Running 35:00 [3]
shoes: adidas swoops
Checking my courses at Valley Park for a park race (was gonna call it a sprint-o but they have certain standards). It rained a bit. The wood was quite nice, would make an ok sprint area, map could do with updating...

Grouse, Froggatt, Nelson's Monument, White Edge with monkeyboy. Haven't run with Neil for a while, but he's still shit.

Friday Jun 27

Running 42:00 [3]
shoes: adidas swoops
Parked at top of coppice track then took Gracie along the top of Rivelin, down to the dam and back up said track. Not such a bad evening to be out and felt good to be out running on the paths in Rivelin again (has been a while).

After applying Otex eardrops to my left ear I can now hear through it for the first time since the water park in Latvia.
Running 47:00 [3]

Ran with Gracie to Hunters bar then up and down Endcliffe parks a bit doing some long intervals.

Running 35:00 [3]

Lame effort at running again after Norway. Popped round Tim Tett's to pay him some money and picked up some sprint-o maps so ran some of the middle course from the BBQ. Couldn't be assed going to most of the controls though.

Orienteering race (O-fest Long) 2:13:00 [3]
shoes: jalas o-shoes
Longest, toughest, hardest course I've done in a long time. It was just one of them that I'm glad I did and I'm glad I finished it. Never really felt like I was racing cos of the toughness of the terrain and hit the wall after about 80mins. Usually there isn't too much further in a classic, but this one had an extra 53mins in store for me, so I hit a few more walls. Seconds and minutes went out of the window, as did route choice (the route with the most on paths being the optimum for my jelly legs), it was all about getting to the finish. Actually navigated quite cleanly and got one over most of the people that started around me. Hung in there, and as more and more people cracked and gave up, managed to move up to 11th overall. Course was nothing like the World Cup, situation totally different, and not bothered by the time anyway. It was great just being able to enjoy such a long, tough course in fantastic terrain without having to worry about much else.
C • Wow, tough course 1
Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]
shoes: jalas o-shoes
15 warm-up. 0 warm-down. Bite me.

Friday Jun 20

Event: Norsk O Festivalen

Orienteering race (O-fest Middle) 36:30 [4]
shoes: jalas o-shoes
Ah yeah, quality orienteering. Has been a while since I've o-ed in Scandi-land. Not easy rocking up to Norway late one night, leaving your wallet on a bus, spending the morning retrieving your wallet, spending the afternoon spectating on a World Cup race, then finally racing in tough Norwegian terrain in the evening. But I orienteered pretty well in the main - one costly mistake of 1-2mins, but only hesitations otherwise. Bit of practice in this stuff would have saved me some time, but I think the key factor is running technique in this kind of terrain. Started in a Hakan Eriksson, Johan Ivarsson sandwich which was exciting. Would've been nice to catch Hakan and see what he does.
Running warm up/down 40:00 [2]

20 up and 20 down.

Travelling to Norway to cheer on GG :o)

Wednesday Jun 18

Running 59:00 [4]
shoes: Nike Air Zoom Vomero +2
Train was 50mins late so I filled in the waiting time at Leeds station by having a couple of pints. Wasn't gonna let that stop me running though. In fact, it made me run faster cos I couldn't judge my starting pace as well and once I've started at a pace I don't like letting up. Went up Rivelin and Coppice track.

Running intervals 30:00 [4]
shoes: Nike Air Zoom Vomero +2
Took off the athlete shoes and donned the coach shoes and whip and took Gracie on some 90x30 Foxdal intervals round Rivelin. I think I was extremely motivational. It was far from being an easy session for me but I felt fairly good after my week off and it was a lovely evening.

Went to Graves Park and played pitch and putt with Grace, Jasmine and Craig. Then went to see some animals, had lunch in Wetherspoons and coffee in Endcliffe Park.

