Orienteering race 21:28 [4] 2.5 mi (8:35 / mi)

COC Sprint at Calgary University. M35 1st

Late venue change to a campus sprint of the type favoured in the UK. Flat out all the way, but felt slow, and overshot by 30sec at #5 not seeing a curved wall right under the circle. Otherwise, sharp and aggressive on route choices and shaving seconds on corner cutting. Pleased with the run, and result as faster runners slipped up.

Orienteering race 19:12 [4] 2.0 mi (9:36 / mi)

Family Sprint relay, team "Interlopers One Short" jane james, me, james. We're a small family...

Jane ran really well on leg 1, and james lashed round the yellow course leg 2 tailing Graeme Rennie. A group set off just ahead of me, dithered at the start kite and I almost had them. Then they all ran away from me on the long leg. Young people are so rude these days: I ran teh rest of the ungaffled course alone. One error on the long leg taking a unintentional wrong turn and by the time I realised I was on a suboptimal route choice, still run flat out so maybe 20 sec. james lashed round leg 4 with Jeff Teutsch, bringing us home 5th overall and a somewhat dodgy handicap win.

Orienteering race 1:21:14 [3] 7.8 mi (10:25 / mi)

COC long M35. First start.
The original venue was cancelled due to marauding bears, and the organisers did a great job pulling the event together at short notice back at Rafter Six.

What I didn't notice was they changed the map scale on M35, from 1:10 to 1:15, at least until the maps were in the same box as W21. With 30sec to go, the nice organisers invited me to change course...

So it was all a bit weird, stop-starty, ultrasimplification to use the features, lots of slow walking and ultimately clean, less than a minute down on james. Most of the course in a completely empty forest, except for loads of deer (no bears) it felt more like a planning test run than a race.

Thought I'd won, since M35s were off first, right up to the prizegiving when Hiroyuki Kato won off an 11:55 start
