| Travel day.
A little worried about the weight. The 160 included some pretty solid meals on Thursday. Hadn't really intended for it to be that low. Left home about 8:30AM. Instead of having Matt drive over from Columbia to get me, I had my mom drive me over to his place. I took about 2 steps out of the car and it started raining. We loaded all the gear to his van and we were on the road by 9:30. I'm always surprised by how much gear I have. But looking back on the race, aside from extra clothes, there wasn't much else that I didn't use. Bike Cooler Pre-race bag Post-race bag Chair (for use before and after the race and for changing shoes and socks during the race) Sleeping bag + pillow for post-race Small plastic bin for loose gear Grocery bag of non-cooler food Backpack - pre-packed with required gear. 3 gal's water tarps card-table straight edges extra clothes for race - not sure of weather so had a variety shoes - 2 pairs trekking - 2 pairs bike. one bike pair was new and didn't really intend to use them, but figured if there was a short bike at the end or something, I'd try 'em out. Rained off and on pretty much the whole way across IL and IN. Not a good start, but race day was predicted to be sunny and 70F. Thankfully, the rain stopped just before we got to Versailles. Arrived in Versailles (pronounced Ver-sails) about 4:00. Took a drive by the Versailles water tower to see if it was rigged for climbing: it was. Checked into the luxurious Blue-Moon Motel and then headed to the park. It's a classic 1940's small town motel complete with pink tile in the shower stall. About 10 rooms in a single crescent shaped building right behind the owners house. Not too many people at race HQ yet so we had our choice of spots for the TA. Set up the TA: Matt's 10x10 awning overhead and tarps for walls. Decided to leave most of the gear in the car in case it rained more overnight. Took about 45 minutes. Ropes refresher course at 6PM. They made lots of noise about a zip line. Pre-race meal at 7. 3 types of lasagna, including veggie. Very good, actually; a first for a pre-race meal, in my experience. Pre-race meeting at 7:30. Not much info, not as many dumb questions as usual. Over by 8:00. Maps to be handed out in the morning. I like that because then you don't have to worry about plotting and route planning cutting into sleep time. Head back to hotel. Stop at CVS to check out their ice cream selection. A pint of B&J Cherries Garcia hit the spot very nicely. Some final gear prep, clothing selection, shower, alarm set for 4AM: ready for bed and it's only 10 oclock! That's the earliest I've gotted to bed prior to a race.

| Busy day at work...
Came home a little early and finished packing stuff for race. Put it all in the car and went to bed around 10. Stayed up reading until 11:30 - Citizen Soldiers by Stephen Ambrose. Great read, but should have just turned the light out, but needed to unwind from race prep.

| I woke up at 5:45 this morning for no good reason.... had set the alarm for 7. Stayed in bed for a bit but got up after the earthquake. Epicenter was only about 8K from our house. Heard it 2 or 3 seconds before the house started shaking. Reminded me of the CA days...
At target race weight now. 10 lbs lighter than last year for Mission. Interesting how quickly the weight comes down IF you don't stuff yourself with a bunch of unneeded calories AND you workout in the morning before eating breakfast....

| Walking (indoor laps) 38:00 [1] 2.4 km (15:50 / km) +44m 14:30 / km | ||
| A lap is worth about 600m.
I did 4 laps at a decent pace, fast enough to work up more of a sweat than I'd planned. 11 flights of stairs. Across the walkway and back is 260m. A loop thru the 1400 blg on the south side of the walkway is 110m. There are 3 floors easily accessible via an open staircase = 330m. 2 flights of stairs + landings is good for an easy 10m. Total is 600m. Back to my desk is about another 200m + 3 more flghts of stairs.
