Orienteering race (WA Long Champs) 1:59:48 [4] 12.8 km (9:22 / km) +570m 7:39 / km
(sick)

Very long and possibly last run in the 6 year old Silva Prolites.

Thought after yesterday that I would be a bit healthier and get round OK. Very wrong. Struggled physically from very early despite starting conservatively. Had pretty much given up by the map change at 15, but the last third looked a bit easier and I didn't want to pull the pin on a state champs.

No massive mistakes near the controls, but a really bad route choice on 11, coupled with a bad route choice then a change of mind then a lose track of where I am totally on the way to number 8 and another period of total confusion on a longish leg near the end (only started to relocated when I spotted the out-of-bounds gravesite from a distance) cost the best part of 15 minutes. The rest was physical. Dunno how much closer I would have been had I been healthy but pretty disappointing really.

Good enough for 3rd - but 32 minutes behind Craig says it all.

Took enough out of me that the fever I had last week returned. Knee also sore (medial side of patella) for the last 90 minutes. (and still sore through Monday - some improvedment Tuesday)

Orienteering race (State Middle Distance Cha) 32:48 [4] 4.7 km (6:59 / km) +150m 6:01 / km
(sick)

Pretty good really. Not feeling flash after being sick all week, so ran really conservatively. One mistake at 5 costing about 1:15. Other than that just small misses and hesitations in the circle. Honestly thought it would be good enough for second and got a rude shock when Tooms came tearing past me with about 5 controls to go.

Really struggle to read the detail while moving (probably to be expected after about half a dozen runs in the last 2 years and not many for the 3 years before that)

Weird to hit a session with Tooms that I've never done before.

Have started to get a cold. felt crap on warm-up, but not too bad once going. Legs felt a bit weak on the hills, but don't have any times to compare it to and given how stuffed I was on the last 2, but just holding times, I'd say the intensity was about right, even if the pace wasn't great.

Note

First run in the free TEVAs. Seemed pretty comfortable. Very light. Not overly cushioned for a hard limestone trail with some steep downhill, but worth trying out with the ankle braces for at least a backup pair to the ever scungier looking Adidas trail shoes I've been using for a few years...

run warm up/down 25:00 [1] 4.0 km (6:15 / km)
shoes: TEVA X-1 Control
