Bike 1:00:00 [1] 10.0 km (10.0 kph) +36m

Fat bike with Courtney. Pretty windy and cold on the way back. Have a cold and cancelled my afternoon clinic. The recommendation to avoid work if you are sick is challenging when you are a health care provider...

Run 1:15:00 [1] 12.5 km (6:00 / km) +50m 5:53 / km
shoes: Columbia Outdry

Easy pace - should have worn spikes as more icy than I expected. Longer run than planned as stopped to talk with Eiri and then Milo was misbehaving a few times - twice decided that he would rather stay and play with dogs he met vs continuing on with me. Had to go back and corral him but once he knows he has not listended then he is even less likely to listen.

Bike 2:15:00 intensity: (1:00:00 @1) + (1:15:00 @2) 52.0 km (23.1 kph) +600m

Thought about going for a run today but my dad wanted to ride into work with me so another day of biking it was... another day to rest my calf is probably isn't a bad idea either. Feeling better and probably back to normal tomorrow. Easy spin into town on Lochside and then a bit more steady pace on the ride along the coast and back home. Threw in a climb up Mt Doug as I had never ridden up there. Wow it is a steep climb. About a km above 12% with some sections pushing 20%. Weather was drab today but didn't start spitting until I was almost done (though that was also the only time the sun came out). Legs felt OK - bum was a little sore but not terrible.

Bike 3:15:00 [2] 86.0 km (26.5 kph) +920m

Very nice day with blue skies and slightly warmer than yesterday (though still a few degree below seasonal). Rode most of the 70.3 course skipping the section on Old West Saanich and Royal Oak. Some punchy climbs heading around Mt Doug and then flatter or rolling through Sidney. I'd never made it to the end of the peninsula and really liked the area around Land's End. Another very steep (12%) but short climb near Patricia Bay. Felt really good for the first hour, OK the second hour then energy started lagging. I guess I do need to train to be able to ride 90km at steady pace;) The last third of the ride was quite hilly and felt like I had a headwind in every direction too. There are a couple 70m hills before Brentwood Bay (5-6%), about 100m up Willis Point with some 9% sections, a few short steep climbs on West Saanich and a final climb up Brookleigh. Will be a tough finish to the ride but overall a great loop for the race with sea views, lots of bucolic rural sections, some urban sections. A huge cross section of socio-economic status - from huge oceanfront mansions to ramshackle reserves. So nice that it is one big loop.

Bike 2:05:00 [2] 48.5 km (23.3 kph) +615m

Extended the trip by a handful of days with a visit to my parents in Victoria. Thought that a break from the snow might be nice and also a good opportunity to kick start the bike season. Good thing my dad has stockpiled all my old bikes as I was able to fly with just carry on.

I rode with my dad today - he was on the Devinci (road) and I was on the Vertex (hardtail MTB) which worked out pretty well in terms of balancing speed. A mix of sun and cloud with temperatures around 8 degrees. Comfortable in two layers. Seemed like the roads had seen some cleaning already and lots of other riders out. Stopped at Patricia Bay and watched some planes land. A very pleasant ride and nice to feel like spring was in the air...
