Thursday Dec 21

Running 1:09:33 [2] 13 km (5:21 / km)
shoes: Skechers Endorphin
Around the park, then over to some trails east of the park that I hadn't been down before. Would have liked to see where they all went, but didn't have the time.

Wednesday Dec 20

Skiing 1:24:53 [2] 15 km (5:40 / km)
Around the long trail. Conditions were pretty good. Lap times 27:44, 28:07 and 29:02.
Skiing 12:38 [1] 1.55 km (8:09 / km)
To (5:20) and from (7:18) the trail. Ice on lake was no longer slushy.

Tuesday Dec 19

Running 1:07:06 [3] 13.5 km (4:58 / km)
shoes: Skechers Endorphin

Saturday Dec 16

Running intervals 13:30 [4] 3 km (4:30 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (ret.)
Running 1:35:00 [2] 15 km (6:20 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (ret.)

Friday Dec 15

Skiing 1:18:42 [1] 11.5 km (6:51 / km)
Around the long trail twice. Lap times 31:22 and 33:13. Went across the lake to get to and from the trail. It was still slushy in places, but different places than last time. I'll call the length of the new long trail loop 5 K (and that should be pretty accurate; it's not a guess).

Thursday Dec 14

Running 40:00 [1] 6 km (6:40 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (ret.)
Approximate time in [1].
Running 1:15:00 [2] 11.5 km (6:31 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (ret.)
Down south, around the gravel pit for a 40 min or so, and back.

Wednesday Dec 13

Running 24:00 [3] 4.4 km (5:27 / km) +120m 4:48 / km
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (ret.)
Over to the park, and around the eastern hill loop 4 times, going down the middle trail. Times: 1:37, 1:46, 1:50, 1:51. Tough going in the snow.
Running 35:00 [2] 5.5 km (6:22 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (ret.)
Around the park for a bit and back.

Tuesday Dec 12

Skiing 1:01:08 [1] 8.5 km (7:12 / km)
Across the lake, around most of the long trail, and back around the lake. The ice was mushy on the surface in places, and the trails were overrun by snowmobiles and ATVs. The trail's route has been changed in another place, with a section winding through the campground roads being replaced by a straight section of trail. Why?

Monday Dec 11

Skiing 17:39 [1] 2.9 km (6:05 / km)
Around the short trail, which is now a little longer (as is the long trail) as the route has been adjusted a bit. Drove over to the park, and then had to bright idea of trying to park in the parking lot. Just got stuck in the snow. Fortunately some nice man came along and helped me out, but by the time I got out of the parking lot, I didn't have much time left for a ski. At least I had a good ski though -- trails were groomed, I had a (new) pair of matching poles and they held together, and I was able to take my skis off at the end.

Sunday Dec 10

Running 2:05:00 [2] 22 km (5:41 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (ret.)
Similar to yesterday's run, except that I also went over to the western swamp.
C • Party 2

Saturday Dec 9

Running 1:45:00 [1] 16 km (6:34 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (ret.)
Down to timberland, jogged around loop once (time 6:10), through the forest/tangle towards the gravel pit, around the gravel pit for a bit, and back.

Friday Dec 8

Running 44:00 [1] 7 km (6:17 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (ret.)
Over to the park, around the park for a bit, and back.

Monday Dec 4

Cycling (stationary) 13:57 [1] 5 km (2:47 / km)

Sunday Dec 3

Orienteering 1:06:50 [3] 6 km (11:08 / km)
shoes: Adidas Swoop 2
Possum Trot X, Heartland Conference Center & Camp Shawnee, northwest of Kansas City. Too slow too much of the time to count the first loop as [4], so I've logged it separately.

Not the start I wanted, losing the main pack when I didn't skip #2, and then losing any chance at a good result when I boomed #2 by almost 8 minutes. Not sure if I had any semi-logical reasoning for crossing the creek and a fence while I was out there, but I did cross them and ended up off the map to the SW of #2. Motivation was ed out of me as I carried on. Tried to get my speed back up but, with all the iciness, I was having enough trouble staying staying on my feet while going slow.

Was debating between #7 and #11 for my skip. Decided on #7 because I figured that catching up to some people who were about my speed was the only way I'd get moving faster, and skipping earlier would increase my chances of doing that sooner. Seemed to work... a guy who seemed to be moving along fairly well got to #8 shortly before me, and I saw Pete Curtis coming into the control as I left. That helped motivation, and I think that after #8, my speed was as good as it'd get (although that was still somewhat slow). Pete caught up with me at #10, after I made a small mistake on both 9 and 10, and we ran the rest of the loop together.
Orienteering 1:21:15 [4] 8 km (10:09 / km)

Second loop of the Possum Trot. With Pete until #20, lead going back and forth a few times. Got ahead coming out of #20 with when I apparently had an easier route up the hill, and didn't stop for refreshments while Pete did.

I was quite clean and moving better than I was for most of the first loop, but still not as fast as I would have liked. Lost about 10 minutes to the pack that I would have thought I should have been with. Guess speed was still lacking, and perhaps I wasn't managing as well on the ice as I should have (probably could have been more aggressive or skillful, and spikes would have helped). Managed okay on the hills, although that could be only because my speed was otherwise restricted most of the time (in forest and/or on ice). Finished in 10th place, about 41 minutes behind the winner, Swampfox, and over 15 minutes back of 9th place... not too happy with that.

Saturday Dec 2

Event: Possum Trot Weekend

Orienteering 25:51 [4] 4 km (6:28 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (ret.)
O' Mt. O', Sprint on the Mt Oread map at the University of Kansas, in Lawrence. Great area for a sprint. Speed aside, I did pretty well, making one very small mistake on #6, and probably few hesitations or not-so-good route choices elsewhere. However, good foot speed seemed to be lacking... not sure whether I was just a tad slow or a fair bit slow. Falling on some stairs on the way to #7 didn't help either, butt was sore for a couple minutes, and perhaps I was a bit too cautious in the icy places afterwards?

Finished 2nd to Darius, by 1:15, in the under 40 category. 3rd overall, behind Thomas Carr as well, by 0:26.
Running warm up/down 15:00 [2] 2.5 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (ret.)
With Darius and Tim, mostly. Seemed to be heading downhill... felt pretty good during warmup, a bit slow during the race, then felt like crap afterwards. Felt okay when we went out on the permanent course though.
Orienteering 40:00 [2] 4 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (ret.)
Shawnee Mission Park Permanent Course with Darius. Not making much sense of the map in places, guess that was mainly because some trails and creeks were indistinct with the snow cover. Finding the markers (after getting to right area) was hard... they were rather small and nailed to trees, so could be hard to spot, especially if you're on the other side of the tree. Oh well, good to be out anyways, would have liked to go to a few more controls, but didn't have a lot of time.
