Sunday Feb 25

Orienteering race 36:14 [4]*** 6.3 km (5:45 / km) +275m 4:43 / km
24c shoes: O shoes
Last race of the week. Went out with the intention of running as cleanly as I could. Made only a handful of small mistakes, less than 2 minutes so happy with that. Still would have liked to have been able to push a little harder, but body not playing. Think I am orienteered out now.
Note
It's been a fantastic week. Thanks to Neil for organising, and everyone else for making it so relaxed and so much fun. The events and training were all so different so we got a good range of technical training. Hopefully we can all push on from here and have a successful o season.

Saturday Feb 24

Event: NAOM - Norte Alentejano O Meeting

Running warm up/down 20:00 [3]4 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: O shoes
Warm up run to the start, and then warm down jog with Oli and Neil after the race.
Orienteering race 1:33:56 [4]*** 15.2 km (6:11 / km) +395m 5:28 / km
30c shoes: O shoes
WRE event. Mostly open area, with complex rocky outcrops. Very fast running, with mostly short grass underfoot. I say fast running, but I just couldn't make my body run fast. Made one stupid 5 minute mistake, but pretty clean apart from that. Tired. Annoyed I couldn't go faster.
Running warm up/down 15:00 [3]3 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Asics trail shoes
Warm up / down for night race.
Orienteering race 16:01 [4]* 3 km (5:20 / km)
15c
Hey, I've got a good idea. Why don't we do a night sprint after a WRE classic race? Madness. Quite a simple course, but had a good run. Tried to push hard but couldn't get heart rate high. Finished 4th, about 15 secs down on Neil and 75 secs down on Oystein. Happy with that.

Friday Feb 23

Orienteering 41:56 [3]**** 7 km (5:59 / km)
21c shoes: Asics trail shoes
Last sand dune exercise before travelling to the next event. Today is an easy day before a WRE classic on Saturday. Map memory today, did OK but brain a bit tired for this kind of thing!
Orienteering 37:04 [3]*** 5 km (7:25 / km)
shoes: Asics trail shoes
Model event for the NAOM event. Went out with Oli for a jog around and to see how things were mapped. The map was rubbish, and extremely inconsistent, hope it's better for tomorrow.

Thursday Feb 22

Orienteering 1:29:23 [3]**** 10.7 km (8:21 / km)
39c shoes: O shoes
I was in a bad mood this morning from the off. Not really sure why, but wasn't up for orienteering at all. Also, my body is starting to break down. Ankle sore, right shin sore, right heel sore. It was loops, and Oli had planned an extra control pick. Never got into the map, found it much harder than yesterday. All in all not a good morning.
Orienteering 53:14 [3]**** 6.3 km (8:27 / km) +120m 7:43 / km
23c shoes: Asics trail shoes
A middle distance race on Costa de Lavos. Needed to enjoy my orienteering again. Changed my shoes to try and make things hurt less, which worked a bit. Went out hard, made a few mistakes, but most importantly of all I enjoyed it. My vigour has been renewed.

Wednesday Feb 21

Running 18:17 [2]4 km (4:34 / km)
shoes: Asics trail shoes
I woke up and it was really nice and sunny, got a bit excited and dragged Oli out for a pre-breakfast jog. Went out to the lighthouse, along the boardwalk above the crags, onto the beach and then back through San Pedro to the camp site. It was nice to get out, but my ankle was sore.
Orienteering 1:25:49 [3]**** 11.8 mi (7:16 / mi)
38c shoes: O shoes
Butterfly loops on Pedreanes. Three loops of varying length and technicality. Used the first loop to get into the map, trying to visualise the leg and the control circle. Then ran the second two loops without a compass. It was quite hard in places but really made me think about what I was doing and ended up being a useful exercise.
Orienteering 1:01:53 [3]**** 8.4 km (7:22 / km)
33c shoes: O shoes
Praia da Vieira. Ran this exercise harder than this morning, trying to simplify the legs down and run hard into the control circle. Got together with Rob about half way round and we ran together, taking different lines and having a bit of a race through the controls. Enjoyed it, and pleased with my navigation at speed.

Tuesday Feb 20

Orienteering race 54:24 [4]***** 5.4 km (10:04 / km) +180m 8:38 / km
30c
POM day 4. Chasing start. I had an awful run. Started off OK, but then started to make a few mistakes, hurt my ankle and hobbled the last half. Ready to get away from these rocks and play in some sand dunes.
Running warm up/down 15:00 [3]2 km (7:30 / km)
Warm up / down from race.
Orienteering 42:48 [3]**** 5.4 km (7:56 / km) +110m 7:12 / km
17c shoes: O shoes
Rob, Oli, Neil and myself took ourselves off training on the way across to our next accomodation, some sand dunes near Mira. It was quite nice to run on different terrain, and it was also sunny and warm. Just used the exercise to get into the sand dunes.

Monday Feb 19

Running 16:00 [2]3 km (5:20 / km)
shoes: Asics trail shoes
Early morning jog with Rob and Oli. Weather not looking overly good again.
Orienteering race 43:24 [4]***** 4.6 km (9:26 / km) +215m 7:39 / km
shoes: O shoes
POM day 3. This was proper TD 6 orienteering on a very complex wooded rocky slope. I started off sloppy and got caught 2 mins by Damien at number 5. We then alternated the lead until about 19 when he got away from me. Ended up being a good (albeit French assisted) run.
Running warm up/down 40:00 [3]6 km (6:40 / km)
Warm up and long warm down jog with Oli.
