her hand with my blood on her finger. mosquito I guess. I can't wait to get to colorado where you can run faster than the bugs and attack badgers.

Orienteering race 1:17:30 [4]*** 8.3 km (9:20 / km) +275m 8:01 / km
ahr:153 max:168 spiked:12/18c shoes: VJ twister
qualifier 2
again lost contact and focus. two bigger blunders and one major route choice problem. this was more difficult nav than the first race, but not that hard if you slow down. I can not force myself to stop and read the map when I lose contact. usually i can keep running and pick up something to re-orient myself, but here it was very difficult because it is so generally flat and the vegetation makes it difficult to see changes in the relief.

Wednesday Jul 27

Orienteering 45:00 [2]*** 5 km (9:00 / km) +150m 7:50 / km
shoes: VJ twister
model 2
thicker veg than first race. open areas are the best for running. must find the white and yellow areas as they are going to much faster than anything green. swamps appear to be crossable, but slow. not as many tracks will form for late starters.

Tuesday Jul 26

Orienteering race 1:07:18 [4]*** 7.5 km (8:58 / km) +222m 7:49 / km
ahr:156 max:171 spiked:14/18c shoes: VJ twister
qualifier 1
some really harsh terrain, some really open/easy areas at the end.
not a great run. few errors around the flag and a hard time finding a decent route through the green. got lucky in a few places too. the splits will probably show I lost more time than I think.

Monday Jul 25

Orienteering 45:00 [2]*** 5 km (9:00 / km) +200m 7:30 / km
shoes: VJ twister
model event 1
ran some, walked some
very open areas and thick/wet corridors between them. some detailed areas, no rock and not very steep either. feel ok

Saturday Jul 23

E 55:00 [2]

with the edmonton hash. they are a funny group; the hare follows everyone around the trail, kinda like a mother hen watching her flock or a shepard leading the herd of sheep. they are also way too nice up here. not that there is anything wrong with that.

Friday Jul 22

Event: World Masters Games

Orienteering race (relay) 32:17 [4]*** 4.4 km (7:20 / km) +175m 6:07 / km

relay event at wmoc. first place with pavlina and greg b.

genesis sprint at northfield mt. MA with erino
great race for us. lot's of climbing and route choice, which helped separate the teams. Cool O cp 'C' at the top of a cliff.
humid and overcast, not optimal, but decent conditions and no cramps.

Thursday Jul 14

E 1:45:00 [2]5.7 mi (18:25 / mi)
shoes: NB AR #1
somewhere in redding. substantial bushwhack. finished in the dark.

Sunday Jul 10

Adventure Race race 8:30:00 [4]40.0 mi (12:44 / mi)
Genesis 12 hour @ Cockaponsett
2nd, but 3rd coed. 1 hour penalty for something that did not seem too severe in my opinion.

Bethel Firecracker 8k road race
felt stiff from yesterdays sprints and hemmed and hawed about running easy vs racing. ended up going out fairly easy, but the competitive juices are still flowing from yesterday. pushed the heart rate up from 150's to 160's by small increments each mile and finnished up by 170. 24th out of about 200 starters, winning time just over 26 minutes.
calves are sore now, but legs feel fine. time to taper for saturday.
bike (road) 48:35 [3]14.6 mi (3:19 / mi)
ahr:130 max:148 shoes: specialized road
ride to my bro's house for bbq and fireworks, what an inferno we had going. almost lost an eye.

Sunday Jul 3

Event: Indenpendence O' Day - Sprints

reserved warm up/down 24:00 [2]
shoes: VJ twister
before each sprint, nothing to fast or steep, just getting the HR up a bit. some stretching before the first one.

interesting side note: it was about 5.5 days of diarhea, stomach/intestinal problems which ended this morning with a nice .... well, I think you get the picture.
Orienteering race 16:41 [5]*** 2.56 km (6:31 / km) +95m 5:30 / km
ahr:157 max:165 spiked:10/12c slept:8.0 shoes: VJ twister
stage 1 DVOA Independence sprints
saw a lot of movement, so I thought the course would be open, but what I did not see was the briar and nettles and PI. Made it a little difficult finding a way through the edge of the fields as I don't like any of the above. I had one bad exit on 6 and a run by at 4 for about 18 seconds. Even effort throughout.
Orienteering race 17:42 [5]*** 2.8 km (6:19 / km) +75m 5:34 / km
ahr:157 max:163 spiked:12/13c shoes: VJ twister
Stage 2 DVOA Independence Sprints
This was not as easy as the first one. I thought it was a great course. Technically I was good, physically I felt heavy. I blew 5 by not knowing what the feature was - lost 7 seconds staring at the cliff. About as surprised as David Zebrewski at the results.
Orienteering race 22:08 [4]*** 3.24 km (6:50 / km) +95m 5:57 / km
ahr:157 max:164 spiked:8/12c shoes: VJ twister
Stage 3 DVOA Independence Sprint
Sloppy run, but this was a sloppy map and park. Felt like an adventure run with the trails sort of mapped for general direction and location, but not resembling the actual trail in the terrain. lots of unmarked turns and the intersections were off enough to make you wonder how far left you had to go. still, it was nice to get out and run and see new places and old friends.
