2 hours on the spinning bike in the circuit gym. My mind is a fortress. Did a serious of 5 min hill climbs, then a 10, then a 15. Saw the Tullies (maxi and mini). If you're gonna climb a mountain, SOS by Stonebridge is THE song to do it to.

I then went down and thought it would be nice to do some squats, I aint done weights since well before the JK last year, so I was interested to see what I could lift. I warmed up and then did 4 reps, rested, put the weight up and repeat. 40 fine, 50, 60, fine, 70 ok, 80 hmm, 90 quite heavy, 100 yeah, this is heavy. 100 kind of makes me feel like my spine is being crushed when I take it off the rack. Still, it seems that cycling has kept my legs pretty damn strong.

I then did some extensive stretching and ornithology.

5 hours from entering to leaving the gym. Nice.

Legs feeling a little bit heavy, could have still training, but felt it would be nice to have a rest day. Went to Sainsbury's and bought a massive steak and some yorkshire puddings for for dinner (with gravy, oh yes!). Had a nap this afternoon, which turned into a bit of a sleep. Never mind. Watched a video on youtube of Tour de France crashes. I aint had one yet (mainly due to a lack of riding in the Tour de France) but I'm sure one is not too far round the corner. Nearly had one on the wednesday ride actaully, mainly because loads of punters turn up who fail to signal when there are potholes etc in the road, which helps when your riding 25mph wheel to wheel and your the 12th man, cos you can't really see anything. Like a big stinkin' pile of roadkill that nearly dropped me to the 'mac. Luckily I've got crazy mad skillz so kept it upright with just a small splattering of brains and guts. Lucky, as there was a car up my arse as well and I didn't really fancy going under it. Or over it. Round it would have been ok.

Went down to the gym to run round Holyrood Park and do a bit of stretching. I ran round Holyrood Park (the Queen wasn't in) and did some stretching. Steroids man was training today. He looks rediculous, he's one of those people whose body type is not muscular, like most of us, but has taken so much weight gain, mega mass and steroids and done enough training that he has defied nature and got the torso of a greek god. However when you have a pea-head and chicken legs it makes you look like a total tool. Some people look stupid because that's the way the are and there is nothing they can do about it, this guy has spend thousands of squid and done thousands of hours of training to look that way. Tool. I think my thighs are fat.
Cycling 2:10:00 [3]36.0 mi (3:37 / mi)
EUCC training run. In shorts and reppin' the maillot ā pois rouge, now if you're gonna turn up dressed as king of the mountains then you've got to be able to back it up. Fortunately for me, Silas who is a cat 2 rider for VeloEcosse was just cruising at the back, and I got payback against the Oggster for his crushing demolition of me the other week. After an epic wait at the top of the hill we decided to leave captain slow to die. There was much rejoicing. Clemmie (female, blonde, hot) was feeling a bit sick and the pace was a bit high, so I did the noble thing and pushed her up all the hills. Absolutely no alteria motive. Despite wearing shorts no tan lines are appearing yet, it may take a little longer, but it'll be worth it.

Went to the gym after for a sauna and stretch. Watched some of the girls basketball game, they sucked. Then watched the guys game. I cam in near the end of the 2nd quarter, and they were about 15 points down. Playing Heriot-Watt. They had brought along loads of wags and wannabe's, and were making a bit too much noise for our liking. They kept whistling and chanting during free-throws, which just aint cricket. They were cheering every basket like it was a match winner made after the buzzer, and the clearly didn't know anything about the sport. Anyway, we started giving them some chant back. And the boys picked up their game. By the 4th quarter they were only a few points behind, slowly clawing back. With about 4 mins to go they took the lead for the first time. And then started edging ahead. The Watt just couldn't handle the abuse from the gallery and the fact they had been giving it lip all game and were now losing. They must have felt like such fools when the buzzer went, turning a 15 ponit lead into a 10 point spanking. Ha ha, that'll teach them to come to our manor and talk smack.

Went down the gym in the morning for a little spin. I didn't feel like riding in the rain with 30mph winds today. Sat on the bike for 45 mins. Did some stretching. Had a sauna. Job done. Think I might go running tonight.

