Monday Dec 31

Running 42:38 [4] 10.45 km (4:05 / km)
shoes: Saucony Grid Excursion TR 2
Around on the roads to the south side of the Down South area. -15°C, road conditions pretty much as good they get in the winter for all but the last mile or so. Only a couple vehicles had been down that section of road and hadn't packed down the little bit of fresh snow.
Running 1:20:00 [1] 13 km (6:09 / km)
shoes: Saucony Grid Excursion TR 2
Brief warmup and running back after hard run, going through the western swamp and timberland.
Running 11:50 [2] 2.45 km (4:50 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D old
Out for a few minutes with the dog.

Sunday Dec 30

Skiing 1:29:00 14.4 km (6:11 / km)

Friday Dec 28

shoes: Saucony Grid Excursion TR 2
To town and back.
Skiing 56:30 [1] 8.5 km (6:39 / km)
Long trail (32:30) and short trail (12:55). A little bit of new snow made it slower-going, and there was quite a bit of snowmobile/ATV damage.

Thursday Dec 27

Running 1:05:00 [1] 11 km (5:55 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D old
Park.

Wednesday Dec 26

Skiing 2:11:00 22.5 km (5:49 / km)
At Sandilands, Green-Black-Yellow loop (95 min), Purple loop (~17 min), and a bit extra of the Green (8 min) and Black (11 min) trails.
Running 30:40 [2] 6 km (5:07 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D old
Through the park and along the roads for a bit.

Tuesday Dec 25

Running 54:00 9 km (6:00 / km) +170m 5:29 / km
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D old
Around the park, and along the roads for a bit too. Ran the hill loop 7 times, avg 1:39. Had put some more shoe goo on my shoes to mend general wear & tear... will see how long the stuff can extend the life of these well-used shoes.

Monday Dec 24

Running 2:10:00 22 km (5:55 / km)
shoes: Saucony Grid Excursion TR 2
Down South, through the western swamp and around the trail loop to the west and back through timberland. Was able to follow snowmobile or ATV tracks most of the way. Ran with wet feet for all but the first 30 seconds... the ice on the lake is mushy on the surface in too many places. Feet were still warm enough despite the -15°C temperature. About halfway through the run, I went through the ice on a mucky puddle in a swampy area. Had my sweatpants on so it wasn't too bad, they soaked up the water and didn't cling to my legs. Was a bit weird running with the bottom part of my pants frozen stiff though. Had lots of ice and snow frozen on my shoes by the end. Needed the hairdryer to thaw out the laces so I could untie them and take my shoes off!
Skiing 52:00 8.5 km (6:07 / km)
Long trail (28:45) and short trail (11:45). Excellent (though not fast) conditions as the trails had been groomed less than 40 minutes before I went around.

Sunday Dec 23

Running 32:30 [1] 4.5 km (7:13 / km)
shoes: Saucony Grid Excursion TR 2
Short run in the park, mostly through deep snow.

Saturday Dec 22

Running 58:00 9 km (6:27 / km) +220m 5:45 / km
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D old
Around the park, through the snow. Ran the hill loop 10 times, averaging 1:57.
Running 40:48 [3] 9 km (4:32 / km)
shoes: Saucony Grid Excursion TR 2
Around the mile block SE of the lake. Snow and some ice on the roads. Uneven footing most of the way.

Friday Dec 21

Running 1:37:30 [2] 20.4 km (4:47 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D old
Road run. Slippery in places.
Skiing 36:45 6.5 km (5:39 / km)
Long trail, lap time 25:25.
Cycling (stationary) 20:00 [1] 7.9 km (2:32 / km)

Thursday Dec 20

Running 50:00 [1] 8 km (6:15 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D old
Around the park.
Skiing 48:00 [2] 8.5 km (5:39 / km)
Long trail (26:30) and short trail (10:30).

Wednesday Dec 19

Skiing 1:51:00 [1] 18.5 km (6:00 / km)
At Sandilands, Green trail (64:30) and part of the Red (46:30).

Monday Dec 17

Running 41:30 [2] 8.3 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D old
Down the lake to the roads, along the roads to the bridge over the river, back the same way. Finally got some stuff to mend my shoes (ref. Nov 25) earlier in the week... the shoe goo held them together fine for this run, will see how long it lasts.

Sunday Dec 16

Running 48:30 [1] 8 km (6:04 / km)
shoes: Saucony Grid Excursion TR 2
Around the park. Not good, to put it lightly, going four days without training for no good reason.
Skiing 55:00 8.5 km (6:28 / km)
Long trail (30:00) and short trail (11:50).

Tuesday Dec 11

Running intervals 20:00 [4] 5.25 km (3:49 / km)
shoes: Saucony Grid Excursion TR 2
5 × 1.05 km on roads, 2 min rest between. 3:56, 3:55, 3:56, 3:58, 4:00. Not too bad for the conditions I guess.
Running warm up/down 20:00 3.5 km (5:43 / km)
shoes: Saucony Grid Excursion TR 2
Might have gone for a longer jog afterwards had I not felt like crap after the last interval... had a snack too soon before heading out I think.

