| Lovely run from home out to Milford Common, then a big loop on Sherbrook as far as the Rifle Ranges. Back down Oldacre and over the fields from Brocton. Felt pretty fresh, but I wasn't pushing too hard. Hip ached but didn't get any worse. Saw upwards of 40 deers out there, including a group of 10 young stags with chonking big antlers having a sparring match, plus a group of girly deers looking after their cute little baby ones. Ripper. |

| Morning jog out along the canal and back over Jacob's ladder. It was so wam I had to take off my hat, gloves and jacket half way round. I put my gloves back on soon after. Felt okay, hip a bit sore. |
 | Running intervals 18:00 [5] | |
| shoes: Nike Air Zoom Vomero +2 |
| 4x 1km (off 4.30) at Rowley Park. Hip got progressively worse and had to pull out of the 5th rep. Still, pushed hard all the way despite wind, cold and loneliness. Bit of a boo at the end, but feeling better now and, before the attackpoint police jump on board, I'm gonna see a physio this week. 3.05, 3.06, 3.04, 3.09. |

| With Gracie round and round the track, mainly discussing how athletics is probably the most boring, monotonous, mentally tough sport of any. |

| From home, round the Chase a bit and back. Stayed light for longer than I thought it would, so I didn't have to do too much on roads. Felt alright. |
Sunday Feb 24 |
 | Orienteering race (Brimham Regional Event) 45:32 [5]8 km (5:42 / km) +240m 4:57 / km | |
| shoes: adidas swoops |
| Good little hit out round a nice little area. Would be great if Oli or Neil mapped it at 1:7500 and it was a middle race (i.e. no need for long boring legs across moorland to make up the distance). Course seemed a bit scared of going in the best bits of the terrain. Oh well, can't grumble, it was good. Just a shame when you can see how good that race could have been. Then there's Neil being hungover, Rob being knackered, Speakey recovering from injury, OJ out coaching, Marcus running down a course, Tim being old...... But, hey, it's all about focussing on your own orienteering, and mine was pretty solid today. Running without a compass is becoming natural now - haven't used one since WOC. |

| Took Gracie for a run out in the peaks. Plan was to go to Rivelin, but changed my mind at the last minute and went up Stanage Pole instead. It was really windy and miserable. Oh well. |

| Stopped off for a run along Frogatt and White Edges with Gracie on our way back to Stafford. Bit grey and dark, but not overly cold. It clicked that the Wellington and Nelson monuments in the Peak District would be named after the same people as Mt Wellington and Mt Nelson in Hobart. |

| Evening run out on the roads round Sheffield with Rach and Grace. Not too cold and not too many discussions about knitting, shopping and kittens. |
Tuesday Feb 19 |
 | Running intervals 22:00 [5] | |
| shoes: Nike Air Zoom Vomero +2 |
| 5x 1km (off 4.30) at Rowley Park track with Gracie. It was too cold and lonely and shorts was a big big mistake. I bashed out a set of reps though so happy with that - not fussed about the times, which were ok anyway. I got in a big boo when my watch stopped working and stomped around and shouted. 3.09, 3.10, 3.09, 3.07, 3.08. |

 | Orienteering race (Beaudesert Regional Event) 56:30 [5]9.7 km (5:49 / km) | |
| shoes: adidas swoops |
| Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Got halfway to the start and realised I'd have to go back to the car and get my gloves. Very cold icy day, but sunny. Ran pretty good except for a mistake of nearly a minute at number 6. Terrain and hill strength isn't all that at the mo but speed on tracks felt alright. Felt dirty looking at the results and seeing SYO next to my name. |

| Took Gracie out for a wee jaunt round some of my old haunts. From home, along the canal, over Milford Common up to Brocton Coppice, down to Brocton and back to Walton via Jacobs Ladder. Lovely crisp, frosty, sunny winter day which I think even Gracie warmed to slightly after a bit. Saw some o-kites on the coppice and then bumped into Marcus and some others, which was nice. |

| Last race in Oz for some time, and it was a cracker I thought. Nice and fast, not many paths, bits of tricky detail. Felt like I was running well but a few small wobbles cos not used to being able to orienteer at that speed. Got beat by Trevor Jacobs on the handicap. |

 | Running race (Acton Ferry 5km) 15:58 [5]5 km (3:12 / km) vdot: 64.7 | |
| shoes: Nike Air Zoom Vomero +2 |
| Put a lot of effort into this one, thinking it would be a faster course than the Stromlo XC. And it was judging by the times of those around me. But I was 18 secs slower, probably cos I haven't as good a build-up, and probably cos I did the first half too fast. That was BJ's fault though. BJ did a good job of talking up how slow he was gonna be and how he was just gonna sit behind me, before nailing the first 2km. I foolishly stuck with him until he suddenly dropped off, and I gradually died all the way back. Still, really pleased to be sub-16 again, and I did this course in 16.06 in March 07. I think I just run quicker on grass. |

| 15 x 3mins (1min) Foxdal stylee so not flat out and jogging recovery. Felt pretty good except for the uphill bits. Out round the circumcision track on Blackie, down and round the lake a bit, under Tuggers parkway, through the Himalayan Cedars (planted 1928), through the Cork Oaks and back up to Aranda. |

 | Orienteering race (Campbell Park) 29:30 [4] | |
| shoes: adidas swoops |
| I've realised that I just can't beat Trevor Jacobs on the handicap no matter what I do, so I wasn't too bothered that my legs were quite tired from my earlier run. Rob Walter planned a goodun with some control picking in unusually green terrain for Canberra. Made a couple of booboos too. |

| 6x almost-1km reps at Aranda ovals. Had to help at XC tonight, so did this sesh instead. Just made a big lap that took about 3mins and did 6 of them. Then ran a straight hard so that I could convince myself that I'd done 6km of effort. Pushed really hard, running ok. 3.04, 2.56, 2.55, 2.54, 2.57, 2.52, 0.55. (1.30mins recovery each time) |

| Hard race-pace run out on the roads. Eventually got to the edge of Canberra out in Macgregor and wiggled my way back via Melba. Spent the afternoon tearing my hair out to an icecream van which eventually went away, then went for my run, then caught it up over in Macgregor. Had Greensleeves back in my head for the rest of the run. Grrrrrrrr annoying. |
 | Running 20:00 [3] | |

| Nice cruise round the Pinnacle, round the back of Mt Painter, over Aranda, down the bike path to the ovals and back along Redfern Street. I hate Redfern Street - it's boring, uphill and a lot longer than you think. Other than that it was nice to have an easier day. |
