| Was on my way to Milford to run a 5km race. The weather bomb II flooding and debaurchery meant that I was late. So flagged it and did something more important. | ||
Tuesday Jul 29 | ||
| Running - Off road 50:00 [3] | ||
| Ran around the farm to inspect storm damage. Bloody hell. I'd only just finished fixing all the fences. I can't remember the ground being wetter, If one more greeny dork tells me that growing animals is an ineffecient use of land because it uses up 4 times as much water than rice, than they are invited to come here with a bucket and start shoveling it back to their rice paddie. | ||

| Intended to chuck the bike on the windtrainer after dinner and shelter from the weather bomb. Went to get everything set up and the bike was missing a seat and chain....didn't take much encouragement to flag that one. | ||

| Orienteering race 1:15:00 [2] | ||
| WOC Relay. I was the most amazed person to wake up feeling a massive amount better than yesterday, and thankfully for the team, start the relay. I still wasn't 100% though and the lack of food digestion really showed. Micheal and Ross both had awesome runs, It was a bit of a dream come true to be running the relay for NZ at WOC in this strong position. Quite gutting therefore that I couldn't really run. Was proud of myself just to complete the course so that NZ had a result (didn't think we would yesterday) but must admit I panicked on no.1 and lost a minute. other than that it wasn't that hard a course (especially at my pace) ...just a little steep. Would have been fun if I was on form.
Couldn't even enjoy the Banquet. Had to leave Jimbo at about 8:30pm to fly the "kiwi" flag. Sad.
Saturday Jul 19 | ||
| Note | ||
| (sick) | ||
| Very sick. Managed to drag myself out to watch the long final in the morning. Wished I hadn't. Managed to sleep alot that arvo and night. But couldn't eat or drink much. I thought my chances of starting the relay tommorrow were about 2%. | ||
Friday Jul 18 | ||
| Orienteering race 45:00 [4] | ||
| Spectator Races. P8 course. Damn all Kiwis bet me. I'm slow. | ||
Thursday Jul 17 | ||
| Orienteering race 38:00 [5] | ||
| WOC middle Qual. Going ok until the second to last one in the forest. Panicked when it didn't fit. Wasn't gonna qualifier anyway. | ||
| Orienteering race 40:00 [5] | ||
| WOC spectator races, Much more fun, tired and found big rock not mapped close to my small rock. That let Chris thrugh to beat me by 7 seconds. damn. | ||
Wednesday Jul 16 | ||

Tuesday Jul 15 | ||
| Orienteering race 1:15:00 [5] | ||
| WOC long qual. didn't feel fast. Navigated pretty average, choosing two conservative (slower) routes. | ||
| Orienteering 20:00 [3] | ||
| Gentle jog from the accommodation to clear the acid from legs and mind. | ||
| C • acid on the mind.. too much... 1 | ||
Monday Jul 14 | ||
| Orienteering 50:00 [1] | ||
| Stroll around the model map with a few stride outs. Map was pretty sweet and easy. More how I expected the long to be, so all good. the whether is nice and overcast too, so will be going hard tommorrow. 9.36 start...so thats a damn early start for someone on summer holiday.
Poor tom had to leave early this morning back to nz. I think he had a good but brief WOC experience though. Quite different atmosphere from JWOC I think so good for him to feel it. Our days hear are fairly dull, I've got into the habit of nanna naps and am reading a book about Nigerian war.

| Event: WOC 2008 | ||
| Orienteering 1:20:00 [1] | ||
| Reran on the long map for swedish trials. started running trying to read the map more and pick everything up and be more accurate in the circle. then reran some stuff and walked home really analyzing everything trying to predict the most visible terrain feature. Can do it slowly but still pretty scared about running and reading the map at the same time...let alone racing. Need to work on my confidence in the next few days. | ||
Wednesday Jul 9 | ||
| Orienteering 50:00 [4] | ||
| Orienteering intervals 5 to 10 minutes. back at the swedish model map. so much better this time...but map not really up to day and a lot easier running than the other maps.
5 min walk from our accomodation is the largest supermarket I have ever been in. Most of our recreation time is spent wondering the isles trying to escape and waiting for ross and maja to get out.

Tuesday Jul 8 | ||
| Orienteering 1:40:00 [2] | ||
| jogging-walking and some running around the middle trail map again. Put out a few controls for Julian and realised that at an amazingly slow pace it the map does make sense and it isnt bingo at all. but it seems quite impossible to do any of this at speed. Later on I started to get into the flow a bit more and ended up getting to grips with it a speed too....before a completely bingo control, that I went back and tried walking approaches from different attack points. still wasn§t happy with it. Hopefully they don§t use anything like that at woc because the rest of the course seemed very reasonable.
Rest of the kiwis arrived this afternoon and our coach-manager Jim russell aka Jimbo from aussie. good to catch up with thom and hear of the good times in sweden.
Monday Jul 7 | ||
| Note | ||
| Travelling took a lot longer than I thought it would so no training but lots of sleeping, back up to czech on the train. | ||
Sunday Jul 6 | ||
| Orienteering 10:00 [2] | ||
| feeling a little better today, managed about three and a half long controls, before walking much further home.
Then had a huge sleep back at the accomodation as everyone else went home.
Saturday Jul 5 | ||
| Orienteering race 3:45 [2] | ||
| Mikro Sprint race, Hungarian event centre. I was still asleep when I started and stuffed it up at the start so not the win today. | ||
| Note | ||
| I was feeling a bit rough today before the middle race, so did a Jamie and went to the furthest point before walking back to the finish. | ||
| C • solid 1 | ||
Friday Jul 4 | ||
| Orienteering race 24:00 [5] | ||
| Cool sprint race, except it was a middle distance. | ||
Thursday Jul 3 | ||
| Orienteering race 1:35:00 [4] | ||
| Bit of an easy long hot course really. Wish I was the Fornicator...he would have carved up today. One bingo control that I missed and a few hesitations but other than that I ran ok and am pretty stuffed and slightly hung. Some random hungarian followed (very blatently) all the way from no 4 to the finish. He even stopped at drinks and route choice legs for me to work it out. At one point we hit a track and I thought we were some where else ...he showed me where we were and said "just go straight" I didn't I went the wrong way down the track. He still followed me and waited for me to relocate properly. | ||

Wednesday Jul 2 | ||
| Orienteering race 1:55:00 [4] | ||
| Its always good to be on the podium and get a prize. Its just better when your at the top and not 25 min behind in sixth.
still struggling with random control points in the middle of nothing and green. In particularly my height judgment was very bad...this is something I normally pride myself on so was a bit frustrated. Also I didn't understand the system and didn't find any plastic bags when given the map just before the start. Was sweating like a pig and it was inevitable that my map would callapse in such green forest. Didn't think I would be able to finish...but it ended up only costing me a bit on two controls at the end. Forest was very green and rocky, which is perfect training for Czech. Unfortunatly there would be a massive advantage from starting in tracking and there where a shitload of stinging nettles. Paced myself well and despite the heat was still running well on the flat at the end. Through the rough forest and up hills I was pretty pathetic though.

Here you can follow the aussies WOC team. There report on the races on the map I was also racing is interesting. I'm not the only one struggling with it.