Monday Dec 10

Running 1:00:00 [2] 11 km (5:27 / km) +110m 5:12 / km
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D old
In the park. Did the hill loop 5 times, avg 1:46.
Skiing 41:20 6.5 km (6:22 / km)
Long trail, lap 29:45.
Cycling (stationary) 30:00 [1] 11.3 km (2:39 / km)
While studying. But when I got off the bike and left the workshop, I discovered that the world hadn't ended.

Sunday Dec 9

Running 2:00:00 [2] 22 km (5:27 / km)
shoes: Skechers Endorphin
Down South, through the western swamp, around the trails south of the swamp, back through timberland. Mixture of roads, trails with fairly hard-packed snow, and trails with no tracks.

Saturday Dec 8

Running 1:10:00 [1] 9.5 km (7:22 / km) +130m 6:54 / km
shoes: Skechers Endorphin
Around the park in the snow. Did the eastern hill loop 6 times, averaging 2:15. Found a golf ball -- makes it two found in the last three years or so while running in/near the park. Temperature was a pleasant -25°C (no wind).
Skiing 1:21:30 [1] 11.5 km (7:05 / km)
Around the long trail twice, lap times 33:30 and 36:00.
Cycling (stationary) 20:00 [1] 7.6 km (2:38 / km)

Friday Dec 7

Skiing 1:08:00 [1] 8.5 km (8:00 / km)
Around the long trail (lap time 36 min), with a side trip to goof around at the hill for a bit. The trails were groomed.
Cycling (stationary) 30:00 [1] 11.7 km (2:34 / km)

Thursday Dec 6

Skiing 50:00 [1] 6.5 km (7:42 / km)
Around the park, mostly through somewhat deep snow.
Running 40:30 [3] 9 km (4:30 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D old
Around the mile block SE of the lake, going across the lake on the way back.

Tuesday Dec 4

Running 30:00 [1] 5 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Adidas Swoop 2
In the park, in the snow. Wore my O-shoes to clean them off a bit, and wasn't very successful in that endeavour.

Sunday Dec 2

Orienteering 1:43:47 [4] 15.6 km (6:39 / km)
shoes: Adidas Swoop 2
Possum Trot XI at Shawnee Mission Park. Made up for my poor result last year. 3rd place this time, 7:39 behind Patrick, 4:30 behind Mikell, and 9:53 ahead of Tom Carr in 4th. Good navigation for the most part, good skip choices I think (15 & 25) and paced it pretty well. Must have had pretty good speed too, although I wasn't too sure about that while out there.

Started off in the lead after cutting SW to the road while pretty much everyone else went more directly to the road. Patrick passed me shortly after #2 but, somewhat to my surprise, I was able to keep within sight until #13. Mikell was up there with us too, mostly behind me up to #12. Felt tired and took it easy going up the hill to #13, and Patrick started to pull away and Mikell passed me. He too pulled away shortly after #14 when I slowed down to reattach my punch card to my shirt. Was in danger of losing it as one of the two pins had come off.

I was pretty much on my own the rest of the way. Managed okay on the hills in the northern part, although I did walk up the one between 18 and 19. Wasn't feeling great then but I was able to pick it up afterwards. Planned on skipping #33 for my second skip, but changed my plan shortly after leaving #24. Felt pretty good, but thought that the long climb out of #25 could wear me out, so I skipped #25. Messed up #26, didn't read the map well after cutting in from the road and was wandering around to the north for a bit. Pretty stupid and definitely the low point of my race, but only some little bobbles and a ~1:30 boom is pretty good for a long race. Mikell was approaching #29 as I left. Didn't see him again until #31. He was close behind and I tried to speed up a bit to stay ahead in case he didn't have a skip left. Not sure if that was best tactic for a head-to-head battle, but it didn't matter as Mikell had a skip left and beat me quite handily by leaving out #33.
Running warm up/down 13:00 [1] 2.5 km (5:12 / km)
shoes: Saucony Grid Excursion TR 2

Possum Trot - Splits

Saturday Dec 1

Event: Possum Trot Weekend

Orienteering 29:52 [4] 4.66 km (6:25 / km)
shoes: Adidas Swoop 2
Woodridge Middle. Didn't make many mistakes but the course was fairly easy so it wasn't a great run, but still good. Lost maybe 0:45 on #8... came out of the dark green SSE of the control, not SSW like I had planned, didn't realize this and headed east (didn't check compass) along the edge of the bush for a bit before realizing things weren't right. Made small bobbles (10-20s) on #7 (ended up at field to the south, rather than the one to the north), and #12 (drifted off course a bit in one of the fields). Felt like I had good speed in the beginning, but felt somewhat weak in the last 5 min or so. Came in 4th overall, 4:18 behind Patrick, 0:05 behind Justin Bakken and 0:04 behind Tom Carr.
Running warm up/down 24:00 4.4 km (5:27 / km)
shoes: Saucony Grid Excursion TR 2
