Cycling (Trail) 2:15:00 [3]
slept:8.5 shoes: Cake 2 DLX
Palmer Park in CO Springs.

This would be a GREAT park to have in your backyard! Awesome MTBing and trail running. A lot of trail features and biking challenges that we just don't have in MO. But it's a tough place to visit for just a couple of hours of riding, mostly because there are so many trails and very few markers. I spent a lot of time looking at the map.

MTBR recommended that visitors purchase a map from a LBS, which I did and was glad for it. The map shows the rough placement of the main trail network, but not the secondary trails. And it shows the difficulty of the trails.

Three types of trails: beginner, intermed., and advanced.

At my skill level, I was stuck between the intermed and advanced.

The beginner trails are just that.
The intermediate trails didn't seem much harder than the beginner, but I only road a couple of sections of intermediate.
The section of advanced trail that I tried was way out of my league. Taken individually, I wouldn't have had any problem clearing most of the stuff I saw, but string them together with lots of loose soil, sand, and hair pin turns.... there just wasn't any room for hesitation or lack of confidence without the risk of a serious crash. Not know what's around the next blind corner doesn't help. Running the trails would be a good way to learn them.

I would have liked to have found more advanced intermediate or lower-end advanced trails to work on some skills.

Oddity of the day: A naked guy riding an electric scooter through the park. 60 years old give or take. Didn't appear to be wearing a stitch, just a fanny pack on his lap.

Walking 1:20:00 [1]
slept:7.5 shoes: Teva
Walking around Colorado College campus.
Cycling (Road & Trail) 2:16:00 [3] 30 km (4:32 / km)
shoes: Cake 2 DLX
14 k on the road (40ish minutes), 16 k on the trail.

Ute Valley Park. Fun trail with a good mix of stuff: loose powdery soil, sand, bare rock, loose rock, drop-offs. Rode 2 loops clockwise from the trailhead, 1 loop counter-clockwise. Some fast downhills.

Nice day if a bit warm, 90F+. Clouds provided some relief on the last loop. Could definitely feel the altitude on the climbs. And the dry air. Consumed almost 3 liters of water. Throat feels dry tonight.

Saw something new on the trail: 6 or 7 guys riding MTB unicycles!!! On the trail.
Note

Found a great Thai place for dinner. Then went in search of ice cream. Not many ice cream shops in Co Springs. Finally found a homemade shop, Josh and Johns, and got a HUGE serving of Choc Fudge Brownie and Strawberry in a waffle cone.

Cycling 1:35:00 [4] 34 km (2:48 / km)
slept:6.0 shoes: Cake 2 DLX
Had planned on some off-road riding last night, but severe t-storms forced a modification to the ittenerary.... Got up early and did a road ride in the country-side around Northfield. Needed to be back to the hotel by 8:15, so had to push a bit. Hotel desk clerk printed out a google map for me otherwise the ride wouldn't have been possible. And while she was right about the hilly section, she was wrong about the hilly section being paved. 4 or 5 brutish grunts on gravel.

Legs were pretty toasted at the end. All-in-all a very pleasant ride through some very pleasant forest and farm land. Although, I was viciously attacked by FDFs, or maybe they were FBFs, on one of the climbs.
Walking 1:05:00 [1]
shoes: Teva
Walking tour of St. Olaf. Legs complained about stairs early on but got better as we went on.
Note
Drove from Northfield, MN to Wall, SD today. It's 400ish miles from the MN border to Wall. Interestingly, there were signs for a tourist trap in Wall, called Wall Drug, starting at the border and then about every 3-5 miles thereafter. We made a game out of trying to take a picture of each sign as we passed it at 85 mph. Sad, but there's not much else to do while driving across SD.

We'll drive thru the Bad Lands tomorrow and pay a visit to Rushmore on the way to Colo Springs.

Walking 1:10:00 [1]
Tour of the Carleton campus....

Sunday Jul 6

Note
slept:8.5 (injured) (rest day)
Drove to Northfield, MN today.

Had planned to leave earlier but I was just too tired to finish packing last night so slept til 7:30, finished packing and left about noon.

Threaded through some big t-storms in northern Iowa. Saw lots of really cool lightning, missed the heavy rain which was good.

Saw some disappointing human behavior.... young child in the gas station mini-mart wants a piece of candy, mom says no, kid starts crying. Mom gets mad, smacks the kid a couple times, kid cries more, mom starts yelling at the kid to stop crying, yells at kid all the way out to the car.... why do people think it's acceptable to treat their kids that way?
