gym 30:00 [3]

Spinning class with Nina was full - I should have booked. But it was sort of ok because I couldn't stay for the whole class anyway. I went across to the other gym and did 25 minutes of my own made up spinning class. Then some planks and push ups and called it a day.

mtb 3:30:00 [3]

Rohan, Erica and I rode to Tusua Trench, I think its about 45k with a very big hill at the start. Luckly, Jo kindly agreed to pick us up and drive us home otherwise it would have been a long day. She even bought us an esky full of sandwiches and cold drinks.

Ro and I rode from our place in Lotopa, up cross island road to Erica's (1 hour) where we waited for the others to show up and when they were still not ready an hour later we left without them think they would catch us but they didn't. It poured for at least the first 2 hours. The road turns into a bit of river in some places when that happens but the dogs are scared of the rain so I was glad it was raining. Plus rain keeps the temp down. Tusua is great place to swim and it was sunny on the other side of the Island so I hope to go back there quite a few times!

running 35:00 [4]
shoes: Blue DS trainer

Running training with no warm up again, that can't be good for my legs. Apia park track was flooded so we met on the sea wall. My taxi was 15 minutes late and then didn't know where the place on the sea wall that I wanted to go was so I arrived over half an hour late. But partly because this is Samoa and partly because the venue changed, I made it in time for the run throughs at the end of warm up and the intervals but I also had to go early to make it to work on time. I did 2 x 3 minutes, 3 x 2 minutes, and 1 x 1 minute all with 1 minute recovery in between. Then 8 minutes warm down. Hectic way to start the day and I'm still not sure it was worth it but I don't run much here so it is good to get out and do something.

gym (Hi-Lo class) 45:00 [3]

Should have stayed at work.. didn't enjoy this at all, I thought it would be weights and stuff but we just bounced around for ages, I was too tired to bounce.

Paddling 25:00 [3]

Paddling today was a bit of an adventure - we flipped the boat. I think there are a number of reasons why we managed to get a usually very stable boat to go over. Too many people turned up so we had 7 in a 6 person boat and we were waiting for the other boat to come out to us so we were just chatting away. Jeff, the steerer, wasn't paying attention and the weather was shit, rainy and windy so a bit more choppy than usual. Anyway a big wave came, we weren't ready, and it pushed us over. It was high tide so we were in water well over our heads and it's not possible to turn the boat back over in water that deep without it filling with water and sinking, so we all swam/tugged the boat back to shore. Once we got going, I was passenger on the way out and then got to paddle on the way back.

gym (Zumba) 45:00 [3]

I have never seen a gym so packed in my life. Everyone really loves Zumba here and really gets into it, there are different steps for men and women and all the girls where their lava lava skirts. It was kind of like Zumba at home but with more groove and we did arm and tummy dances to work those muscles too.

gym (Hi-Low class) 45:00 [3]

Lunch time gym with Luana and Monica. Fun but I am obviously the worst in the class at the dancing warm up but Luana promises I will get into it. Maybe.... Pooring with rain again.

gym (spinning) 45:00 [3]

Netball got cancelled because the courts flooded and Soccer was off because Samoan's don't like rain, which is weird because it rains a lot. I went to the gym, and it was hard to hear the instructor over the music and rain. I sweated so much I may as well have been outside in the rain. Good to do some Cardio.

running (Mt Vaea) 50:00 [3]
shoes: Blue DS trainer

Today I ran up and down the long track! I went with Paul, a yank, and he is keen so we ran for a bit longer than usual. 24.30 to the top from SPREP. It is absolutely pissing with rain and was very slippery on the way down.

gym 30:00 [3]

Luana and I went to the gym close to work for a class called 'low impact'. It was very similar to boxerise but with a few moves on the step. Great music but very hard work so lucky it only lasted half an hour. Heaps of high 5's at the end.

Netball 10:00 [3]

We won our first netball game because the other team didn't show up. By the time that was all worked out there was only 10minutes until the next game started so we played a quick friendly against the fa'fa's. They squeal like girls but play rough and dirty.

running 1:15:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Structure 14's

This was a bit of an epic. Chris and I left our compound at about 7 and planned to run for about half an hour. We bumped into to Duene and Flynn and they talked us into running with them down to the place where you buy electricity for your house. We ran the long way there and planned to just loop back to our place. About 10 minutes from home and about 40 minutes in we ran into a village that was observing Sa, evening prayers. We either had to sit down for half an hour and wait it out or go back the way we came. You're not allowed to move around the village during this time and important people from the Church with big sticks stand around making sure no-one does. We turned around and ran back the way we came. It was very dark by the time we got home and the dogs for the last 20 minutes were crazy and terrifying.