Woke up next to GG this morning, always a pleasure. Cooked him breakfast and everything. Structural geology was immense, can't get enough of the Mariana Trench back arc system, love it. Went for the banter jog with the Haries. Gave Coombs some abuse but he wasn't listening. Went through Waverly station, which was nice. Also went down the danger path of death. At one end was a big fence and signs saying path closed, at the other end was a similar big fence and a sign saying path close, in the middle was a really really nice path with nothing wrong with it at all. It was probably one of the best paths I have been down this week.

Note
In cycling shit happens. Last year when shit happened to race favourite and american, Levi Leipheimer, the american officials decided to change UCI rules. If you crash out in the last 3km of a race you get given the same time as the people you were with, due to the aggresive nature and high pace of the sprint finish, which is a good rule. However last year Levi got caught in a big crash a few kilometers from the safe zone, causing him to lose his race leaders jersey that he had just one in the prologue the day before. Americans don't like losing stuff (except dignity and respect) so they decided to come up with a new rule, the Levi Rule, which increased the safe zone to 10km, amazingly this now meant that Levi fell in the safe zone and kept his leaders jersey. Hurrah for USA.

Yesterday, Manx god of cycling, Mark Cavendish got caught up in a crash about 8km from the finish. Being a man he didn't cry like a little girl like Levi, he instead got back on his bike and starte his way back to the peleton. Creashing at 60kph tends to fuck your bike, his derailleur was a bit broken, so he went to the team car and a mechanic fixed it. As per usual in every professional cycle race in the world ever, Cav held onto the car for a bit. He then worked his way through the support caravan, drafting off all the team cars to get back to the peleton. Cyclists have a lot of respect for each other, and wont attack when a man is down, and the peleton had slowed to let Cav back in, as he is a shit-hot sprinter. Having got back in in then went and won the sprint. What a legend, especially when his lead-out man had decided not to lead him out but to go for the win instead, he obviously didn't win because he isn't the Cav.

Anyway, so last year they invented a rule to save a favourite rider, well this year they decided that Cavendish should be penalised, and they gave him a 20s penalty. Cheeky bastards. Still, he'll have more chances for great tour victories, unlike Levi because he rides for the Kazakh Dope Service who aint being invited to any races. They even have the audacity to bitch about it. "Why aint we been invited?". How about because for the last 2 years your riders have been caught doping and have brought the sport to the brink of collapse.

Why anyone would have joined Astana I don't know, Levi, Klöden and Contator are all idiots. Plus the drug taking bastards are still getting their ass kicked by a non-pro tour clean team wearing argyle...

69 miles! And I didn't even have to alter my route. Went out with the EUCC, which was a mistake as captain slow was there again. If I was that bad at something, I just wouldn't do it, I especially wouldn't do it and force people to wait for you all the time whilst they are trying to train, and there is absolutely no way I would do an Iron-Man. What on earth is she thinking about. That's the equivilant of a lump of mud entering an Iron Man. She aint a man, and she certainly aint made of iron. Maybe her bike is, maybe that is why she is so slow. I doubt it, though. I think she's just rubbish. I have no tolerance.

GG's stopped over tonight, we'll be sleeping together soon...

After too long a lie in and severaql videos on youtube I decided to stop being a softcock, man up and ride in the wind. On the way out this means riding with the wind, which is nice, but I kept the effort down nice and low so I would have plenty of energy to get back in. Highpoint: speed 25mph, HR 138. Lowpoint: speed 13mph, HR 171. On the same piece of road, just in oposite directions. Wasn't as bad as I though on the way back, I just assumed the position and thought of Ullrich.

If taxi drivers spent their whole time driving, why are they so bad at it?148

Another windy day, I was semi up for going for a ride, bearing in mind what the peleton in the ToC had ridden through for 7 hours yesterday. Cleverly I dedicded to go for a fun instean. Went up to KB and ran round Blackford for a bit. Warmed up, just as it started raining, ran 40 mins "fast" (that's a relative term) and then warmed down just as it stopped raining. It was could to have a bit of pace in my training. Got attacked by a dog bitch. Afterwards my knees really really hurt when I was sitting down after my shower, wierd. I had lunch and forgot about it. They didn't hurt when running, and it was only for a few minutes after. A bit wierd. I was running on tracks too, no pounding on the 'mac.

