Running race 1:30:32 [4] 21.1 km (4:17 / km)
am: City to Surf Half Marathon.
Not really confident going into this and was worried about starting too fast and being found out on the hills in the second half of the race, so tried to run conservatively at the start and in the section through Kings Pk. Thought it would be better to go a little bit slower at the start, and pick up the pace later, if possible, rather than blow up near the end!
Start was good. Didn't bother trying to get too close to the front as I wanted to avoid the temptation to go too fast. Was held up only briefly immediately after the start and was able to run freely all the way up St Georges Terrace. The Malcolm St hill was tough so early in the race, but I stuck to the pace I wanted and let all the athletes (and fools) race each other. Felt OK at the top of the hill and settled into a reasonable rythym after that. The field had sorted itself out after about 2k and I slowly started passing some of the people who'd gone too fast at the start. Took water at almost every drink station, but avoided the powerade after I nearly drowned myself with the stuff at one station. The gradual climb up Lovekin Dr to the top of the park was a bit of a grind. Left calf tightened up half way up, but luckily was OK once the main part of the climb was over. Went through the 10k mark in about 42:48. Caught a guy here who was running at the same speed and we ended running most of the way together.
The stretch along Kings Pk Rd and through Subiaco went really well. Felt like I was moving well and we started passing a steady stream of people. The climb up Underwood Ave was a bit of a grind but not too hard and I started to think that I was going to be able finish reasonably well (not die like I did in the Perth 1/2 3 weeks ago). Was a bit tired going up Oceanic Dr. Pleased that I could still push hard at this stage. Went as fast as I could go on the last downhill stretch to the finish and managed to just stay in front of woman who'd put in a big effort in the last couple of k. I think I even managed to stay front of a much younger guy who was trying so hard he sounded like he was going to kark it.
A bit sore and stiff afterwards but hopefully not too bad over the next few days. Didn't quite break 90 but reasonably happy with the effort - it's a tough course. Might even do it again next year.
