Orienteering race 1:13:04 [4] *** 4.76 mi (15:21 / mi)

12.45pm: NAOC - Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada - Long - Croucher Creek
Good course, not overly difficult technically, just physical terrain. Had slight problem with control 5 as there was a definite group of boulders not far from the control that wasn’t on the map. 5-6 cut through on straight line to start with then took the road trail option as tired and little thinking required. Control 8was noted as a shallow depression, there was a shallow depression just before the control depression which certainly wasn’t shallow. Drifted to the right on way to 9.9-10was a bear, heavy undergrowth and seemed to take for ever to get to trail. This is the area a number of people saw a bear chewing berries, alas I did not. Happy with result considering how little orienteering I have done recently.

NAOC - Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada: Model event
11.25am: Did the model event choosing options to avoid trails where possible. Interesting terrain with a lot of contour features. Have to focus on map to know whether a hill or depression as not obvious in places. It was well worth while getting out on map.
Listened to a talk/ briefing on how to deal with bears which was really interesting.
Good to be orienteering again with Alison. Glad she persuaded me to go to NAOC.
