Orienteering 1:00:00 [2] 4.5 km (13:20 / km) +180m 11:07 / km
shoes: Jalas Black FLX #2

U-Max control set out. Only 2 ppl so set things up for a re-run. Additional time tying ribbons etc. Think I've got a nice middle distance course for next time with two cutoffs for the less expd. Great place, with college/intermediate over the road crying out for a sprint map. What say a two-race event, campus plus bush.

Saturday Dec 30, 2017 #

Running race 26:11 [4] 5.0 km (5:14 / km)
shoes: Vasque Grand Traverse

Lower Hutt parkrun. Perfect conditions. Splits 5.17, 5.12, 5.13, 5.20, 5.09. Av cadence 182 so this is getting bedded in. Av HR 153/Max 173 so this is bizarre as watch strap was tight.

Mapping 2:09:00 [1] 10.6 km (12:10 / km) +370m 10:22 / km
shoes: Specialised #2

Mapping by bike Old Coach Road into Belmont Regional Park. Down Electric Ave and back up 2 Degrees. Fairly relaxed excursion. Great day.

Friday Dec 29, 2017 #

Running 30:27 [2] 4.0 km (7:37 / km) +140m 6:29 / km
shoes: Vasque Grand Traverse

Home block. Nice evg. Splits 7.59, 6.10, 8.25, 7.36, 0.17 (last .01)

Mapping 2:42:00 [1] 6.9 km (23:29 / km)
shoes: Specialised #2

More mapping at Wainui Trail Park. Poss half the distance was on bike tho I walked the bike where necessary to see into the bush properly. The other half off track searching for passable zones..

Wednesday Dec 27, 2017 #

Mapping 4:35:00 [1] 6.5 km (42:18 / km)
shoes: Bullers

Wainui Trail Park. In from Kaponga St and concentrated on Spoon Hill. Have identified a valley that looks like a connection down to the wetland, and Labyrinth Return has a bit more to do. That's within easy reach of the bottom, prob not worth exploring the high bits for foot-o. Should look at Wainui College and Intermediate tho.

Sunday Dec 24, 2017 #

Running 1:22:20 [3] 10.2 km (8:04 / km) +260m 7:10 / km
shoes: Vasque Grand Traverse

Two bridges and hill tracks inc BT - but in reverse. Poss a tad easier than a 3, maybe 2.75. Overcast, quite humid, lots of sweat. Sleepy-tired afterwards. Splits 8.22, 7.26, 7.28, 7.23, 7.47, 9.16, 8.18, 8.44, 8.31, 7.52, 1.13 (0.14km).

Saturday Dec 23, 2017 #

Running race 25:42 [4] 5.0 km (5:08 / km)
shoes: Vasque Grand Traverse

Lower Hutt Parkrun. the system failed to record me tho they read my barcodes, but have taken 1sec off my watch time. Splits 5.12, 5.11, 5.04, 5.16, 5.00. Cadence 184 (1st time over 180?) Good conditions, large crowd (266) Compared to last good time, almost same over 1st 3km, fell back over kms 4 and 5.

Edit - spoke to Parkrun organiser and claimed one of the "unknown" slots that was where I thought I should be. Turned out to be 1sec faster than I had assumed. Two days later, did volunteer duty on Xmas Day - lead+tail bike, which doesn't count for training as 10km on the flat is nothing. A small exertion on the way back when the leader got too close - hard to maintain station without a rear-view mirror. It was into the wind and right where you climb onto the stop-bank too, so 15sec of exertion!

Running 1:01:33 [3] 8.1 km (7:36 / km) +140m 7:00 / km
shoes: Vasque Grand Traverse

Two bridges from home without the hill tracks. Nice easy run, warm tho gusty wind. Did the Onehuka Rd 217 steps instead of lower Tirohanga Rd. But watch had turned itself off so didn't get a HR there:-((

Biking 14:30 [2] 1.7 km (8:32 / km) +140m 6:02 / km

Orienteering 48:29 [3] 6.0 km (8:05 / km)
shoes: Vasque Mindbender

U-Max Hutt Riverbank. Distance estd as GPS went crazy in Speedys Stream tunnel, said 7.1 but the trace went way off. The two bridges are 2.4km apart so guessing 5 plus 1km for the course going tro and fro. Quite hot. Still feeling (sleepy) tired after week mapping.

Saturday Dec 16, 2017 #

Running 32:37 [3] 5.0 km (6:31 / km)
shoes: Vasque Grand Traverse

Lower Hutt Parkrun. Feeling tired (sleepy), see prev week. Couple of very late nights too.

Mapping 6:01:00 [1] 12.7 km (28:26 / km)
shoes: Bullers

Wither Hills. Small cct round Rifle Range entrance; longer trip to top of Quail Stream.

Thursday Dec 14, 2017 #

Mapping 7:33:00 [1] 13.0 km (34:51 / km)
shoes: Bullers

Wither Hills. Sutherlands Stream, plus the Mt Vernon loop via the burnt-out conservation block. Remember mapping it when clad in manuka. Now just waist-high grass, some gaunt remnants of the larger trees, and patches of gorse and bracken. Orienteering value off-track is zilch, at least in the farmed areas you can swing your feet.

Garmin 60CSX worked well. In terms of accuracy, consumer-level GPSs haven't moved much in a decade. Could say the same about my Bullers - rubber ankle gumboots. Think the stiffness delivers more comfort after a day on the go, than a softer shoe, and the grip is passable. And of course dry feet and a built-in "crossable marsh" indicator.

Wednesday Dec 13, 2017 #

Mapping 9:16:00 [1] 12.6 km (44:08 / km)
shoes: Bullers

Wither Hills. Almost a wasted day. A struggle thru 3 thick steep blocks, only one of which has any real potential. After 8 hours something, the promised downpour came, and I carried on as I was in the thick of it. When I came to download the Garmin 64S, "do not recognise USB device". What's more it wouldn't even start up on its own. Water in all the sockets of course, that silly little plug that is supposed to cover the mini-USB socket has to be wide open in order to plug in the external aerial. No action next morning either. Used old faithful 60CSX instead. HOWEVER on returning from next day's outing, the 64S disgorged its contents. Won't have to repeat the mapping. May not have to replace the 64S. Although its under a cloud.

Mapping 10:09:00 [1] 14.4 km (42:18 / km)
shoes: Bullers

Wither Hills - finished MTB Park and started a couple of blocks up Quail Stream. High 20's I think. Seems very slow but more off-track than yestday.

Monday Dec 11, 2017 #

Mapping 10:30:00 [1] 19.0 km (33:09 / km)
shoes: Vasque Mindbender

Mapping in MTB Park at Blenheim. Temp in 30s I'm sure. Still 20 at 10pm. Was able to keep mostly in shade tho eyesight adjusted to bright sun was not too good in the shade. Shud be a little cooler for rest of the week. Shoes were Bullers for 1st 3 hrs then switched. Mindbenders more comfy but they let the spiky grass seeds thru. Significant climb not recorded.

Sunday Dec 10, 2017 #
