Orienteering race (metrO series) 36:11 [4] 6.13 km (5:54 / km) +51m 5:40 / km
13c (injured) shoes: Brooks Beast 17-2

Score course at Ellenbrook. Difficult decision very early on whether to get two controls in the Northeast of the map that were obvious ones to leave out (if anything had to be left out), but I decided I should try and get them all anyway. Wasn't completely sure I would manage that, given the map was a bit larger than at Samson, but after about ten minutes I was confident it would be doable.

My right hamstring was feeling a bit stiff during the climb in the first kilometre and only got worse. After about 3.5 km it started to affect my stride. I wondered if it wouldn't be wiser to call it quits, but just tried to slow down a little and shake it off. However, after 5 km my hamstring popped. Not as bad as at ECU Mt Lawley four-and-a-half years ago, but bad enough to leave me no option but to walk back to the start. Turned out I ran the same route as eventual winner Simon, and was already more than 4 minutes ahead of him after 5 km, so I would have been able to get all controls within the hour quite comfortably.

Orienteering 30:06 [2] 2.33 km (12:54 / km) +3m 12:50 / km
18c shoes: Brooks Beast 17-2

Orienteering training with R. I got home from work and he asked me to draw a map and do some training, so I quickly drew a map of the local area, he drew some control circles on it, and we set out to get them all. Lots of stops to read the map, and more stops because we saw three of R's friends one after the other, but good fun.
