| A quick couple of sets each of squats, lunges, ham curls on the ball (ouch), curls, and shoulder exercises before Phatty and I did the "Hard-core" workout. | ||

| Phatty's first attempt at the "hard-core" workout that Bash and Bent gave us for a housewarming gift almost a year ago - yikes! We gave it our best shot and laughed when Phatty jumped at the chance to answer the phone and pause the DVD! It was just zoolander wanting to talk about paintball though so we were back at it before long. | ||

| Slice and I decided we would run the THOMASS race together and it turned out pretty well for us. We both pushed each other and managed to beat the boys in for a tie for 6th place. Lots of trail running in this one but once again a gorgeous day to be outside. | ||

| The first hour with our superfit friends had my heart pounding out of my chest. Dr.Bill, BobtheNavigator, Bash, Bent, Phatty, and I hit the skate trails and got some tips from Dr.Bill and made the most of it. Tough going since this was my first real try at skate skiing! | ||

| Tiny and STORM came to our place and we started our training day off with a trail run up the HVT. Was really missing my adidas Supernova trails today. Nice day to be out though!! | ||

| After out trail run we jumped into the bush and took turns orienteering to different points by using our map from the spring Giants Rib Raid that was held in the this area. We even ran into a small shelter that was built in the middle of the conservation area but it didn't look like anyone was going to be brave enough to take a look so on we went. | ||

| Bent kindly came to pick me up (my lovely '95 wagon doesn't like the cold) so that I could join him and Bash on the trails behind their house. A lovely day and once suited up with Bash's equipment we were off with Bulletdog (who likes to crouch and pounce on rookie skiiers like myself - makes for some interesting descents) and Thunderdog. My first wipe-out of the day was about 20 metres from the house. Good to get that under my belt since there were a few more to come. It's so nice to be able to ski right from the house -lucky folks - and nice of them to ask me to join them. The adductors are a bit sore now and reminding me of the time Geoff O. took me out in Gatineau Park for my first ski ever and made me ski 20 kilometres so that I couldn't walk to the next day! Not as bad but I guess I don't use those muscles as often as I should (that doesn't sound good does it?) | ||

| Legs were sore from yesterday so I didn't push it. Opted out of some postures - definitely no attempt at bow pose today! I know I needed it though as I could feel the postures getting easier as my stiff muscles loosened up. | ||

| Reluctantly got on the trainer to try to work out some more leg stiffness. Halfway through my mom called to tell me a good family friend of ours had finally lost his battle with esophageal cancer after six years. It is always a shock even when you know it is coming. Took the wind out of my sails on the ride but I continued just thinking about all of the fun we have had with him over the years..... | ||

| Okay I am back at it. A mix of everything with weights and the ball. I am going to stick to regular squats until I get a little stronger before I go to the squat-to-press that requires a little bit more co-ordination. I just felt a little wobbly and don't want to hurt myself and feel stupid! | ||

| Hit the road between patients and felt good for the first 5 minutes. Then it felt like I was running on someone elses legs - and not a strong someone else! Probably had something to do with the strength workout and the snow running on the weekend (that should have been skiing!). Nice with the snow falling though. | ||

| Event: Salomon Adventure Challenge | ||

| Well once again we struggled through the winter adventure race! The option for different routes was great off the start and we thought we would gamble since we knew we needed a good position going into the ski section. Instead of doing the riding bike drop thing we decided to drop our bikes at one spot and do the entire orienteering section on foot. Thankfully STORM is a gazelle and hooked me up right away. Only one minor miss on one checkpoint but when we got back to the bikes there were a tonne of other teams there. Not only that we had to search for our bikes since they had been moved from where we left them.
Onto the skis we saw the usual suspects - Treehuggers, LSN, and a bunch of other teams - let the suffering begin. Last year we had classic skis and paid the price, this year we had skate skis and again paid the price. Next year if I can't get both sets of equipment I think I will volunteer. It makes what would have been a great ski section just a little frustrating. So we slogged away and in the end miraculously ended up in 5th. Neat to finish 1 minute behind Tiny and Co. since it was the reverse last year with us finishing just one minute ahead of them. They also helped us out there by letting us know we were heading toward a road that was out of bounds - thanks for that - saved us more walking with our skis! Fun day that would have been more fun if we had classic skis but hey that's AR! Of course I loved racing with my teammates Phatty and STORM - have to do more speed training if I am going to prevent that tow rope from snapping when I am hooked up to STORM! | ||

