Saturday Feb 18 #

10 AM

Skate ski 2:45:00 [2] 28.0 km (5:54 / km) +465m 5:26 / km

A longish ski with Courtney, Sean and Juliann at Silver Star. We seem to have poor timing this season at Silver Star as the conditions were not fast due to some fresh snow but a nice ski none the less.

Strength 30:00 [3]

Snow throwing.

Skate ski 1:20:00 [3] 14.25 km (5:37 / km) +290m 5:06 / km

Ridiculously slow conditions today with almost no glide - the snow was quite warm but it also felt that my "plus" skis were the wrong choice (perhaps the snow was a little colder than the air temp?). It would have been interesting to switch skis. There was a lot of offset today... I did 20 minutes of Z3 and it was taking me 5:30 to ski Evelyn's. Pushing harder did not increase speed in a linear fashion... kind of like paddling Tomcats.

Backcountry skiing (Roamr 108) 2:45:00 [2] 9.0 km (18:20 / km) +1050m 11:35 / km

Gorge with Stuart. It was snowing through the day and increasing slough management was required with each run. Two big climbs today - first run down involved a traverse into the far left runs. The traverse seemed longer than I expected. The skier's right of the cliff has really nice open treed terrain though (and seemed better than the left side). We skied out from the top of the second climb which involved a little traversing. Good snow though had to get used to the shorter skis.

Strength 30:00 [3]

Hip program.
10 AM

Classic ski 1:40:00 [3] 20.0 km (5:00 / km) +480m 4:28 / km

A warm up with Milo then 10 x 2 min Z4 with 1 min rest.

Run 46:00 [2] 7.25 km (6:21 / km) +20m 6:16 / km
shoes: Icebug Green

Greenbelt with Milo. A little soft but acceptable.

Skate ski 50:00 [2] 9.0 km (5:33 / km) +180m 5:03 / km

An easy ski to take Milo for some exercise. My back really tightened up overnight so I wasn't able to push hard anyway. I thought some easy exercise would help with recovery though. We ran into Doug and Helen who were visiting town.

Skate ski 2:00:00 [2] 28.0 km (4:17 / km) +455m 3:58 / km

Canmore Nordic again - Mike kept Brenda company while Courtney and I went for a ski on our own. We checked out some different trails than yesterday - enjoyed SIlvertip though more variable snow coverage (it had been freshly groomed which was nice). I thought we were done after 20 km but it turned out Mike and Brenda had gone all the way to the end of Banff Trail so we skied back to find them. My back started getting a little sore towards the end (and needed some fuel as well). A warm and windy day with a headwind heading out from the stadium.