Back Tor loop from Fairholmes with Gracie. Really enjoyed being back in the Peaks for the first time in ages and nice to just be able to enjoy running again. To cap it all off, went to LJ's and had the usual :o) Happy days.

Saw Neil Conway coming out Waterstones so broke into a jog to claim a non-Sheffield based orienteer not running. What's that, 10 points? Sure Sprotty won't mind me claiming that.

Booooooooooooooooooo. Wasn't expecting to get in the WOC team after the weekend, so not surprised, and knew that this might happen prior to the weekend (being behind 4 deadcerts and only 5 places up for grabs), so was prepared for a WOCless year. But despite my recent downward spiral, if I had seen the flag at number 8 in the sprint as I passed within 50cm of it, I would've won the sprint and would be in the team. I should have been a lot higher in the middle, but that was my own fault for not orienteering properly. There is definitely a skill to doing courses in crap like that, but it's not one that I've practiced or raced in the last few years, and not one that will be needed at WOC. I was tired and dehydrated on Sunday and never stood a chance feeling like that. The selector has decided not to let me run in the World Cup in Norway despite that fact that I'm going to it and there will be 5 unused spots.

Sunday Jun 8

Event: HOC National Event, Brown Clee

Orienteering race 45:00 [3]
shoes: jalas o-shoes
Some of the long race til I blew up. I'm glad I didn't read the pre-race details as I might have felt a slight twinge of guilt as I continued crossing all of the fences regardless.

Saturday Jun 7

Orienteering race 15:14 [5]
shoes: Nike Air Zoom Vomero +2
WOC sprint trial. Winning at #7 then the silliest mistake ever at #8 which cost me it. Route choice to #6 looks to have cost me 10secs. Other than that I ran really well, so on any other day I would've been really pleased with myself.
Orienteering race 40:14 [5]
shoes: jalas o-shoes
WOC middle trial. 7th, but was up in 3rd at #14. Very scrappy after that - probably as I was trying too hard and didn't feel like I was doing very well (in terms of mistakes and shape, I wasn't doing very well, but it looks like no-one else was). Should've done better. Can't say I enjoyed that course very much - it looks great on the map, just pants in real life.

Running intervals 20:00 [5]
shoes: Nike Air Zoom Vomero +2
10x 90sec intervals (30secs rec) at lunchtime round Meanwood. Felt pretty good, got a decent comfortable pace going on. Drank too much coffee pre-run.
Running 17:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Air Zoom Vomero +2
Before and after. Way too humid in the showers at work and still sweating as I got back to my desk despite having a cold shower.

Wednesday Jun 4

Running 45:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Air Zoom Vomero +2
Meanwood and the uni area after work. Found another burnt out car that I hadn't seen before.

Tuesday Jun 3

Note
(rest day)
Giving the achilles some recovery and trying to catch up on rest. After Grace's alarm got us up at 7.20am, I was eating my brekkie and commented to Grace how strange it was that both my watch and phone said it was 5.30am (thinking there'd been some weird clock-stopping power surge or something). She then realised her phone was on Latvian time and we'd gotten up 2 hours early. We laughed and laughed and laughed and went back to bed.

Monday Jun 2

Note
(rest day)
Got to bed at 4am just as it was getting light. Got up at 7.20am to go to work. Feeling a little jaded. Still partially deaf from the water park on Friday.

Sunday Jun 1

Orienteering race 43:00 [5]
shoes: adidas swoops
The first 8.7km of the relay until the control circle at the penultimate control, and the last 0.5km of the relay from there to the finish. Ran quite well with Jarkko Huovila and nice and in control.
Cocking about race 3:00 [1]
shoes: adidas swoops
At the penultimate control of the relay progessively getting in more and more of a boo. Really hoped I could end the week on a good note, but didn't.
Running 2:00:00 [2]
shoes: adidas swoops
A complete stab in the dark at how much warming up and warming down I did last week. Very frustrating week, not many positives to take from it, except that I am a God at rounders and I am better than GG on waterslides.
