Orienteering race (rogaine) 3:15:00 [5]*** 11.7 mi (16:39 / mi) +520m 9:06 / km
spiked:10/10c slept:2.0 shoes: Golite Trail Fly
regaine loop 3 after rest period for the third block
slept total of 3 hours between loops. this loop was the easiest with only 10 controls and relatively easy checkpoints. uneventful and quite pleasant time to be outdoors. huge descent to "town" with a monster climb up the hill from dryden lake. ran w/ scott pleban (caught me at the spruce tree near dryden lake) for most of the second half of the loop. we worked together on finding the flags. two lights are better than one. found 69 in daylight and wondered how I missed it the night before. usually easier to find them at night with the reflectors giving up the flag location from a distance. returned on time and ate some fine eggs and sausage. sleep time.

Orienteering race (rogaine) 2:40:00 [5]*** 10.9 mi (14:40 / mi) +420m 8:09 / km
spiked:12/12c slept:2.0 shoes: TEVA lite
regain loop 4, slept 2 hours prior
I really like the sleep possibilities in the race.
basically needed to grab everything on the yellow barn map in 3 hours. I knew it was 15 km plus and everyone was telling me how thick and slow it was over there. I found the opposite true, it was great running and I had no problems finding open routes. nothing like blue hills! felt strong this loop and I told ann it was the Redbull cause "redbull gives your wings".
overall this was a tough race. I like the format and actually think it is harder than a true 24 hour rogaine. The pace was fast and I like that. I also like that I can sleep in between, something I can't do in a 24 hour. will have to wait to see if I do it again though. nice job by anne and barb and all the other volunteers. thanks.

regaine loop 1
south east area of map. quickly picked a route and was out of the start within 1 minute of the whistle. I had spent night after night thinking about this race and was intent on running out to robinson hollow on my first loop and using the five hour block. these were the furthest controls on the map and it was key that I did them with fresh legs. I made great time and was able to pick up a few unplanned cp's on my way in. I saw scott, charlie and mark out there, everyone doing different routes. got back in time and set up my next loop. because I was eating the whole time I did not eat anything at the TA. I changed clothes, socks and shoes for the night and grabbed a smaller pack and my light. I brought money to buy some water at the store. this would be about 1 hour into my run. my next loop would be 4 hours in the deep dark forests of the southwest quadrant. My last memories of this area was being 45 minutes overtime at a snogaine. no chance of that..

Orienteering race (rogaine) 4:13:00 [5]*** 14.9 mi (16:58 / mi) +650m 9:17 / km
spiked:12/13c slept:1.0 shoes: TEVA heavy
regaine loop 2, I like to run to the farthest part of the map and work my way back in. two reasons, one I can pick up the high points early and drop other controls later if I have to and not the reverse. two I can enjoy a nice leisurely run early (especially after a hard first loop) and then hit the hard stuff later. everything was going great and I had a few bailout options. I dropped 20 and then as I made a turn for 39 I dropped that too. I decided to pick up 3 twenty pointers and 69. I hit the first three easy, but my headlamp started to blink. thinking it would go black in 5 minutes I picke up my pace. probably not the smartest thing as this was a difficult approach through some thick and muddy woods. I attempted to replace my batteries, but realized I brought only 3 for a light that runs on 4. great move joe. I fumbled as I got near and eventually had to bail. I made a mad dash to the road and got turned around several times, not to mention taking probably the worst trail in the forest with blowdowns and mud and just about everything you could think of attempting to keep me from getting back on time!! well, I was 13 minutes late which = 39 minutes later start next run loop - ouch!
my initial thoughts were I need to sleep so I submitted my intention sheet for the third block as a 3 hour rest and 3 hour run, but I reconsidered my approach after realizing what this left me with - a 3 hour run minus 39 minutes is only, do the math with me - 2 hours 21 minutes. there was not much I could accomplish in that time. I needed 3 hours to do the northeast quadrant and by my estimates 3 plus to do the northwest. I decided to do a 2 rest/4 run and take the penalty. I had a couple bowls of soup and I slept from about 10:45 to 2am. I now had 3:21 for my northeast loop and easily finished that and also had time to go back and get 69 (in the daylight).
