Mapping 7:33:00 [1] 13.0 km (34:51 / km)
shoes: Bullers

Wither Hills. Sutherlands Stream, plus the Mt Vernon loop via the burnt-out conservation block. Remember mapping it when clad in manuka. Now just waist-high grass, some gaunt remnants of the larger trees, and patches of gorse and bracken. Orienteering value off-track is zilch, at least in the farmed areas you can swing your feet.

Garmin 60CSX worked well. In terms of accuracy, consumer-level GPSs haven't moved much in a decade. Could say the same about my Bullers - rubber ankle gumboots. Think the stiffness delivers more comfort after a day on the go, than a softer shoe, and the grip is passable. And of course dry feet and a built-in "crossable marsh" indicator.

Mapping 9:16:00 [1] 12.6 km (44:08 / km)
shoes: Bullers

Wither Hills. Almost a wasted day. A struggle thru 3 thick steep blocks, only one of which has any real potential. After 8 hours something, the promised downpour came, and I carried on as I was in the thick of it. When I came to download the Garmin 64S, "do not recognise USB device". What's more it wouldn't even start up on its own. Water in all the sockets of course, that silly little plug that is supposed to cover the mini-USB socket has to be wide open in order to plug in the external aerial. No action next morning either. Used old faithful 60CSX instead. HOWEVER on returning from next day's outing, the 64S disgorged its contents. Won't have to repeat the mapping. May not have to replace the 64S. Although its under a cloud.

Mapping 10:09:00 [1] 14.4 km (42:18 / km)
shoes: Bullers

Wither Hills - finished MTB Park and started a couple of blocks up Quail Stream. High 20's I think. Seems very slow but more off-track than yestday.

Mapping 10:30:00 [1] 19.0 km (33:09 / km)
shoes: Vasque Mindbender

Mapping in MTB Park at Blenheim. Temp in 30s I'm sure. Still 20 at 10pm. Was able to keep mostly in shade tho eyesight adjusted to bright sun was not too good in the shade. Shud be a little cooler for rest of the week. Shoes were Bullers for 1st 3 hrs then switched. Mindbenders more comfy but they let the spiky grass seeds thru. Significant climb not recorded.