Went down to CSE for a sauna and had over an hour of stretchy time. Most of which doubled up as pervy time. I've changed my mind about the gym, it is a good place. Going up to girls in peach tops when they don't know how to use a machine is also a very good idea. The gym is definitely a good place.

Edinburgh had the wind today, so no chance of heading out on the roads, I wasn't really up for crawing back into a 30mph headwind. Decided to head down the the gym and sit on the bikes there for a bit. After sitting on one of them for a while I decided to start pedalling. I soon realised why I hate riding the bikes in the gym. Mainly, because the gym is full of those annoying people who go to the gym. It also doesn't help that whoever it was who designed gym bikes has never actually been on a real bike. The geometry is all over the shop. I started on the fantastic cross-country setting, cranked the resistance quite high, then waited a while before I slyly turned it down again, I didn't want to look like I didn't even know what resistence to ride on. Was going to go an hour, but really really couldn't stick it, so sacked out after 40mins. Oh well. I tried.

Note
I can't believe I actaully cleaned the kitchin. Cleaned my bike as well, but then I love my bike so that was always gonig to happen. I don't love our kitchin. I do love food though, and I guess without a kitchins food would severely suffer in this world. It's like when a really annoying person has a hot friend, you tolerate them to get to the friend. Take the rough with the smooth. Speaking of which, crunchy peanut butter is so much better than smooth.

Wee jog round the meadows, 2 laps. Calfs were tight as tight-rope walker's tightest rope, so thought I'd go out for a loostener and then do a bit of stretching before I head out the EUCC for a magical mystery tour of East Lothian.

One day I might go for 3 laps. One day...

Wednesday = sports day. Lots of sporty action going down, I went on the afternoon ride with EUCC. Not a very big group today. And only me and Aiden had legs, so we spent the whole ride at the front taking the wind. I accept that we have riders of all standards, but what really annoys me is when a person is pretty crap anyway, but then goes and does laps round the seat in the morning and then turns up to the club ride tired so we have to wait for her all the fucking time. She couldn't even sit in on a wheel. If you're that shit you shouldn't even be training twice a day. I'm getting tempted not to go to these rides anymore, they are just too stop start. It didn't help that the level-crossing came down about 3 hours before the train came past.

Had an ice bath, and a saunu and a stretch. Watched the guys basketball team stick it to Aberdeen. Got a text saying that the girls lost their BUSA qualifying by 1 point, oh dear. Bet that was a fun 6 hour minibus journey back up. I went to our new local. Which had 3 police cars + an ambulance outside and blood stains on the window and pavement. I live in a nice area. Apparently some guy jot jumped by some neds. The barstaff gave us a big dish of free olives. Free olives always taste nice. Then went to pairtree for a quickone. The OC was conspicuous by its absence, no suprise there. Then headed down to Shaghai for the night. Met the mighty DT and cranked out the polka-dot king of the mountains jersey. The bouncer wasn't to impressed:

"What's that?"
"King of the mountains Jersey"
"Looks like king of the gays jersey to me"

Still, the punters were loving it. Good times.

Thor (thunder god, not Hushovd) is once again pleased, and keeps glorious training weather over Edinburgh. Normally on a Monday I'm in uni 9-5 and so just go for a wee jog in the evening, plus i'm normally recovering from the weekend. Seeing as how lectures aint on this week and it's sunny and nice I thought I just go for a wee jog on the bike. Cadence; high. Heart-Rate; low. That was the aim and that's what I did, evening if it did mean crawling up the hill from Musselburgh, in the granny ring, in public. Despite keeping my heart-rate really low I still managed to keep a pretty good speed. It's either because I'm amazing and really fit, or that there was literally no wind today. The Forth estuary looked like a calm mill pond. A really big estuarine mill pond with oil tankers on it, but still, I aint ever seen it that calm before.

