Sub-40! Thanks Eric for pacing for me!

3rd Masters, 6th overall.

http://www.fleetfeetstlouis.com/racetiming/results...

Race was at St. Louis Mills Mall. 2 5K loops. Probably about as flat as it gets without being on a track. However, that also means there wasn't much to get the way if the forecasted winds of 10-16mph with 25mph gusts actually materialized.

Despite a fairly strong wind prior to the race, conditions at race start were just about perfect: cool (48F-ish), sunny, light breeze.

During the warmup I noticed that my GPS wasn't catching the satellites and my HR strap wasn't transmitting. Great timing for the battery to die.

Race clothing plans were shorts and Carol's Team jersey. After warmup, went back to the car to make a quick clothing change, adding a long sleeve top under my Carol's Team jersey. Put the GPS unit on top of the car hoping for satellite pick-up and forgot it there. Remembered while I was standing at the start line. Would have to run with no HR data and no pace data.

At the start pulled in behind Eric and stayed there for the first 5K. Completed the lap in 19:26 so was in good shape for the sub-40 goal. But, I wasn't feeling nearly as strong as I did at the Go St. Louis
10K two weeks ago so I was a bit worried. Between mile 2 and 3, I actually thought I might get sick for a few minutes.

Going around the sharp u-turn to start the 2nd 5K, I slowed down a bit and Eric pulled 3 or 4 seconds ahead of me and I wasn't able to close the gap.

Gap widened to about 13 seconds over the next mile where there was a cul-de-sac u-turn. Eric shouted some encouragement and I closed the gap down to about 7 or 8 seconds but that was all I could do.

Calculation at mile 5 had me across in under 40 with time to spare as long as I could keep the pace.

Gap widened back to about 15 seconds until the final turn for last mile. I was definitely running out of gas. Heard footsteps behind me but couldn't do anything but try to hang on.

Hadn't noticed the wind up to this point, but that last turn took us out of what little protection there was and into a crosswind. At about 300m from the finish the course angled just a bit so it was now more of a head wind. That hurt. Got passed by another guy (in my age group) with about 200m to go. And then it was over.
