Road Running 43:00 [2] 3.5 mi (12:17 / mi)
shoes: Adidas Supernova

Around the block--talked son Sam into going with me. He made it the first mile or so then we had to stop and walk a few times. It was good enough to break a sweat and do some good stretching when I got back. Not feeling any ill effects of the marathon by now--which seems to be lucky compared to some other people. Last day of 'vacation'--time to get serious for 2008.

Road Running 35:00 [3] 4.0 mi (8:45 / mi)
shoes: Adidas Supernova

Hills on lewis mills and new rds. Just and maintenance run to get me through the holidays.

Road Running 55:00 [3] 6.0 mi (9:10 / mi)
shoes: Adidas Supernova

Bollinger--trying to get all the muscles back in some balance after the marathon. Knees, hips, ankles all feel out of 'alignment' but not real pain.

Note
(sick)

I had planned to take it easy this week, but on top of that caught a cold. Pretty miserable and not sleeping well. I've heard that many people get sick in the week after a marathon because their immune system is weakened. Since I rarely get sick, this theory might have merit...

Road Running 30:00 [3] 3.5 mi (8:34 / mi)
shoes: Adidas Supernova

Easy run around the block. Just some R&R after the marathon weekend. Hips and ITB are really tight--need to keep an eye on those or I'll be back to where I was last year.

Note

Nearly end-of-year thoughts and resolutions:
- every training should have a clear purpose--no more runs for the heck of it (although a get-away-from-the-computer run is OK, the goal being mental R&R). In fact, I think I'll start explicitly logging the goal with each entry.
- general 'conditioning' is generally not a valid goal. All the training for other purposes should contribute to conditioning indirectly.
- however, a periodic long run for 'endurance' is expected so by next year's marathon I'll be ready...
- more systematic navigation training, both in the field and armchair. Each should be logged to keep me on my toes

Note

Recovering pretty nicely from the marathon+. Doing lots of walking, no running yet. The next big job is setting some training and competition goals for next year. The most important lesson from this past year is that 'just going out for the usual run' has substantially diminishing returns. I need to focus on addressing weaknesses and moving forward, not just sustaining.

Orienteering race 6:10:00 [5] **** 27.0 mi (13:42 / mi)
shoes: Adidas Supernova

VF Marathon event - Definitely not well trained for the event, but felt pretty good considering. No 'injury' kind of pains--just lots of soreness. Nothing near as bad as last year at Philly.
Lesson learned: Need more STRENGTH work--heart rate seems never to be the limiting factor.

Road Running 35:00 [3] 3.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Highlander

Quick run around the block to keep loose for this weekend. Knees were a little sore afterward--Highlanders apparently not so good for long/hard venues.

Saturday Dec 8, 2007 #

Road Running 1:20:00 [3] 8.4 mi (9:31 / mi)
shoes: Vasque Velocity

Tried a bit longer run today to see how the foot held up. Didn't get worse with running, but was pretty sore afterwards. Trying Wyatt's advice for deep tissue massage--might be working.
All this sort-of rest, though, seems to be taking a toll on conditioning--not sure I'm up to a full marathon in 7 days.