I fucked my thumb yesterday (medically, not sexually) which only really becomes a problem when squeezing my water bottle or playing playstation. I don't actually have a playstation, so that's not really a problem. But it did hurt when I squeezed my bottle (and by bottle I mean bottle, not penis), but I seemed to always forget and always used the same hand. I think it's just habit. I've thought about habit a bit, an notcied that I always do loads of things the same. I always unclip my right foot when stopping. I always use my left hand for my bottle, right hand for swearing. I always put my right sock on first, and my right shoe. Sometimes I put my left sock on just to be a bit crazy.

I watched the prologue of the Tour of California last night. Some good viewing of a 2.1mile blitz round Stanford University. The Brit Pack did well, Millar 9th, Cavendish 8th and Wiggins 2nd. Fabian Cancellara was the man today though, 4 seconds ahead of Wiggins. That's why he gets to wear the rainbow jersey.

Banter jog with Haries, went round Arthur's seat. Legs felt pretty good, even on road on going down hill. A little bit nippy once the sun had gone down, but definitely weather for naughty shorts. Followed that with an ice bath, followed that with a sauna.

Came back, had dinner and started watching tour of California. Now we all know american commentators are annoying. But these ones are really really really annoying, and not in the normal totally over the top enthusiasm way, they just know nothing about cycling. Yesterday was the time trial, where everyone starts seperately, with big numbers on, wearing team kit in a specific order, and there would only ever be 3 or 4 people on the course at once, yet they still struggled with working out who everyone was. Twats. Tonight the peleton have just turned on the gas to catch the break away man, but I can't hear about that because they are interviewing some cancer survivor. I'm not being harsh, but the only thing special thing she has done since surviving cancer is not die. She aint won le Tour 7 times in a row, so quite frankly, who the fuck cares...??? It all became apparent though, during chemotherapy she used medication from Amgen, who happend to sponsor the tou of California...

Some interesting turns of phrase coming up, as usual with americans. At the end of the race the sprinters will be going for the sprint "bonifications". Nice, the last loop will also be going under a tunnel, presumably in another tunnel. I'd rather listen le Tour's commentator talk in french. And I don't speak a word of french.

Doctor Mairi-Clare says that exercise doesn't make my heart stop working, so I should just keep on going like normal. And Sunday normally means looooong. I forgot where the secret ride leaves from, so I had to go ffor the normal ride for normal people. Considereing we are the biggest club in Scotland, it was a pretty good day and the racing season is about to start, only getting 2 of us along on the Sunday run is pretty piss poor. We started at the Tusitala Pavillion, by Flotterstone it was pretty obvious that riding together was going to be as productive as a Chenobyl resident's nut-sack. The hill at the Flott split us up, and I went on my merry way.

Edinburgh - Biggar - Peebles - Galasheils - Dalkieth - Cockenzie - Edinburgh, works out as 105 miles, in 5:45. Nae bad. Had a headwind going down to Biggar so was a bit slow there, but after that I was crusing at 20-25mph for a few hours. Then at Galashiels there was a lovely 15mile climnb, it wasn't steep, only a few percent, but that's enough. And I did it all without my iPod, which is damn impressive.

I'm giving serious thought to doing the MTBO British Champs in the summer. I'll need to find a mountain bike, and learn to ride a mountain bike, but other than that it's a good'un.

An interesting day. Went out in the morning with Edinburgh RC. The 9:40 peleton was seriously grande this morning, nearly 100 strong. Sitting at the back it was a damn impressive sight. Some serious talent packing ti in today, a couple of Plowman-Craven boys joined a long for the ride. A few of of us who are racing the first Grad-Prix headed off to Gifford to get some lappage in. No ice, which was nice, which meant no stackage, which was nice.I did seem to always find myself behind captain wobbles, which was not nice. After a few laps we went and did a couple of hills up a hill. Half way up the hill was a farm, and on this farm was a fucking big dog with a serious attitdue problem. I was at the front and it cam right for me, tried to get the teeth in, but my calfs are made of steel so it had no chance. It chased me for a while jumping up, and then decided that Claire was a tastier treat. I gave the farmer the stare and he got the message. It was locked up when we came back down. We then did some team TT practice on the way back to Tranent. A couple of neds came past in a Nova and thought it would be classic craic to chuck stuff at us. An empty bottle went skidding across the road just infornt of the front man's wheel, the full bottle came straight for me. I didn't really have time to think or react, luckily it hit my rim/spokes and bounced off. If it had happened just before or after it would have gone under one of my wheels and I would have been seriously fucked as we were doing 25mph.

