Orienteering race 1:11:31 [3] 8.5 mi (8:25 / mi)

Jukola leg 4 .291/156 71:31

A happy band of INT dads & lads rather than Brothers.
Freddie kicked off in solid fahion, then max made a couple of biggish mistake on the second night leg. Ringer Ewan McMillan had a stormer on the long night, and off I went.

It had been pissing with rain all day and night, and the first section of low-vis trees was very nasty and disorienting, then up a cliff onto a lovely flat plateau, with lots of flags and detail. Spent a while looking at 63, convincing myself it really wasn't 93 already, then ran on to the right spot.

After that the forest was generally nice, sometimes exceptionally nice, and somewhat easier than other Jukolas I've run.

Essentially clean after #1, maybe the odd 30 sec wobble, but not trying to push up the line when stuck in traffic, some 30% off the pace. Made up 108 places, lost a couple on the run-in and handed over to james. Basically, it went as well as I could have hoped.

james ran very well (66:35) on the other short leg, picking up another 100 places giving us a substantial lead over CLYDE and a shot at making the mass start, but it wasn't to be, Colin getting in 10 mins after the finish closed and 5 before the mass start. Paul ran a solid long day to get us done before noon.

It probably fair to say this was the worst Jukola I've been to, mainly on account of the weather. OTOH, "worst Jukola" is a bit like "poorest billionaire", it was still the best event of the year so far by a long way.

Note

Knackered after a sleazyjet fail.
Generally I like easyjet's "all in it together" attitude. Today, not so much.
Our 7:00 flight was delayed 25 mins, then went straight from "wait in lounge" to "closed" within 5-10 mins (non announcement. We legged it, and of course it wasn't closed. Or indeed even open, there being a big queue. Eventually we were stood down "technical problem". Then after an hour, they cancelled the flight, took us through immigration (bit weird for a UK flight) and into a holding pen. They apologised for the cancellation due to "staff over their hours", though in fact Gatwick was a mess because they closed the runway. Eventually they let us out without any info, so we joined the 200 strong stationary queue for customer services. Doind the math suggested the queue wouldn't clear by midnight, so rebooked on a flight from Luton and got the train across London, arriving at the Hampton at midnight. Flight out this morning, currently £400+ in the hole.
Reckon sorting ourselves out at less than £150 each shows the all in it together spirit, lets see if they get all weaselly about refunds.
