Orienteering race 38:00 [3] 3.7 km (10:16 / km)
shoes: Jalas Blacks

Relays - second leg, second team.

Big error at control 3 - too high up and had to drop down onto it. After that, got two route choices wrong (5 & 6) but not too bad. Then relatively strong through the last circuit.

But, on download I mispunched no 3... I know I punched the right control as it was on D's course and I was able to describe it perfectly. All I can assume is that it didn't register by e-card, but that's weird as I don't exactly punch fast and I have a v6 card. Plus the control was in the bottom of a big pit so I had to clamber down and back up - wasn't exactly trying to "not break control flow". There was someone else there at the same time so perhaps I heard her unit beep and thought it was mine. Anyway, I will take much more care in future - sorry Laura and Jan. (who were both really nice about it)

Pretty grim weekend - hope I improve soon. Thinking of going up to the Lakes for Twin Peaks so that will give me a chance to try to improve on technical stuff.

Orienteering race 1:12:00 [3] 8.3 km (8:40 / km) +250m 7:32 / km
shoes: Jalas Blacks

British Champs - Pwll Du.

Absolute disaster - should have been able to pull a good run out of the bag, but it all went horribly wrong after the second road crossing.

Set off reasonably well, struggled a bit with the map but was generally moving OK. Had a 3 min miss at c19, when I used a fence to attack the control, but got the wrong fence corner. (Stupid, after coping with the contours up till then) Frustrated, but then hit the next control perfectly. Next leg was c. 200m up to a depression in a spur, and just stopped too soon. Got confused by an elephant track which I thought was a mapped track, and then wasted 12 mins hunting around too soon. Eventually relocated by asking someone where I was... Gutted. Lost 1 min at the next control by going to the bottom of the spur rather than the top, and then 2 mins at the next by not having a clear attack point and just running to the first flag I saw. Finally lost 2 mins at the next control (penultimate) by not reading teh map carefully and ending up having to scramble up a steep scree slope.

So from being 2 mins ahead of Anna at the second road crossing I finished 20 mins behind. I know why I made the various errors, but I just don't know why they all happened at once! Really disappointed.