My heart decided to stop working again today, so I had to pop down to hospital to get some jump leads. Luckily for me they have doctors at the hospital and they mended me, but I'm going to have to go back in for tests next week, which is a total nightmace cos I aint done any revision. It also meant that I missed my flight to spain for the fieldtrip, which is a total shitter. Well atleast I don't have to go down to south Spain and enjoy the sun, that would have been rubbish.

So I made my 9 o'clock. Sober. Not even hungover. Which is a miracle, considering I only had 3 hours slepp and I was definitely drunk when I got up at 7:30. I found it easier to get up today than when I go to bed at a normal time. Wierd.I went to Tesco for breakfast, had some croissant and a fruit salad; how very continental of me.

Last night was a classic. I had what can only be desribed as "more than lots" to drink, but still wasn't amazingly drunk. Which I think is a good thing, becuase it mean't I didn't go home in a police car covered in blood like the last time I went out. Me and Oli thought it would be funny to bundle Gus to the ground in the meadows and pull his pants down. We were right, it was hilarious.

It's still nice and sunny (not now, becase it's night time, but earlier in the day) so I went for a recovery jog round the meadows. Felt pretty good. Still a lack of talent about. I guess being sunny doesn't count for much when it's still only a few degrees. Legs didn't really hurt for the first time ever, so that's a bonus.

After the thrills of Ore Mineralogy and Petrology, in which Dave was clearly flirtying with our 30 something year old German lecturer, I was forced to walk back home as my bus pass has expired. Despite this inconvenient exertion I was still able to go training. I met up with Tomski a bit late at the Commonwealth Pool and we headed out to Gifford to get a couple of laps of the race circuit in before the first Grand Prix. The road was a bit on the hill climb, so we were unable to write our names and draw the ever hilarious giant penis.

I'm now off for a romantic deal for 5 with my flatmates. Then it's time for the Cav Traffic Lights Valentines Party, which is genius. Single, wear Green, kind of single (basically not single, but a bit of a slag) wear yellow. If you're taken wear red, or better yet, just don't go. I managed to get onto the guest list and VIP tickets. Aparently there's gonna be free champagne. Amazing.

Chances of making my 9 o'clock tomorrow are pretty low.

BBC weather came good again, and it's a nice sunny day. Definitely short shorts weather, however in the interest of public decency the naughty shorts are staying in the cupboard until: a) my legs aint whiter (that's white-er, for anyone who has issues reading that like me) than a vampire, and b) I can run faster than a granny.

Being the middle of the day and Meadows being in the middle of ths student area I spend significant time making sure my hair looked good, but also looked like I hadn't spent significant time making it look good. It's a fine balance, which today I bloody nailed. Good job. However there was a lack of George Square traffic talent, probably because I went during the middle of lecture time and those art students are just so damn punctual. However 5* for the photography girl, congratualtions to you, whoever you are, you're hot.

I think this is run number 6 since September, pretty good going, well over the 1 a month average now. And for the first time I only had mild leg soreness afterwards. Not only has vast amounts of cycling turned me even vainer, but it has also caused my beautiful legs to develope into cycling legs and not running legs, and this generally manifests as agonising soreness after the lightest of jogs on grass as my running muscles try to catch up with my cycling muscles.

Cycling with the mighty Edinburgh Uni CC. Pretty big group today, and some talent in the peleton as well. However I'm uncertain as to wheter said talent is single and/or a lesbian. It's a bit forward to ask, and my facebook stalking is not providing any conclusive evidence. For the moment I'll stick to cycling at le derriere de peleton and admire the wonderful view.

Arses aside, the group was (as usual) full of a few punters who never call out potholes, don't know how to ride in a group, and go up hills slower than a granny going up a hill on a crap bike whilst she has the flu. The bonus of this is that I get to pretend I'm really good by burning off up the front. It didn't really work though coz Aiden just sat on my wheel and let me do the work, so I slowed down to make him pass, at which point Bobby came flying past from no where with his calfs of steel. Aiden managed to get on his wheel, but I was dropped like a hot turd. I managed to pull them back to within a few meters, at which point they started their sprint for the top of the hill and I was well and truly spent.