Note

Today I walked out to goldfish lake - its about a 2 hours walk return. It was great to swim in a fresh water lake. The water was very refreshing unlike the very salty sea water here.

running (Mt Vaea) 20:46 [3]
shoes: Nike Structure 14's

Soccer 30:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Structure 14's

Actually played a game today on a full size feild which felt very big. I didn't do much, girls are allowed to be offside so my job was just to stand right near the goal and fight the goalie for the ball whenever it came down our end. He was allowed to use his hands though so often just picked the ball up.

gym (boxercise) 1:00:00 [3]

Not a huge fan of boxercise but it's kind of all there is....

Soccer 30:00 [3]

My work team needed girls for their social match, so I went along but the other team didn't show up, I think that happens all the time, Posa was saying they have only played two games in this round....

We just played a short half field game amoungst ourselves. I ran back and forth and didn't really touch the ball.

Paddling 45:00 [3]

Super windy but luckly the storn didn't roll in until we were off the water. I took at short turn at the front yelling hup when we change sides and pacing today. Lots of flying fish too.

running (Mt Vaea) 35:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Structure 14's

On my own today so splashed out and actually ran to the place where the track starts rather than walking. Wet and slippery today and noone else out there - I thought it was peaceful but the reception lady was horrified that I had done it on my own. It's annoying needing a chaperone for everything.

Also missed the free bus home becuase it took way longer to get back down than I thought. Got a lift with some colleagues to the hospital, then taxi into town, then bumped into Chris, he lives in my compound, at the shops and his boss gave me and him a lift home.

gym (boxercise) 1:00:00 [3]

Lunchtime boxing class at work. Hurt my finger that doesn't bend pretty badly. Samoans punch hard, even when they are 60 year old ladies who say they wont hit hard because I am just new to boxercise.

running 35:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Structure 14's

Exercising was a bit of a shomozzele today. Both of my usual chaperones, Chris for running, Rohan for riding, were out drinking last night and neither would commit to coming with me in the morning but both got up and went, Rohan without me because I wasn't ready on time (I didn't know he was going), and Chris because I heckled. We warmed up for 15 minutes then I did 8 x 1minute hard one minute rest back and forth while Chris just kept jogging because he was quite hungover.

Then I went on a boat out to the reef and snorkled around for a while. Nice reef with lots of fish and coral and stuff. Didn't see anything really exciting, just the usual tropical fish.

Paddling 2:00:00 [3]

Kayaking day with the Australian girls. We did a tour around Nauma Island, heaps of turtles but quite choppy and I was very scard for the part when were in the big swell. Climbed up to a light house on one of the islands and could see all the way to American Samoa. We stayed the night on Nauma and caught the motorised boat back in time for church on Sunday (nothing else happens on Sunday).

running 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Structure 14's

Cam's running club. The group meets at 6.30am at Apia Park to run on the nice track built by the Chinese. No-one lives out my way so had to get a taxi but it is still really really dark at 6.20 so I spent alot of energy panicking about standing out on our road in the dark by myself. In the end I stayed behind the gate and only came out when I could see lights coming up the road. The driver helped me find the other runners but I was very late.

Cam has learnt well from Gary at Bilbies and we did a shortened versions of Gary's drills and run throughs and a whistle set. I did:
2 x 4 minutes with 2 minutes recovery. The first was supposed to be a bit of a warm still but I went pretty hard and did about 950m. Second 1k and then 2 x 3minutes just under 800m then 1 x 2minutes about 475m. Sweating like crazy even at that time in morning. Glad I did it and will try to go regularly.

running 30:00 [3]
shoes: Blue DS trainer

I have started work and have regular access to the internet so time to get back into AP. And I want to write down some times before I forget them... my goal is to be as fast up Mt Vaea when I go home as when I first ran it. Last thursday I did 20.41, today 20.58, so getting slower already. I ran it at lunchtime today though so hotter and drier, Steve did his faster time ever so was pretty excited.

Jogged the short way down.

gym (boxing class) 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Blue DS trainer

Boxing class at JP's gym - 6 tala is a bargain. I loved it but I am not coordinated enough to hold the pads properly for other people to punch so not sure I will go again. Though maybe I will because I can't get back into from work in time for the earlier circuit class.

Paddling 1:00:00 [3]

On Apia harbour with all of the other Australian volunteers and Josh, the coach. The harbour is very shallow so its quite hard work, but it was fun, we had six in the boat and saw awesome coral and fish.

mtb 2:00:00 [3]

Rode up the mountain behind our place with Rohan. It's got some great views and lots of banana's on the way but is very unrelenting, there are no flat bit or slight downhills to give you a bit of break. The gradient stays about the same the whole way. I had to walk a fair bit at the end and was relieved to see the tower and Rohan waiting at the top. Didnt take long to get down.

gym (circuit) 45:00 [3]

At JP's gym. No aircon.

Out along the sea wall and back from Agies with Nicole and Tracey. A bit freaky, lots of dogs and men saying hey baby. Definitely wont be doing this on my own.
