Backcountry skiing (Tonic) 7:00:00 intensity: (1:00:00 @1) + (3:00:00 @2) + (3:00:00 @3) 24.0 km (17:30 / km) +3050m 10:42 / km

Mike and I finally hit the 3000m mark for a day of ski touring. We've had a number of 2500-2700 days but never more. I had mentioned a few times that it would be cool to pull it off this season. I thought the weather might allow for a big Rogers Pass epic but Sunday was shaping up to be the best day. Of course I needed a partner to make it happen and most people seemed to be happy to have hung up their skis and moved on to summer activities. It isn't really spring yet in the valley though...

No worries Mike is always up for skiing:) Only issue was that Saturday worked better for him. Still had the pass as a tentative plan but when I woke up and saw the pretty cloudy conditions made an audible and went to Begbie. Didn't have an actual plan of skiing 3000m today but just worked out that the skiing was good and we kept going with that number in the back of our minds.

We lucked out with several cm of fresh snow all the way below the sleds and it some spots it felt like 15-20cm with wind transport. High up it skied really well while lower down the supportive crust underneath was a little funky but fine once you figured it out. First run was not as good as it could have been due to debris in the gulley which was rather hard. Next three runs were really good though. Checked out a couple alternative entrances to that zone that I had been eyeing up. The middle one is fine, the left one is much more committing with a small steep roll at the entrance. Luckily I ski cut the roll on approach and popped the small wind slab.

The weather was variable all day and though I had the Begbie Col in my mind as an option we never got the window to head up there. Felt pretty tired on the second climb especially (of course we had to break about 1600m of trail which played a role) but felt better once we started re-using our uptrack. Was glad Mike had water to spare as I would have been out too early. Forgot to pre-hydrate before leaving the house. The last climb I certainly felt like my pace slowed considerably - we were never hammering though.

Bike (Road) 1:25:00 [3] 41.0 km (28.9 kph) +350m

First ride of the season (not counting short rides to work). Thought I might get rained on but weather was OK and the sun came out for the last climb. 28mm tires on the road bike felt pretty cushy. Ride out felt hard but had a headwind so hard to judge.

Run 1:05:00 [2] 11.0 km (5:55 / km) +150m 5:32 / km
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

A bit on the greenbelt with the dog. He was happy to stop after 4km and then I went to check out the CPR trails. 90% snow free - mainly just patches left on the flatter benches. Knee felt OK which was a positive.

Skate ski 55:00 [3] 11.5 km (4:47 / km) +350m 4:09 / km

Maybe the final skate ski of the season for me. Last grooming was a week or so ago but still lots of snow (only a few bare patches in the usual spots). Would have been better a few hours earlier as getting soft and slow in the open. Shaded trails that had seen less traffic were pretty nice. Felt tired - not sure if it was the slow snow or the onset of manbola.

Run 43:00 [2] 7.5 km (5:44 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Finally some trails to run on as the greenbelt single track is melting out - only the occasional snow patch. Unfortunately the knee which felt fine skiing was sore running. Maybe it is a sign...
