Orienteering race (Mt Beckworth) 1:38:49 [3]7.8 km (12:40 / km) +335m 10:26 / km
(injured) shoes: Asics GEL Trabuco
Eurkea Challenge at Mt Beckworth. Ran well to the start triangle, then things fell apart. My foot was not good after yesterday which didn't help. I just couldn't concentrate and as such just didn't get into the map at all. I lost a good 4 minutes on 1, had a poor route choice into number 4 through the dark green, and half way to control 6 I started reading the map for 7 so couldn't make it fit no matter how hard I tried. In between I walked a lot.

It was probably the worst orienteering I have done in the last couple of years - certainly the slowest. It is a pity, because the area was good, even if a bit steep. Some of the course setting was a bid so-so out in the flatter areas with a couple of dog-legs. Still, I managed to finish and wasn't last by a long shot.

Just wanted to get going before it got hot.

Event: NOL event 1 & 2

Orienteering race (Spring Gully) 39:34 [4]4.2 km (9:25 / km)

Victorian club relays. Ran in a group 3 team with Geoff Lawford on leg 1, and Mary on leg 3. Geoff, as expected, came in with a lead of about 2.5 minutes over Chris Ellenby in second place. I started well, and despite the heat, ran comfortably up the hill to number 1. Nearing 2 I didn't have a strong attack point and stopped in a vague area expecting to see the control. I guessed right, which was wrong, and relocated off a creek junction, losing about 2 minutes. I picked it up again and was a bit confused coming into 3 with the control description saying large knoll, and the feature in the middle of the circle looking like a drepression. In the end I worked out it was a knoll drawn with a form line contour, which just made it look like a depression. Only lost 5 seconds with the hesitation.

Ran well through controls 4, 5 and 6, but half way to the next control I stood on a very sharp rock in the green which caused a lot of pain in my right foot. It hasn't been the best for over 12 months (the orthotics help but I can't run in them), so things like this don't help.

Besides some difficulty running, my only other mistake was on control 9, which was a shallow gully in the green. I came in a fraction high, and the gully is almost non existant at that point, so ran too far and had to double back a bit lower, losing about 1 minute.

Despite my stuffing around, I managed to extend our lead to about 6 minutes. Unfortunately Mary lost it, and quite a bit more on her first control. Ted V G ran through her for the win, and it came down to a finish chute sprint with Eureka for 2nd, but Mary couldn't quite make it so we finished 3rd. Mind you, her finish chute time was 2 seconds quicker than me so she was really trying hard.

Orienteering race (Remembrance Park) 55:30 [3]5.9 km (9:24 / km)

Twilight series around the slopes of Mt Ainslie. Found the contouring from 3 to 4 to 5 to 6 a bit tiring (it was all on the same foot), but otherwise I really enjoyed the course. I tried to have a nice steady run with no mistakes. My only blemish was a slight drift coming out of 12 but otherwise no problems.

Tuesday Mar 4

Running race 22:40 [4]5 km (4:32 / km) vdot: 43.0
shoes: asics GT-2120
ACT cross country race at Molonglo Reach. This was my fastest time this spring/summer season by nearly a minute, and only 1 or 2 seconds off my best time from last year. Just over 11 minutes to half way and about 30 seconds slower on the way back. I think the intervals over the last few weeks have helped.
