Orienteering race 12:30 intensity: (14 @0) + (9 @1) + (4 @2) + (26 @3) + (7:25 @4) + (4:12 @5) 1.21 mi (10:20 / mi) +39m 9:23 / mi
ahr:152 max:163 8c shoes: OROC 340 V2

Prologue at Hawn. 1.5k, 1:5000, 2.5m contours.

Finished just behind Jeff Ryan.
Not especially clean.
Bobbled #2.
Hesitated on the way to 3.
Bad route to #6.

Orienteering race 56:01 intensity: (4:07 @2) + (7:01 @3) + (26:16 @4) + (18:37 @5) 3.95 mi (14:11 / mi) +212m 12:09 / mi

Chase at Hawn. 4.3k, 1:10000, 5m contour, 105m climb.

Started 15s behind Jeff Ryan, and just ahead of Bryan N. All arrived at 1 about the same time but I spotted it first and then 180'd out of the control....

Pack run to #2 and we all stopped short. I thought we were short but went with the crowd. Decided quickly where we were and took off over the next spur. Bryan got to 2 first and headed for 3 but I didn't see him for the rest of the run.

Jeff, Nikolay, and running together to 3. I got there first.

#4 route choice, trail slightly around or redline 300ish m. J and N trail. I redline. Again get there first, and again 180'd out of control.

I took a diff route to 5 than J and N. 350 - 400 m along a trashy hillside with fairly bland feature low and lots of rock high. I went high, they went low. I arrived at control alone but took long enough that I figured J and N were long gone.

6 and 7 short uneventful legs.

8 in a small re-entrant on another trashy hillside. Tough to find. Chose a bad route and had no real attack point. after circling a bit, dropped back to creek to relocate and then found the control on the first try. No sign of J or N (turns out N was running green and the courses had diverged). Tim G caught me here.

9 and 10 were uneventful. but on the way out of 10 i found a ruined fence the hard way.

11 was 300m up a hill to a saddle. ran right by the control. got back to it just as Tim and Jeff R arrived. Surprise! But no sign of Bryan. Was curious about Nikolay.

12 was another short leg but i misread the map and headed off in the wrong direction. Recovered but now behind Jeff and Tim.

Which actually may have worked to my advantage. 12 - 13 was a 700ish meter leg with a route choice: redline up and over a big ass, 10 contour hill, or 90 degrees off redline for 200m to catch a trail on the farside of the hill that led almost directly to the control. I figured I couldn't beat J up the hill so when he and Tim both headed redline, I took the around route. Again arrived at control alone so no idea if they're ahead or behind.

Alone to 14 and to finish. No Jeff, no Tim, and no Bryan. So even with a sloppy run I got first on red. Jeff was a minute behind and said the hill was brutal. Tim detoured on a game trail going up the hill so was a few minutes behind Jeff.

Fun courses and a fun format on a beautiful day in the woods!

Note

Got up from the couch and both legs cramped. Both thighs, quads, and left shin. Lasted a really long time. I especially hate thigh cramps cuz there does not seem to be a good position to relieve them.

Legs felt ok for the first bit but totally died at about mile 3. Kind of cold out too. 46F with a breeze.

Quads were sore by 5PM. Tempo run caught up with me I guess.
