We had plans to go to McMurdo a month ago but the warm conditions made us reschedule. In retrospect probably would be been OK going in March. Original trip was 4 nights but I couldn't find anyone else who was interested in going early so just two nights with Christian and Lucas. The grooming to Silent Pass had stopped so the sled access was a bit of an unknown. We drove to 30km and had 2-3km where there was only consistent snow on the side of the trail then things got better. Only a couple spots where open patches were developing and road was still quite smooth until the last km. Almost 30km of sledding so a long way in. Crossed a few climax paths but none had run to the road and none of them felt super exposed even if hazard was higher.
The weather was pretty cloudy today with a little snow. We headed towards the pass to International Basin and then explored in various directions. At times light was pretty flat but for the most part nothing too difficult in terms of skiing. Snow was quite acceptable - better than I expected.
Cabin is rustic but comfortable. We were entertained by the local pine marten.
