Course setting and control picking for sprint #2. Back to the drawing board for this course. Once I got out on the course, I decided I didn't like what I'd done on paper. But scouting around and looking at the map I think I've found an alternative with some interesting route choices.....

| Mark control locations on the west side of the park.
75F and humid, rain threatening.... No FDF's but donated a pint to the local mosquito population. There's a lot heavy veg and plenty of PI in the woods, but there are clean (well, mostly clean) routes to all the controls. Thank god I took my gaitors with me today. Have to remember bug spray tomorrow and Sat. Have 2 sprint courses planned. 1.75K for the first. 2.05K for the second. Combining the 2 courses + 6 additional controls for a foot/bike score-o. Runners on the first sprint will have to deal with a fair amount of vegetation. Be interesting to see what the winning time is. Back to the park tomorrow to locate the remaining 7 controls and to hang the bags.

Haven't gotten permission from the Oakville/Melville school district to use the middle school parking lot as a start/finish point for the o-meet this weekend. Spent a couple hours re-planning the courses instead of working out.

| No radios blaring until about 10 this morning, so got a nice night of sleep. In bed at 11, up at 8.
'Rest day' is a misnomer. A 'non-workout' day is more like it. Pack up the campsite, drive home, unpack. Of course, the only real rain of the weekend fell as we were unpacking... a real downpour too. We've only been able to do it once, but the best time to go camping is between the weekends. When we departed, there were only a few occupied sites and only 3 or 4 reserved. With all the 'camping' food I ate this weekend I wasn't expecting to have lost a pound....

| Combined control picking with an old course.
Had to do some creative nav to avoid some people out shooting in the woods near Hawn Park Road. Never saw them, but didn't waste any time putting a ridge between us. Temp was probably low 80's, but the humidity was really high. Had trouble keeping the sweat out of my eyes. There were a lot of ticks near the campground and on the hiking trails near the creek, but the woods weren't that bad. I added several hundred meters to my run cuz I wimped out and went around the big field instead of across. The new grass was mid-thigh to waist high and there was plenty left from last year. Didn't want to add chigger bites to the PI and tick bites that I already had. Only 1 FDF encounter. Got him with the map! Surprised a pair of turtles that chose the middle of the trail for a mid-day 'encounter'. Also came within 20 meters of a larger, brown furry animal that I didn't get a good look at. Maybe a coyote.

| Hiking with Laura & Benjamin at Hawn/Pickle Springs Natural Area.
If you are in the area and have never been here, you should go! It's a beautiful 2 mile hike. Some really cool rock formations. I didn't know we had terrain like that in Missouri. Spring or Fall, following some rain would be the best time.
