Orienteering race 35:24 [5] 5.6 km (6:19 / km)

JWOC Relay

For the most part it went extraordinarily well. Speed wise I was easily able to pick up and pass trains gaining several places.

I was clean for the most part until number 11 where I lost 30-40 seconds, but I caught the train again so it wasn't such a big loss of time.

The bigger problem was when I twisted my ankle I lost several places and caused me to finish a good minute behind the pack I was with because it threw me off my orienteering.

Overall really happy with this race and more importantly I had a ton of fun (other than my ankle).

Orienteering race 28:24 [5] 3.7 km (7:41 / km)

JWOC Middle Final

Went pretty well. I was happy with my navigation for the most part, but my legs felt a little slow compared the the previous day.

I ran it hard with intention to win the final, but disq on the quali means that your final race doesn't count.

Again, however, it was a good indicator that my speed and technical ability have improved a lot since last year and I hope to continue the trend the following year as well.

Orienteering race 27:52 [5] 4.1 km (6:48 / km)

JWOC Middle Qualifier

In hindsight I should've been more careful reading descriptions considering the number of control codes out there, but I got dragged into the lull of not reading them because I hadn't mispunched in so long...

The terrain was incredibly fast for a middle making for a fun course that incentivized fast running. Speedwise I felt good, but a few small mistakes kicked me out of A-final range and of course mispunching ruined my result.

I'm happy that I didn't have trouble getting into B-final range this year, however.

Great races by Thomas and Julia as well.

Go USA!

Orienteering race 1:28:02 [5] 9.9 km (8:54 / km)

JWOC Long 2019

This was an interesting race. Definitely an improvement from last year and I learned a lot. I don't know how I feel about it because I lost a lot of time, but because I put in such a hard physical effort it ended up okay.

I am really happy with the start getting into 42nd place after the first 8 controls. After that the physical effort really caught up and I had to slow down to read at a decent level especially since my Hungarian ride was gone.

Planning on analyzing more later, but what I've learned is most of my mistakes brewed out of lack of confidence in my route and overall lack of focus from fatigue. When I was focused and confident I found my orienteering to be hugely improved from previous years which is a great sign, plus my physical ability has skyrocketed this past year so I look forward to the middle and next year.
