Orienteering race (sprint) 20:25 [5] ** 4.1 km (4:59 / km)
spiked:18/20c shoes: Altra Lone Peak 1.5

Garmin didn't start. Or I pressed the button 2x.

Very much a runners course with the first 12 controls in the town of Arnprior and the final 9 controls tightly packed in and around the park (arena). Given the length, endurance was a factor. 4.1k should be close to actual running distance, not red line, per IOF rules.

I had 1 - #1 split, 1 - #3 split, and 3 - #4 splits. But then I had some ugly splits too...

Finished 17th of 42. Maybe 45-60 seconds of errors and hesitations. A bit disappointing, but a decent run.

DQ'd myself on the first control. Misread the clue sheet. Was expecting control on the outside corner of fence (the START control was the outside corner), #1 was on the inside corner. SI Unit was reachable over the fence - so I did. Realized that was a DQ when I finished. Self-reported but informally protested at the same time on the grounds that a) it should not have been reachable over the fence AND b) other runners may have done the same thing. The DQ was reversed because they agreed with reasons. Yea!

20-25 seconds (HUGE) lost on #2. It was in plain view below a wall in front of a fence, but I was expecting it to be behind the fence. Didn't see it as I ran right by and over it.

5 seconds on #11 - trouble seeing the control among a bunch of single mapped trees and bushes.

5 senconds on #12 - didn't spot the control behind a boulder/bush until I was right on top of it, and then had to wait for someone else to punch. If I'd seen it sooner I coulda beat them to the box...

20 seconds (HUGE) on #14. Single tree next to a hedgeline. Misread the map and went offline along the wrong veg boundary.

2-3 seconds on # 15 - bad route down the only hill to the beach (took the trail which added a small amount of distance).

2-3 seconds at 19 to find the go control on the map.

1-2 seconds in the finish shoot avoiding a collision with a girl that cut suddenly into my path.

Was happy with the run on the Middle Course, except for the bad ankle sprain. By the time I went to bed last night, a major goose egg had grown on the low, outside right ankle, turning a nasty shade of bruise. Was worried that I'd wake up today and not be able to walk on it.... but out of bed it was only a little painful as long as I didn't flex the ankle laterally.

Definitely did not forget my active ankles today.

All through the warm up though, a bit of a ping on every step. Just ignore it, maybe it will go away.

Orienteering race (long) 1:57:00 intensity: (54 @0) + (18:37 @1) + (31:13 @2) + (43:31 @3) + (21:25 @4) + (1:20 @5) ***** 6.11 mi (19:09 / mi) +35m 18:49 / mi

Long course

Started off poorly and got worse from there. I just didn't connect with the map as well as I did yesterday. Not sure why since it was the same area, same terrain, etc. The ankle wasn't much of a factor, but I was being careful about foot placement.

Start -> 1: surprised to have what appears to be another easy first leg. Up the trail and cut in. Cut just a bit early, didn't cost me much. Turns out there were several controls in this area, so a small nav error could easily have led to a mis-punch (Mike M).