| Out with Phatty for a run before I made a yummy fish dinner from a recipe that a patient gave me - and I didn't mess it up which is a miracle. No time to weight train today because we watched a movie - how is that for an excuse....I've missed Monday and Wednesday this week and it's only the second week yikes I am a slacker - have to do it today since I don't want to do too much the day before the winter race and it looks like there is going to be skiing so that should tire me out pretty quickly! | ||

| Phatty and I headed out to CC Conservation area for a slow run and boy could I still feel it in my legs from the Treehugger race the day before. That's good I guess but was I ever hurting. The greasy breaky I had with Hansel, Slice, Phatty, and Langford didn't digest for about 4 hours either so my stomach was a little sore. | ||

| So I had to try to better my second place finish at last year's Treehuggers Annual and my competition was going to be tough with Slice there. The course set by Bash was great and I think spending a lot of time planning my route paid off. I found most of the controls with no problems, got wet feet (but not until the end), missed the burrs, and was huffing and puffing pretty good. So I managed to take the female title (yippee) and despite being passed by B.Miller and Denise right at the end it turns out they don't know what a Shrike is. I'll have to thank The Bakes for increasing my birding knowledge over the past year! What a great day - thanks to Bash and Bent for another great event! | ||

| I took Tiny's advice to do more intervals on the bike to fight the boredom and it worked. 15 minute warm-up, 30 second intervals, 30 second recoveryx10, 10 minute recovery (even though he said 5) and then did it again with a 15 minute cool down. Felt pretty good and the time does go by waaaayyy faster. | ||

| Put a bit more weight on while doing the squat-to-press (basically a squat with dumbbells at your shoulders and you explode up and press the dumbbells overhead as you come up) - good full body exercise. You really have to make sure the core is tight coming up so the back doesn't extend too much. I took too much time between sets because I had the TV on and was watching an old favorite (Party of FIve) - reminded me of highschool. | ||

| Ran the HVT. Windy and chilly but still slippery in the areas that get some sun. Had to wear an old pair of shoes since I left two pairs in the trunk of Phatty's car and it's at the airport. Sore feet when I finished - that will teach me to empty the car after a weekend away which is one of my least favorite jobs - aside from washing lettuce! | ||

| Well I managed to get through one workout and felt pretty good. I am really concentrating on technique since a lot of the exercises involve balance and coordination. Once I get that down I will start to increase the weights. | ||

| My first THOMASS race. Had a blast on a phenomenal course set by Bob Miller. Of course I messed up one control and it cost me about 10 minutes but it could have been worse. I was proud of myself for not throwing my map down and stomping out of the forest in a northeasterly direction toward the finish line. Instead I pulled out the legend to find out what all of the different colours and symbols meant (rookie).
My worst nightmare came true when I had Hansel running up behind me right near the finish line. It didn't last long though as he blew by me and one other competitor on the way to the finish. Poor Phatty had a rough day in there and I have a feeling it has something to do with how much he loves to run fast in the woods ( I think he is faster in there than on the road)...so much so that he ran right past the controls. | ||

| Storm came up to join Bash, Bent, Phatty, Bulletdog and I for a 25km trek along the Bruce Trail...I forgot how sore your legs can get while walking at a fast pace. Nice to sit by the fire and eat yummy Christmas cookies at Bash and Bent's house afterward. | ||

| Tested out parts of the strength training program that I have put together for Phatty and I. Excited about reaching a point when my legs don't feel like they are going to buckle with every step the day after a workout.
I have made sure that the exercises all have a stabilizing component and do not isolate specific muscles but incorporate full body movement in order to develop healthy but strong movement patterns. No more pec deck, Smith machines, or universal machines. | ||

| What a day - FOR MAY!!! Went for a run on the HVT at lunch - it was gorgeous but so sad. Having just watched "An Inconvenient Truth" on the break I can't help but get depressed about days like today in January. On top of that I felt sluggish. May have had something to do with the monster sandwich I had a half hour before going. Also didn't have my trail runners that I LOVE (forgot them on Orillia) so slipped around on the muddy trails on road shoes that got so heavy from collecting mud...I also overdressed..should have been a better run. | ||
