Wednesday Aug 20

Running (HS Treadmill) 55:05 [3] 6.0 mi (9:10 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Trigon 4
Run on the treadmill while watching the olympics. Made me run faster and bump into the bar a couple of times. Those guys are fast.

Strength Training (WAC) 1:00:00 [3]
Upper body. Also threw in some squats and a new exercise I'll call T-bar twists that RVG showed me. I was surprised the squats did not really hit the sore part of my quad from the climb. Maybe lunges might be a better strength training exercise for climbing elevation.
Strength Training (WAC - AB LAB) 30:00 [3]
Core focused group workout.

Saturday Aug 16

Climbing (The Brothers) 11:00:00 16.0 mi (41:15 / mi) +1951m 18:35 / km
shoes: Salomon XA Pro XCR #1
Hike up to Lena Lake, through the Valley of Silent Men to the Brothers. 6 miles in and the well marked trail ends and the tough stuff begins. Hike up through a recent burn, steep dry river beds, boulders, tons of scree, and a small ice/snow field that looked completely hollow underneath. I stopped about 400ft from the top as my legs were screaming and I didnt want to take on the increasingly technical climb in that condition. I was still able to enjoy pretty incredible views reaching all the way out over the Hood Canal and the Sound to a haze covered Seattle.

Hike out was tough on the already tired legs. I was just dripping sweat on the boulders on the way down. Drank tons of water. Treated the stuff lower down with iodine but not the fast flowing melt higher up. I was just too impatient to get that cold water in me. Hopefully won't pay a price for that.
We stopped to get a coke at a minimart/subway with an ambulance parked outside. Inside RVG ran into the medics running an IV to a climber we had seen near the top that had been complaining of being low on water. Apparently he had passed out in his meatball sandwhich from dehydration.
