Pre-race meeting @ 7PM:
5 maps with bike and paddle coords pre-plotted. Need to plot the trekking sections. Start:
Midnight start in Illinois City to TA1 at the boat ramp in Loud Thunder Forest Preserve.
| Paddling race (Raft) 2:45:00 [4] | ||
| The first paddling section was a 9K paddle on the Andalusia Slough of the Mississippi River using inflatable rafts. We had a Coleman with a 650 lb max rating that worked really well. Most other teams had smaller 2 person or 1 person boats that seemed less suited to the task. I knealt in the front, Matt sat/knealt in various positions in the back.
CP's were all hung in trees accessible without having to leave the raft. Water was pretty nasty looking with flourescent green algae. Noticed that a number of teams either concealed their glowsticks or didn't use them. TA - About 9 minutes to pump up the raft, change shoes, put gear in dry bags, get to the water. We didn't know there were 2 boat ramps into the water. The ramp closest to us (our TA area) led straight into a mud pit whereas the other went right into open water. We wasted about 5 minutes in the mud pit where we had to walk through shin/knee deep mud to water deep enough to float the raft. I lost both shoes multiple times in the muck. Should be a photo by the race photographer. Stuck in the mud (yes, that's me):
CP2 - 31:11 Downstream about 1.5K from the put in. Located at the inlet of a small channel through the interior of Adalusia Island. The mud put us behind a bunch of teams, but a superior boat and the practice at Castlewood paid off and we passed 6 or 7 teams on the way to CP2. CP3 - 17:26 Maybe 1.25K up stream at opposite end of channel through the island. Passed a few more teams. CP4 - 1:07 4K up the slough and past a few more teams. This was a long stretch. Started seeing boats coming back about 20 minutes before we got to the control. TA2/CP5 - 48:17 3.25K back down the slough to the TA. Passed a couple more teams. Raft Finish:
Almost 3 hours kneeling in the bottom of a raft is not a good thing! I could barely walk after getting out of the boat. Took about 5 minutes to limber up again. I've got bruises on the lower parts of both patellas.
| Orienteering race 6:01:00 [3] 14 km (25:47 / km) | ||
TA 2 - 15:20 I was completely soaked after the rafting and it was getting cool out. At the TA I started shivering uncontrollably so a complete change of clothes was required. Changed clothes, refilled fluids and fuel, then back out on the course.
CP6 - 9:45 We quickly got our first taste of the vegetation and fallen trees in the forest. Plenty of stinging nettles and small saplings. Lots of fallen and broken trees from an August 2008 storm that produced straightline winds in excess of 110 MPH. Well, the race director said the woods would be "challenging". CP7 - 31:43 - Maybe the easiest control to find on this section. CP8 - 25:28 - 7 minutes worth of Nav error. Map showed trail leading to the control. Actual trail turned up hill where expected but didn't turn back. Used the hillside to contour over to the control. CP9 - 28:23 - A long push thru lots of fallen trees to reach the road, then an easy traverse of a ridge right to the cp. CP10 - 42:07 - CP11 - 35:23 CP12 - 41:01 CP13 - 25:55 CP14 - 29:44 CP15 - 42:00 CP16 - 25:40 CP17/TA3 - 19:52
| Paddling race (Canoe) 1:55:00 [4] 11 km (10:27 / km) | ||
|
TA3 42:35 - Lound Thunder Boat Ramp. Arrived at about 11:30 AM. A long TA... change clothes, foot repair. CP18 - 36:22 - 3.5K Down stream to small island. CP19 - 39:43 - Past the duck blinds at end of Adalusia Island and across the main channel of the Mississippi to Goose Island. CP20/TA4 - 39:54 upstream in the main channel to the boat ramp at conservation area on the Iowa side of the river.
| Orienteering race 5:11:00 [3] 14 km (22:13 / km) | ||
| shoes: Vasque Blur | ||
TA4 - 6:12 - Get canoe out of water to parking spot. Get packs out of dry bags, leave some food and gear in canoe.
CP 21 - Probably the easiest of all the trekking controls. Hung on a gate near the road. From TA, could have gone either way on the road, map measuring tool had less than 100M diff in the distance. We went west then north. CP 22 - Another easy one. Just follow the creek. Thick veg. CP 23 - A lot of teams had trouble finding this one. It was a fair distance down the creek and required teams to stay in contact with the map. Location was in a reentrant near the park boundary. An unmapped fence just short of the control reentrant contributed to the confusion. We stayed in contact with the map and follow the features right to the control. A number of teams followed. Several controls were unfairly hung (hidden), this was one of them. Placement was on the far side of a large fallen tree, hidden from the only logical attack point. CP 24 - in a miniature canyon. Who'd have thought in eastern Iowa? On the way (not us):
Control location (not us):
CP 25 - Not sure this one was hung correctly. Got us inside the circle and then we had to hunt. Was just about to go back and relocate when Matt spotted the flag. CP 26 - Went back towards 24 and took a stairway up and out of the reentrant. Didn't keep good contact with the map here so lost a few minutes. CP 27 - This one was hung, no, laying on the floor of a cave. The cave entrance was up a series of ledges, the last being about 5.5 feet high. You couldn't see the flag until you were actually inside the cave. This wasn't that much of a problem until you had a bunch of racers that were following us trying to climb up the ledges and into the small opening at the same time. WTF? Probably cost us all 5 minutes jostling around and squeezing past people going up on the climb down. CP 28 - Another easy one, just a climb. CP 29 - I plotted this one on the wrong side of the creek. A millimeter can make a bike difference on a feature this small. I'll recheck the plot at some point. Anyway, bad route choice + bad plot = 15-20 minutes lost. Fortunately, I saw the flag from the other side of the creek while standing at the location I plotted. CP 30 Tyrolean Traverse - There was a bridge a little to the south and east from where we came out of the woods that would have saved us 5 minutes if I'd noticed it on the map, but instead we went north and then east. There was an outdoor wedding in progress when we arrived at the CP. An AR first in my experience. Traverse (not us):
CP 31/TA5 - Back down the road...
| Paddling (Canoe) 1:35:00 [4] 8.5 km (11:11 / km) | ||
| TA5

