orienteering race 1:41:01 [4] 13.75 km (7:21 / km) +508m 6:12 / km
shoes: icebugs

time includes some of the warm up as I put in a solid effort to get to the start on time!
During this run to the start it became clear that the ~2000m altitude was having an effect. so my strategy was to chill out and pace my currently flabby body. this also gave me time to enjoy what is easily the most scenic orienteering event i've ever done. Over the top of a famous alps pass on a clear day after snow fell overnight. awesome fell terrain with lots of challenges despite no trees as well. physically I struggled but walked away with a lot of experience. got caught and dropped by lots of elites, but I realised I could hang on to them easily because they weren't navigating as well as me, and needlessly wobbling through the terrain. only time loss in the first 90 minutes was 1 minute in which I followed one of these elites, and 20seconds where I had to have a piss... in the last 5 minutes I lost a lot of time as I totally hit the wall and stopped navigating. was in 27th up until that point which I woulda been happy with, but 35th will have to do.

finishes off a good week of training, after 3 attempts to restart training after woc, foiled by laziness/conference in London, achilles, and food poisoning in France.

got the train and then drove with 007 up to San Bernadino, part of Italian speaking Switzerland. thouhg the forecast was good, the weather was shocking, and it was a cold wet race (on the same map as JWOC relay 2005 ). After warming-up up the steep hill to the start (which I am told a certain Lazy-not-dave did some strength training on), started and immediately new that this was another day like the WOC middle in which I simply didn't have any mojo. but it was a fun downhill course which helped me get through a demoralising 3rd last. one mistake of about a minute, and also some time loss late in the course getting confused. also lost half a minute "doing a Tim" and nearly popping my shoulder out trying to jump a fence too casually.
got back with freezing hands and a cold face (where the beard doesn't insulate). italian pizza warmed the soul.
