Orienteering 1:43:47 [4] 15.6 km (6:39 / km)
shoes: Adidas Swoop 2
Possum Trot XI at Shawnee Mission Park. Made up for my poor result last year. 3rd place this time, 7:39 behind Patrick, 4:30 behind Mikell, and 9:53 ahead of Tom Carr in 4th. Good navigation for the most part, good skip choices I think (15 & 25) and paced it pretty well. Must have had pretty good speed too, although I wasn't too sure about that while out there.

Started off in the lead after cutting SW to the road while pretty much everyone else went more directly to the road. Patrick passed me shortly after #2 but, somewhat to my surprise, I was able to keep within sight until #13. Mikell was up there with us too, mostly behind me up to #12. Felt tired and took it easy going up the hill to #13, and Patrick started to pull away and Mikell passed me. He too pulled away shortly after #14 when I slowed down to reattach my punch card to my shirt. Was in danger of losing it as one of the two pins had come off.

I was pretty much on my own the rest of the way. Managed okay on the hills in the northern part, although I did walk up the one between 18 and 19. Wasn't feeling great then but I was able to pick it up afterwards. Planned on skipping #33 for my second skip, but changed my plan shortly after leaving #24. Felt pretty good, but thought that the long climb out of #25 could wear me out, so I skipped #25. Messed up #26, didn't read the map well after cutting in from the road and was wandering around to the north for a bit. Pretty stupid and definitely the low point of my race, but only some little bobbles and a ~1:30 boom is pretty good for a long race. Mikell was approaching #29 as I left. Didn't see him again until #31. He was close behind and I tried to speed up a bit to stay ahead in case he didn't have a skip left. Not sure if that was best tactic for a head-to-head battle, but it didn't matter as Mikell had a skip left and beat me quite handily by leaving out #33.
Running warm up/down 13:00 [1] 2.5 km (5:12 / km)

Possum Trot - Splits

Saturday Dec 1

Event: Possum Trot Weekend

Orienteering 29:52 [4] 4.66 km (6:25 / km)
shoes: Adidas Swoop 2
Woodridge Middle. Didn't make many mistakes but the course was fairly easy so it wasn't a great run, but still good. Lost maybe 0:45 on #8... came out of the dark green SSE of the control, not SSW like I had planned, didn't realize this and headed east (didn't check compass) along the edge of the bush for a bit before realizing things weren't right. Made small bobbles (10-20s) on #7 (ended up at field to the south, rather than the one to the north), and #12 (drifted off course a bit in one of the fields). Felt like I had good speed in the beginning, but felt somewhat weak in the last 5 min or so. Came in 4th overall, 4:18 behind Patrick, 0:05 behind Justin Bakken and 0:04 behind Tom Carr.
Running warm up/down 24:00 4.4 km (5:27 / km)

Woodridge Park Long - Splits

Friday Nov 30

Running 12:00 [1] 2.2 km (5:27 / km)
shoes: Saucony Grid Excursion TR 2
After getting to Council Bluffs in the evening... dodging traffic, and not a dodging piece of rebar on the grass near some railway tracks (didn't see it).

Thursday Nov 29

Running 31:32 6.8 km (4:38 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D old
Around on the roads. 5.7 km at a medium pace then a few minutes cooldown. Put a few small pieces of duct tape on the bottoms of my shoes, and that held them together fine.
Cycling (stationary) 15:00 [1] 5.7 km (2:38 / km)

Tuesday Nov 27

Running intervals 14:53 [4] 3.9 km (3:49 / km)
shoes: Saucony Grid Excursion TR 2
In the park, through a couple inches of snow. 2 × 1 min, 3 × ~925 m, 2 × 1 min. Times for the 925s were 3:42, 3:33, 3:38. A bit cold out for the first time in a while... -16°C.
Running warm up/down 34:00 6.2 km (5:29 / km)
shoes: Saucony Grid Excursion TR 2
Cycling (stationary) 13:00 [1] 5 km (2:36 / km)
Same as last time, looked at the Shawnee map for a bit, then did 8-digit number multiplication (answer was correct this time).

Monday Nov 26

Cycling (stationary) 20:00 [1] 7.5 km (2:40 / km)
Looked at the Shawnee map for a bit, planning routes for some random legs, jotted down some notes about the terrain, then for some reason multipled two eight-digit numbers (and my answer was off by 100 trillion).
