Backcountry skiing (Hi5) 3:00:00 [2] 12.0 km (15:00 / km) +1150m 10:08 / km

Gorge with Courtney, Atsuko, Stuart and Pete (Stuart's british friend). Pretty relaxed pace as Paul had some skin issues. Very nice snow and not a lot of tracks. Could feel the old tracks in some spots but for the most part they were covered. A couple runs in happy valley and then back to the truck via to south slopes on the 17k summit. A bit cold in Happy Valley but comfortable in the sun. New skis seemed easy to ski.

Classic ski 1:00:00 [2] 11.0 km (5:27 / km) +200m 5:00 / km

Night ski at Macpherson with Courtney. Cold but bright night with a fairly full moon. Good thing as my light was pretty weak due to low battery - could barely see. Despite the cold nice to get out. Another day using green wax...

Classic ski 1:45:00 [3] 20.0 km (5:15 / km) +400m 4:46 / km

Colder this morning (-23). Didn't help that we went an hour earlier than the other day but had to check out so start time was forced upon us. Only Courtney and I - she was unfortunately skating due to binding issues. I wore an extra layer (hoodie) today and was happy I did except for a couple hills and some double poling sessions where I overheated a little. Skied the Raven loop that we hadn't done yet - nice rolling trail though a stiff climb back at the end as it is deceptively downhill for a while. Beautiful and wintery out there... as usual nice to get nordic km somewhere out of town. 3km at the end with the dog. Garmin still dead.

Classic ski 1:30:00 [2] 17.0 km (5:18 / km) +300m 4:52 / km

A little warmer today (-14) and faster too due to a grooming. I was on classic and green wax worked well. Overall in slow/cold conditions I think classic is the way to go as easy to grip wax and the classic track speeds up faster with skier traffic. The whole gang went out today - had a few stops for technique practice. Tough thing about Dawn Mountain is that the trailhead is pretty much at the top of the whole trail system so you are always climbing back to the cabin. We used HawkOwl this time and it was more pleasant than the choice yesterday. A few solo km with the dog and a few extra km at the end just with Courtney. Garmin crashed and remained dead after rebooting so estimating distance.

Telemark skiing 30:00 [3]

Afternoon at Kicking Horse. Several laps on the Stairway to Heaven chair. Turned out our plan was fortuitous as the gondola broke and was shut down for over an hour while we pretty much had a private hill by staying in the alpine. Lots of leg burn from the tele turns. Had a couple good steep mogul runs that suggested that I do in fact remember how to tele ski. Despite being in the sun most of the time it got a bit cold and the last top to bottom run was a little miserable.

Skate ski 1:40:00 [3] 19.0 km (5:16 / km) +400m 4:46 / km

Meds04 reunion at Kicking Horse so a chance to ski the Dawn Mountain trails (just me and Courtney as the rest of the gang was a the ski hill). Pretty cold (-18) and a skiff of snow on top of the grooming made it a slow ski. Offset on the flats (instead of 1-skate) and moderate hills seemed like hard hills. Wore long johns, boot covers, a buff and over mitts. Face got cold at times but otherwise OK for temp.
