NavX Briones 4 hour Map Trek
I was concerned when I got to the staging area, because around this time last year this was the location of an ultralong O course, where I came in overtime after I literally fell asleep from exhaustion while crossing under a barbed wire fence for 15 minutes at about 3.5 hours in (and 200m from the aid station).
This year was different. This year I am better conditioned and I could hold it together for the four hours needed without my body needing a time out.
With the Score-O format, I got my map an hour before the start and plotted out what I thought was a reasonable outer loop to connect most (1800/2500) points (values ranged from 30 to 100 [of which there were three]). I then plotted in a different color an inner loop for however much time, if any, I had left after the first pass. As usual, I marked where I believed I should be at the end of each hour, and I picked three outer and three inner controls as bypass candidates if I wasn't meeting my time hacks.
My time estimates were pretty decent:
1hr mark: 1hr exactly
2hr mark: 1:53
3hr mark: 2:35
4hr mark: 3:05
With my outer loop complete, I did not return to the start but cut directly into the inner loop, picking up points alongside trails. With about 35 minutes left, I made the decision to continue on my marked inner loop path even though I realized I would not make it all the way through. In retrospect, if I had modified my plan I could have picked up a 70 point control without the steep down and up of the route I chose. However, it would have involved some of the steepest downhill of the course, so pros and cons. The hills out here are must-walks in many places, and while contouring was often my friend, on such hills the side slope took a toll on my feet and ankles. Navigationally the course was not very hard; I lost much more time from hesitation as I correctly approached controls than I did from lost map contact or having trouble finding the hung-to-be-visible points.
I collected 1800/1800 points from my primary (outer) loop and 340/700 points from my backup (inner) loop.
I ended up in 3rd place, 200 points behind the winner. I could envision how I could have run a more perfect course and come in first, and that might very well happen on the next map trek. Still, it's a comfort knowing that my strategic mistake late in the course to pursue a downhill 30 pointer instead of cutting right to a 70 pointer ultimately did not make a placing difference. This course was intense but rewarding!
