Orienteering race (rogaine) 14:00:00 [3]** 20.0 mi (42:00 / mi)

Laurentides Rogaine AKA 2007 North American Rogaine Champs
Ste. Adele, Quebec Canada

Racing with Dave Lamb a Eastern Mountain Sports teamate. Dave usually focuses on longer AR events and I do mostly sprints so we race together on a couple times a year. those races tend to be long for me and short for him and in the 12 hour range.
this would be Dave's first rogaine. he's done some orienteering, but nothing like this. He found out quick how much it is like AR, just without the paddling and biking.
The night before we met up for dinner with two of our other EMS teamates, Chad Denning and Dimitry Drozdov, who would be doing the rogaine for training - both physical and navigation. neither one of them is a true navigator as Dave and I usually take that role so they going to get there feet wet real fast ; )
pre-race prep in the hotel was easy as there were no routes to plan or bikes to build. we counted calories and packed food, filled bladders and chose clothing that would be minimal, but enough should the weather be fowl. we tried to sleep, but the a/c was not functioning in our room. awoke several times to pee and then again when it started to rain. rain, my enemy. great!
finally woke up and started to immediately eat and drink. we packed up the car and stopped for breakfast at this joint where you gave your order and then rolled a pair of die. if you get double 6's your order is free. nobody got lucky, but the food was cheap anyway. we finally arrived at the race site and did some more packing of packs and changing of clothes. the rain continued. then we were called for the pre-race meeting where Francis gave his two language instructions so both the english and french speakers could understand. if was funny listening to the canucks laugh at everything he said. I guess he threw in a few extras for their entertainment. we finally got our maps and we were off. we decided to borrow a table in the small cafe for our planning. nobody said we couldn't so it worked out great.
the race planning for me is the hard part and it was at this moment that the three others started to throw questions at me. the other team eventually did there own planning so it was now up to dave and me to do our own thing. we pieced together some things, estimated some distances and came up with a rough route that went south, then east, north and then west. the distance was somewhere around 90km. we put contact paper on the maps, laminated the descriptions and tied up the punch card for easy carrying. I made a last minute run to the car for my pack and decided to put my rain "coat" on and headed for the start and was greeted by the teams leaving already. As I approached Dave I said I think we should do the course in the reverse of what we decided. he said ok and we turned around and headed off towards 31. the reason for the change was that there were many points on the south side and it made more sense to leave them as our last choice to pick and choose as we had time. the north section was full of points, but they were spread out. if we left that area to last we would have had less options come morning.
the order of controls for the day (not sure where we were at midnight) was:
31-43-62-75-76-65-80-23-73-91-51-60-72-52-42-54-32-35-56-40-36?

we lost time finding 76 (5 min), leaving 76 and going to 65 (15 min), between 91 and 51 attempting to cross the river (7 min), crossing the river from 60 to 72 (5 min)

I stopped to change socks and apply foot creme at 80 and stopped to wring out my socks and apply foot creme after 72, stopped again to wring out socks and apply foot creme at 40

we ate while we walked/ran. we refilled bladders at 80 and 40. dave carried a 3 liter bladder and two water bottles, while I carried a two liter bladder. I drink a lot, so dave carried extra. I usually claimed at least one of the bottles.

during our first day we encountered a handful of teams, but happened to see Phil and Jeff on the way to 31, at 76, at 80, at 60 on the way up to 54 while we were descending from it. weird to see them so much as we had slightly different routes and moving faster.

river paddle. water was moving well. usually it is low and you drag across the rocks, but with the rain last night it was much better. strong current on the return. came out of the water in 1st.
Adventure Race race (bike) 2:25:00 [4]** 14.3 mi (10:08 / mi) +300m 5:55 / km

nailed everything but the elite extra cp. missed a turn. got caught up riding with another team and did not look at themap. caught the mistake before they did and saw other teams make the same mistake. still we were the first team to get to cp b. made some better route choices to the next two controls. passed the trail medic just as he was done wrapping up this guys head with a bandage. looked like he was attacked on the chin by a rock. so then things got weird. I guess you would say it was a AOWN sighting. this guy, who we saw earlier walking towards the pond with his fishing pole, now had his own pole dangling in the breeze. he was buck naked right there on the edge of the trail with the fishing pole in one hand and his tackle box in the other. lucky for me and my teammate he was busy scurrying away from us. only caught the "tail end" of the show and it was not worthy of an encore or bow.
It's not unusual to see a naked bear in these woods, but a bare naked man is.
Adventure Race race (trek) 1:27:00 [4]** 5.0 mi (17:24 / mi) +223m 9:30 / km

trek section. nothing to note except it was hot - really hot. we still managed to run most of the flats and downhills with an occasional short uphill. I let jen nav. for a bit. did just fine.

Genesis Adventure Race #4 @ Allamuchy state park in NJ, exit 25A

Friday Aug 3

Note
decided to do the NA rogaine champs with a EMS teammate. I don't think he is old enough to be a vet., but that's ok. looking forward to a great course. hopefully better than the last one I did.