I went off on my own and cranked in a few extra miles along the coast, felt pretty good considering the beasting me and Aiden had been doing up the hills.

I like sticky buns.

It was sunny, I went cycling. However sunny does not mean warm in Scotland, so I still had to wrap up like an eskimo and tanline development is going to have to wait a little longer. Luckily the wind was only down at about 5pmh, so I could have a nice steady session with out a rediculous headwind to get back into Edinburgh which makes a perfectly flat road seem like an alpine pass. I found my happy gear and just spun out in that for most of the ride. My speedo was being a lame-o and stopped working. Probably because I was going so fast it just couldn't get a reading. In retrospect I think it's good not to take your speed on a recovery ride, that way you don't feel like a total punter.

Sainsbury's had sold out of their homebrand chopped tomatoes, so I was either going to have to by posh ones or value ones. Money is a bit tight, so posh ones was totally out the window, and who needs posh chopped tomatoes, I'm not the queen. Mind you, just look at the tin for the value ones, it has 2 colours, 95% white, and a lovely orange print which says Value Chopped Tomatoes. It does not look tastey. However fortune was with me and I managed to spy some normal ones with added herbs for the same price as the sold out normal ones, amazing. Not only do I have to choose between upper or lower class, I also get free herbs. For a breif moment I felt very special indeed. Yet again, they didn't have any courgette. What is with this shop. There is nothing super about this markey at all.

Today, il giro d'eeside. After cleaning vast amounts of mess left by the EUOC Bursary team I set off up the Dee valley to Balmoral for lunchen with the Queen. It turned out that although Balmoral seemed quite close on the map, in real life it was a bit further than 24cm. However it got to the point where I had set off, so I was going to go all the way, plus there was no way to cross the river except for turning around and going back down the road I had just come from, and I was never going to do that. The yokels would think I had gone the wrong way or something, and I wasn't about to lose face to yokels. The south Dee road is amazing, at the risk of sounding a bit like an M55, the views were amazing and it was good to be in the highlands. It only took 2 hours to get there, which wasn't that bad. So I headed back down the Valley, on the A road of death, which turned out to be quite quiet. This was meant to be downhill all the way, but it seems the civil engineers though it would be funny to make the road go up the valley sides for absolutely no reason what so ever. Twats. I got a call from Coombsy saying they were in the park in Aberdeen doing their sprint race. I on the other hand was miles away. So head down and in the drops I tapped out a nice pace and the mile just rolled past. I reached a low point around Balleter, the mixed grill from the night before had just run out. Fortunately dessert was about to kick in and I got an awesome 2nd wind by Banchory. Things worked out pretty well, I got to the outskirts of Aberdeen just before Chepls and Coombs. 80 miles in the bank, good job. I then didn't get changed because Becky stole my bag. I then did have a massive fish and chip and battered sausage and smoked sausage and hughe bottle of coke to try and replace some of the calories used up today. A good weekend.

Cycling 4:10:00 [4]70.0 mi (3:34 / mi)
EUOC bursary training weekend up in Deeside, staying at Castle Coombs. running is for jokers, so I took up the Bianchi to put the miles in. Today: Col du Cairn O' Mount. Not much of a warm up, the hill really gets going as you go through Glen Dye. It's about 405m of vertical ascent, but there are a few ups and downs along the way to get more climbing in. By the top I was in the granny ring, barely moving and wanted to cry, but I got to the top. From there there is only one way to go. go up to 75kph on the way down, which is good for a bendy road. Then I just cruised about on the back roads of the Dee valley and surrounding area. Had a nice tail wind for a lot of it, which turned into a nasty tail wind for a lot of it.

We watched the rugby. Not sure why. Looks like France have it sewn up.

Dinner in the poshest pub ever. Mixed grill with extra chips. A meal of champions (me and coombs ever). Hollie has salmon, because she is the poshest person in Glasgow. I didn't think they had posh people in Glasgow, but they do. Don't be fooled by the weegie accent.
