Mtn Bike race 3:17:27 [5] +1295m

Nimby-Fifty XC Mountain Bike Race (Pemberton) - Having done the Test of Metal last year, I wanted to give another local classic a go. 'Nimby' is a 11.7k climb and 'Fifty' is a trail that runs along the top of the mountain...hence the name...not the distance.

In any case, we were spoiled with the weather. It was as though the switch to summer flipped and we went from 10C and raining every day to a long-weekend of 25C+ and sunny. Wow!

I settled into the climb and didn't push it too hard, knowing that there was a lot of course left afterward. The climb itself is quite technical, with switchback after switchback of very tight turns and little hop ups. I held onto a few different people to keep my pace up and before long, I was at the top and felt pretty good and hydrated in the heat.

Red Bull Downtime section came up quickly thereafter and I was shown how it was supposed to be done by one dude who went by me like is life depended on it. I honestly can't believe how quickly he was cooking along the track we were on. Another level out here.

The rest of the course was pretty technically challenging for me. My dropper post was up and down over and over again and I think I'm finally getting used to the pattern. Lots to think about with so many options on my bars - gears, dropper, suspension. I get why some people go hard tail and just keep it simple.

A few big bails for my poor bike and I with a stem that had to be re-adjusted, a bent rear rotor, and a derailleur which took one knock too many. Thankfully, none of these took me (or my bike!) out of the race as there were definitely some doozies.

Good times out there and I look forward to checking out the Pemby trails a little more some other time.

First o-session of 2017 and I was quite rusty. The course was out of Deep Cove and they did a really good job of linking together all of the natural spaces. Even when some of the CPs were 50-75m apart, the technical level of the terrain made it extremely difficult to move quickly or find the CPs easily. In fairness, they don't use o-flags for extra challenge...they just use little wire sections with 6 x 6 cm flags on the end. I had a great race against Gary Robbins and he trounced me in the end. I shall have my revenge...

Killer church session...the 4 minute wall-sit was particularly fun.

Road Ride 1:31:00 [3] +514m

After a full day of rain and 10C, why not head out into the thick of it for maximum 'enjoyment'? And, that's what I did before I got too cold. Head-to-toe waterproofs certainly helped in my jaunt to the Seymour dam and back. Always such mystical views back there of the surrounding mountains amongst low lying clouds.

MEC Crank-It MTB - What does a married man do to celebrate Mother's Day? Participate in an XC MTB race, of course! And then make dinner for the family later on, too.

This did not quite go as I had hoped. 5-6 younger guys pinned it off the hop and I settled into the Mountain HWY climb to Espresso just behind another guy who was a bit faster than me. It was a good place to be in as it would give me a rabbit to try to keep up with. Into Espresso at the 5k mark and I hit the trail decently hard. I was very clean, save for one walk down, and was nearing the Dempsey trail when I hit an obstacle fairly hard with my front wheel. A loud metallic sound ensued, followed by another on the next rock and I stopped to check it out. Sure enough, I had burped the air almost completely out of my front tire. ^&*^&!

Out came the pump (of course I didn't bring my CO2...%^&, why would I?...won't make that mistake again) and I got it back up quickly as the chase guys flew by. I went to take off the pump from the presta valve and SSSSSSSS, out came all of the air along with 1/2 of the valve itself. %^&*(! Of came the tire, out came the tools and tube, Stan's flew everywhere, and I eventually got it back up again. My flow now gone, along with the ENTIRE pack now, and I was off onto the climbing trail back up to Mountain HWY. 1/2 way up, I had to fill up the rear tire more. Checking my MovesCount just now, I lost 13 minutes in all as well race pace as I rode solo from there on out.

In any case, I bombed 7th Secret, Crinkum Crankum, Leopard, and Kirkford as best as I could and even dropped in on one particularly steep stunt given my new found confidence having watched Carbon's Offset do the same a couple of weeks ago.

"So nice" to see my name in one place up from DFL on the race standings but now that I've paid my karma dues to the race gods, I figure I'll race clearly at Nimby 50 next weekend.
