Walk (hiking) 1:30:00 [2] * 4.0 mi (22:30 / mi)

Hike with the kids at FCE. Tried to hit some hills to get ready for next week. Ankle a bit sore in the boot.

Orienteering race 1:05:00 [4] **** 5.1 km (12:45 / km) +295m 9:53 / km
shoes: Montrail Highlander

Mass start at the DVOA summer picnic. I was doing fine until I read the map wrong and went to the wrong control (again)--after that, poor attempt to recover--thrashing about, not orienting the map, etc. Definitely going to have to work on map reading on the run. Eyes are so bad its going to take some adaptation.

Walk (hiking) 1:30:00 [2] 4.0 mi (22:30 / mi)

Hiking with the kids at FC West, prepping for White Mtn trip next week.

Road Running (recovery) 35:00 [3] 3.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Adidas Supernova

around the block, recovering from drive to Buffalo and back.

Orienteering race 2:20:00 [5] ***** 7.9 km (17:43 / km) +250m 15:18 / km
shoes: Montrail Highlander

Local at Hibernia. *Really* green, even for Hibernia--must be all the rain we've been having. I didn't think I could be doing much worse than anyone else fighting through the jungle, but a small number of controls really killed me. Hung low in the weeds, they were hard to see unless standing on them.

Road Running (pace) 50:25 [3] 6.0 mi (8:24 / mi)
shoes: Adidas Supernova

Lewis Mills loop, with short pace runs--mostly up hills and/or between shady spots. Hot out there.

Road Running (endurance) 1:15:00 [4] 8.2 mi (9:09 / mi)
shoes: Adidas Supernova

Lippitt Bollinger loop. Power was out all AM so I waited to see if there would be water for a shower when I was done. By then, the sun and temp was getting up there, though the humidity was OK. Usual 15/1 approach and I still felt beat by the end. Could be 1)heat, 2)not recovered from death march on Sunday, or 3)deer tick bites from Sunday that weren't found till Monday. Good thing already on antibiotics for tooth abscess...

Road Running (recovery) 35:00 [3] 3.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Adidas Supernova

Around the block--middle of the heat wave and my ankle is still sore from spraining it on Sunday.

Orienteering race 1:40:00 [5] *** 8.0 km (12:30 / km)
shoes: Montrail Highlander

VF Fatlands--a disaster in multiple dimensions...
- went late (to stay late to pick up epunch equipment) on a day where the temp was rising all day to about 97F and similar humidity. Almost quit a few times out of fear of not making it back.
- went out after trying to help at epunch registration with new epunch rental system. mind was already wasted before I started.
- complicated course with lots of criss-crossing, shared controls, and poor map printing led to overall confusion as to where I was supposed to be going (aided by extreme heat and sweat in the eyes).

Lessons: don't even try if not in a frame of mind to concentrate. shorter courses in extreme heat...

Road Running 48:00 [3] 6.0 mi (8:00 / mi)
shoes: Adidas Supernova

Lewis Mills loop. Had foot 'adjusted' and ultrasound at Dr. Bosler. Surprisingly seems to have made things significantly better. Maybe back for a followup next week.

Note

Missed a couple days this week because of relapse of the vertigo problem. Sick/dizzy for a couple days.

Road Running (recovery) 52:00 [3] 6.0 mi (8:40 / mi)
shoes: Adidas Supernova

Still trying to work the pain out of my foot. It seemed like I need to do some slower runs that put more of the effort on foot and ankles.

Golf 2:00:00 [2] 2.0 mi (1:00:00 / mi)

Sunday Jun 1, 2008 #

Orienteering race (sprint) 14:18 [4] ** 2.6 mi (5:30 / mi) +25m 5:20 / mi
shoes: Montrail Highlander

Spent most of the time working the epunch table. Ran one of two sprint courses. Definitely need more warm-up on sprints--felt pretty bad after a couple controls. But the time was pretty good relatively speaking.
