Friday Nov 23

Note
I was thinking about logging my daily work-home ride, since I have started to use my O-shoes with spikes to walk on the icy snow. But, they are so good at clearing snow that it is not worth it. I should better buy myself a pair of waterproof hiking shoes (or Sealskinz sockets :))

Tuesday Nov 20

Note
First snow... And tomorrow is my birthday: it will be a first time under a white blanket, that's for sure! (I'm so used to the rainy/windy/cold/grey November month in Nantes - perhaps I will miss it)

Running long (All terrain) 1:31:00 [3] 13.95 km (6:31 / km) +400m 5:42 / km
shoes: Asics Gel 1090
Never had such a regular training schedule: once a week!

I contacted Thomas so as to run on the Mount Royal one last time before the winter is coming (good flair, could be snowing as soon as tomorrow). We had a long discussion about many things, including training, orienteering life, and running opportunities in Montreal - there could be a lot more than the Parc Jarry in my neighborhood and that's great news! Thomas also showed me how to access the railtrack - a quiet & nicer ground to run.

As for the run, we took the magic route of Thomas through the park, climbing to each three summits (each about 200m high), and mostly offtracks of course. With all leaves down now, and a crispy, almost frozen ground, it makes some good sensations, especially since there was a great sun and no wind.

Sunday Nov 11

Orienteering race (Score O) 1:41:00 [4] *** 13.61 km (7:25 / km) +538m 6:12 / km
40c shoes: Falcon VJ
The biggest event of the season here in Montreal: a score O in Park Mount Royal, right in the middle of the town. This is appealing to people, that is... around 150 people - still a long way to go and catch participation.

Mass start after two minutes of strategy to plan your routes! And it's rather difficult since there is some big hills, steep descents (and climbs). Good race settings, the right choice were less than evident. I probably made some strategic mistakes here, which good orienteers around, who have already ran the course several times, dont make anymore - lost 15 minutes to the first three, Francis (Rogaine-fond), took the 4th position behind an Estonian who lives in Toronto (and went to WMTBO) and Thomas. Of course a couple of mistakes, not very important. Strategy and route choices were very important.

Like previous races, I finish nearly exhausted, which is a sign that I did manage my effort, but also that I cant get more than 1h30 at regular speed right now. Had to practice this winter with cross-country skiing (it will be a first!) as it was the last race of the year for foot orienteering - there should be some ski O (I have been told the story of a guy who came at a ski O, an orienteer but not a skier - he took a quick lesson and did the race - way to go I guess)

Wednesday Nov 7

Note
I am literally sick of running on pavement. OK, not sick, but injured. Since Monday, I feel a slight inflammation at the hip and thigh joint, perhaps a bursitis.

Sunday Nov 4

Running 59:00 [2] 10.6 km (5:34 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel 1090
Still once a week, keep the log busy... Thought of the day: "a little wind makes a harder workout" - not that there was a lot of wind, but this makes the difference between a cool, enjoyable, sunny run, and a cooler, do-not-stop, quick-to-home run.

Parc Jarry and Mont Royal area (not the park, a distinct upper-middle class neighbourhood north of the park - I guess there is something interesting to say about how this district was built as kind of ideal city, but that's it for today)