| Cycling race 3:42:00 [4] | ||

| TA6 - 32:00 - Arrived about 7:20 PM. Carry canoe to trailers, change clothes and shoes, reload fluids and food, fix feet. Put on lights. While in the TA we were told that we were being rerouted to eliminate the last treking section so we'd make it back to the Finish before midnight. Also told that if we didn't leave before the 8PM cutoff, we'd have to go straight back to the finish and not get any of the biking controls. So we left the TA and repacked the maps enroute to the first bike control.
CP 34 - easy CP 35 - easy CP 36 - in the town of Andalusia CP 37 - entrance to the ski area. Huge hill out of Andalusia. Made it up without walking. CP 38 - bottom of a big hill at a ski area. CP 39 - skipped - needed about another 40 minutes to get 39 and 40. CP 40 - skipped CP 41 - 44 Missed time cutoff, so skipped these. Nasty trekking section that was supposed to be a biking section. Reportedly, the trails were all overgrown from disuse and lots of trees down. Don't feel like I missed much. CP 45/FINISH

| Race update: I've got a 2 person coed team that wants to race as a 3 P coed. Or Matt might be able to race. He's going to drive up with me and make the call tomorrow. Either way, I'm racing. :)
Even though it's raining buckets now, reminiscent of the Berryman race 3 years ago when the moisture from Katrina made it to Missouri, the weather is supposed to be ideal this weekend. 74/55 Friday 75/58 Saturday. RD promises that we'll be getting very wet at night. Not sure what to wear for a swim in the Mighty Miss with temps in the 50's. Should be fun.

| Car problems.... Dropped off car for service and rode bike home.
I don't think the temp was all that high 89 or 90?, but it sure felt hot. Some cloud cover and a breeze helped towards the end. Front brake rotor started rubbing about half way home. Looks like one of the pistons isn't retracting all the way, again. LBS doesn't know if they'll be able to work on it before the race, but I'm taking it in tomorrow, if the car is ready....

Castlewood. Stinging Nettle, Love, back part of Grotpeter, back up cardiac by-pass, roller coaster + some more. Great ride but I was sweating buckets. High humidity. Dew on grass not even beginning to dry after 2 hours of direct sun. Nice soak in the creek after the ride.

45:00 on Grants Trail. Didn't get out until 11. By 1 it felt really hot... decided to cut the ride a little short. Heel felt pretty good yesterday but it was on fire when I woke up this morning.
