Trekking 1:00:00 [1]

Walked on the HVT while Phatty went for a run. Definitely would have been hard to run today, just feeling a little uncomfortable. Nice day out and came home to have a nap by the fire!

Note

Well Phatty and I have just been given a critical piece of baby gear. The super generous folks at Salomon had a little "shower" for us today and our gift was the Chariot Cougar with the jogging and bike adaptors - SWEEEEET! no excuses now!

Trekking 45:00 [1]

Booked it around town midday. Nice to be outside and I can't wait for the snow to arrive!

Yoga 1:00:00 [1]

Much needed yin session with Coach LD at our place. Slightly distracting listening to Phatty debrief Spain with getawaystix in the background but I know he has been wanting to have that conversation for a while. More yoga needed in the next 4 weeks!

Orienteering 2:15:38 [4]

What a great day out at the Half Raid the Hammer with Coach LD and Gosling! I was unsure about how I would feel since I was a bit uncomfortable on Saturday just walking around but as luck would have it the bambino cooperated and I felt just fine. As I gave some tips to some newbies once we got our maps Coach LD and Gosling picked our routes on the map. We had a couple of options in some places just in case the forest was nasty to get through or if I was feeling less than spry.

Off the start line we had an uphill run before heading off road and on some trails to CP1. We were about half way back or more on this little jaunt but once we got to CP1 we punched and ran out on the way to CP2 while a lot of teams changed clothes, went down the wrong trail or re-oriented themselves. This got us to the crevasse ahead of the pack and I didn't have to worry about losing a lot of time to teams if I got wedged there. Luckily Hammer and Tarno were there to help me up and no wedging took place!

On top of the escarpment we had a decent trail run taking us southwest where we could attack CP3. No-one passed us on this trail but as soon as we punched 3 there were several teams flying through the woods around us. Oh well only one speed here but we were jogging the whole time so as long as we were accurate I knew we could catch some of these teams. On to CP4 and then 5 (which I would have gone by if I didn't spot it through the open forest because I was going to use a large open area to locate us and never saw it) and then on to CP6 (also CP2) before heading north to CP7 on our way to Kerns Park. We took a bit more of a conservative route to 7 which was probably unnecessary but we arrived just behind teams who had passed us on the trail so not too much time lost.

Across Kerns Road and into the aid station I knew this section would be more technical and having orienteered here before I thought the forest would be open enough that it would be to our advantage to take more direct routes given that we couldn't keep up with some of the teams on the trail. We hit CP9 and 10 really cleanly and then back to the aid station for CP11 before heading out to CP12. We also took a less direct route here and went up top so as to avoid ups and downs for me and came down a spur to CP12. We missed the spur I was aiming for but in the end I think it was a blessing. We ran down the next one and could see the control through the forest while some of the faster teams were emerging so I think we were starting to make up time.

Hard to say how our route choices compared for the next controls time wise but we were accurate on on our last trip back to the parking lot before heading to the finish I thought maybe we could be in the top 10. We punched here and had to run the road back to the finish. Bummer since I knew if we had teams give chase there was little I was going to be able to do about it. We had been running all day but one thing I can't really do is sprint. Okay I can't really do that at the best of times but if someone is going to try to pass on the final stretch I can usually find an extra gear. Not today. Two teams passed on the road on the way back and despite trying to pick up the pace I think they had extra motivation to not be beaten by a pregnant woman so they were flying. Coach LD, Gosling and I came in 45 seconds back of second place for 4th and I was surprised that we were that close to the podium. Still not happy about being passed in the last 200 metres but we had a great day and Coach LD and Gosling picked great routes for us. Gosling decided to leave her map in her bag which I only discovered once we started the race but she was a great pace setter and control puncher and Coach LD followed along on the map and helped make on the fly route changes so we worked well as a team. I even got a push up the hill by Coach LD when she could see that I was starting to lean far forward to get some momentum.

Great course and excellent use of the space that we were in and excellent teammates to race with.
Okay now I think that is the last race that I will do before this baby comes. I was pretty sore afterward so it's time to mellow out. Even Hammer was giving me the slow down signal on the course.
