Wednesday Jul 30

Cycling long 1:50:00 [3] 27.5 km (4:00 / km) +300m 3:48 / km
Come back ride on some well-known tracks around house. Well, it appears as almost nothing has changed around here, and this was a great void emptiness, with holidays around.

Monday Jul 28

Note
And flight back to France for one month.

Sunday Jul 27

Hiking 6:00:00 [2] ** 9 km (40:00 / km) +800m 27:42 / km
shoes: MT800 New Balance
L'Acropole des Draveurs (raftmans ? curieux ce pluriel) in the Parc des Hautes Gorges, a "young" glaciated valley with 800m cliffs, Charlevoix backcountry. The goal is simple: start from the bottom and go to the top. Never seen such a steep ascent, with so many rock stairs. Of course it's worth it, with quite a radical change of vegetation at the summit, where no tree grow because of the harsh winter and winds.

We did the ascent with quite an inexperienced guy, so most of the time we were motivating him to go one step further. Well he did it back and forth :)

Note
Also realize that the very fuzzy discomfort in my right knee (which must be some kind of patellar tendonitis) should be linked to a very fuzzy contracture in my right knee (which I have felt for many months too). All in all most certainly a consequence of my exclusive running diet, with lack of stretching, stationary working position, etc. Well 50% of the solution is admitting the problem they say. Now should be a good time to go see a physiotherapist.

Saturday Jul 26

Hiking 1:00:00 [2] 3 km (20:00 / km) +250m 14:07 / km
shoes: MT800 New Balance
A short but steep hike in Parc du Saguenay, near Cap Trinité (or Cap Éternité, both on the same inlet). We didn't have time to make the whole ascent, but the view was still amazing: steep hills with forest everywhere, right above the fjord.
Note
Early but not so early (at 9am), we went to see the whales in the Golfe du Saint Laurent. By boat (not so eco-friendly). Again a nice experience with lots of photo, even if any whale picture looks like another whale picture (that is, a dark blue back with a fin).

Friday Jul 25

Note
On the road to Charlevoix and Saguenay, halting at Tadoussac for the night. Some sightseeing and nice photo trip.

Wednesday Jul 23

Running tempo 1:21:00 [3] 14 km (5:47 / km) +470m 4:57 / km
shoes: MT800 New Balance
Not much to say, training is a bit sluggish because I want to do so much before going to France next week. It's weird when I think it is my last time on Mount Royal until 2 months. My briton 6th sense - the weather sense - totally failed me today: I get caught in a big stormy rain 4 minutes after starting, and the rain didn't stop until the last 20 minutes (including another mid-course big shower)

Monday Jul 14

Running tempo (map reading) 1:08:00 [3] *** 11.5 km (5:55 / km) +380m 5:04 / km
shoes: MT800 New Balance
Mount Royal tempo run. Nothing particular, just running with fun, and slow pace towards the end because it was too dark to see something under cover.

I had a wonderful sighting while crossing a swamp area. A great crowd of luminescent bugs kept flashing their green beacon, looking like they were floating in the air. It made the forest gleaming with green sparkles. Perhaps some fireflies, except I have never seen anything like that in France.

Thursday Jul 10

Running intervals (MAS) 1:22:00 14 km (5:51 / km)
shoes: MT800 New Balance
It appears my log is not very active those days. I wish it could simply autofill, and that my body would actually benefit of this without consuming time, something possible in the e-world but not in the real life it seems. Of course I have plenty of good reason for that, work I want to push before holidays, the heat, and summer in Montreal = lots of festivals - but time to kick my ass.

Did 2x8x30" on Mount Royal trails, so pace was very irregular depending on climbing up, climbing down, being careful with roots... Best interval at 2:53/km because I was sprinting down the hill in front of some mtbs :)
After the intervals I inavertendly stopped my gps so the last 30min of tempo/mixed running were lost. Distance is a guess.

Sunday Jul 6

Cycling long 4:30:00 [2] * 65 km (4:09 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel 1090
Something I wanted to do for a long time now: a big bicycle tour in southern Montreal, following the Saut-Laurent, the islands and the park there. Now I made it! Started in Vieux Port, visited l'île des Soeurs, les rapides de Lachine, got to eat a great lunch at a greek kermesse, went up to René-Lévesque park on Lac Saint-Louis, followed Canal Lachine almost back to start, switch to south shore to take a few snapshots of Habitat 67, then across the river to Parc Jean Drapeau where I followed the F1 circuit. And Back through the Jacques Cartier bridge and old Montreal. That's a pretty big circuit and actually the longest I ever ride, but it was almost flat on good pavement, so much easier than usual cross country.

Wednesday Jul 2

Hiking (Coaching) 1:24:00 [2] *** 5 km (16:48 / km)
shoes: MT800 New Balance
Meet with Julien on the Mount Royal. He is a french student doing his last year internship in Montreal. He practices raid, and contacted John to get some orienteering. So John forwards me his message and here we go! I just showed him the Mount Royal and around, discussing O and the whereabouts.

I logged this as hiking, but in fact I was following him to observe his technique, then we would stop at each control to discuss the map and the technique, etc. So a long time for a very short distance.
Running warm up/down 28:00 [2] 5.5 km (5:05 / km)
shoes: MT800 New Balance
Forth and back to the cepsum.

Tuesday Jul 1

Running 27:00 [2] 4.9 km (5:31 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel 1090
Canada National Day, a beautiful one, hot, sunny but not stormy as the past week-end. Decided it would be a good day to do my test, now that I have my aerodynamic haircut.

Unfortunately my legs felt very heavy from the beginning, and didn't feel better even after warm up. I tried to push a little, but I felt a bit sick whenever I slow down. Finally I called it a day and bypassed the test. I think I would have made it, but not sure in which condition - and it would not have been very significant if I had run with trouble.
Stretch/Core Strength 5:00 [1]
At least I got this part of the training right.
