Sunday Jun 17

Note
Rest day - travelling all day and night back home to Sheffield. Got no real sleep at Jukola apart from 40 winks in a chair.

Indebted to JJ and OJ for driving the "graveyard" of all graveyard shifts home back to Sheffield - thanks guys.

Saturday Jun 16

Orienteering 30:00 [2]
Easy run on the training area adjacent to Jukola area. Jogging easily and spiking all the controls spot on. Map and compass still seemed a bit strange in places (same as model for the sprint).

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]
Lots of WU - really excited, hardly any WD - really gutted (isn't life strange)
Orienteering race 1:25:00 [4]
My mantra was spike the first control, all the advice I had received was spike the first control......guess what? I fucked up the first control (big style). Went through first split in the 850s and worked my way to finish up 437. Just wasn't "orienteering" during the race, and not keeping contact.

It was certainly a unique experience that I will savour.

Friday Jun 15

Orienteering 1:00:00 [3]
Steady run around a Jukola warm up map. This area was really sexy and I was orienteering nicely - just a few very minor wobbles.

Quite stiff in my hips from the day before.

Thursday Jun 14

Event: Orienteering World Cup Event 1

Running 20:00 [1]
Early morning slow jog. Back a bit stiff but legs felt sharp.
Running warm up/down 20:00 [3]
WU+WD from sprint qualifier.
Orienteering race 15:00 [5]
Sprint qualifier. Had loads of problems around number 1, where I lost about 1 minute, but had a really good race after that. Orienteering was slick and flow was good. Would have finished 9th if you take out that split which I would have been really pleased with.

When I got my map back found out that I had a black splodge on my map right in front of no 1. The ink from a number had got onto the map and it looks like someone had tried to scratch it off. After protest I got reinstated into the A final. Really chuffed to be in final, but would have liked to have done it "properly".
Running warm up/down 30:00 [1]
WU+WD for the final. Long WD back into Lapua to pick up the car.
Running race 15:00 [5]
Sprint final - started number 1. Although really nervous pleased with how I ran - particularly as the first control was in view of the start and I did not know this until I started - from that point on everyone knew where the control was!

Took safe routes and felt running strongly. Made one navigational error at the last but one control which cost me 20 seconds - I was online, but saw the girl's control and it proved too much of a temptation. Would have been pleased with a top 35 (knew I was running too safely to push up any further). As it was I was satisfied but it would have been nice to have got a World Cup point - next time!

In terms of pressure and excitement this was one of the most fun races I have done.
C • Good stuff 4

Wednesday Jun 13

Orienteering 25:00 [2]
Run around model sprint area. Map was not 100% perfect by any stretch of the imagination! Good to find some controls though - felt good.
Orienteering 5 [4]
Ran 5 minutes worth of a course at race pace.
Orienteering 35:00 [2]
Afternoon training on forest sprint - area adjacent to the sprint final. Had some fun because again map was not 100%. They had just blown up sections of the 1:10 000 map. Also turns out some of the rocks are magnetic which effects the compass! This will be the same for the jukola area so that will be interesting!

Tuesday Jun 12

Orienteering 1:20:00 [3]
Running one of the Jukola warm up maps. Forest was not quite as sexy as it looked on the map. Did a line and then the course and was going quite slowly, and consequently only made one minor miss. So overall a good session.

Mossies were mean.
C • Congrats rob on making the fin... 3
Note
Staying at a cool old school house 13k out of Lapua. House owned by a Finnish photographer, who speacialises in taking pictures of flying squirrels.

My mission is now to spot one in the forest!

Monday Jun 11

Running 30:00 [1]
WU+WD before sprints. Met a friendly drunk.
Orienteering 35:00 [4]
Did the qualifier and final from Finish sprint champs. Surprised how ordinary the courses were, but they were enjoyable all the same. Forest was nice.
