| Swelling is down this morning on my foot. I'm not 100% sure now, whether it's gout, or that running while I had gout somehow injured the joint. Probably a combination of the two. The pain isn't like gout, it's more of a stiffness in te AM and a shooting pain, that starts up after I've been on my feet for a while, usually in the afternoon. Gout usually hits in the middle of the night and is a constantly increasing pain. Nevertheless, I plan on going to the orienteering practice this afternoon. |

| First attempt at real Line-O with a real O-map...wow, was it ever hard. Map contact was very important. Started out heading for the finish...I didn't understand the French instructions...after that embarrassing start, I followed pretty well, until I got to a rather complex trail area, with exercise equipment along it. Something just wasn't matching up. I lost about 22' trying to relocate. When I did, I ran into another pair, with one of the course setters. We were on the right trace. We stuck together, but then, I started feeling like they weren't heading in the right direction-things just weren't matching up well enough, so I parted company and located the logging road, for the next 2km things were flowing well. I was coming up on controls, locating features, and starting to feel like I was in pretty good contact with the map...then I ran into half of the pair I had left earlier, he was frustrated, and about ready to quit and head in, he wasn't 100% sure, we were where I thought we were, so every feature we reached involved a discussion. At one point he wanted to head north, instead of south that our trace indicated. We came up on a control at an anthill, and didn't take a good azimuth out of it, so we ended up popping out on the road too far south, but right at the location we needed to go back into the forest. That was confusing, since had been walking on a trail at that point which we couldn't place on the map. Once I convinced him it was the good entry point we finally located the creek after a few 100m, which led us all the way into the finish.... That was a great way to learn to read the map. |

| Before the relay, I had another attack of gout, which got worse after the race. Apparently, the Dr. thinks that a combo of fairly rapid weight loss and dehydration is concentrating the uric acid in my blood, triggering the attacks. My blood test levels are within the normal range between attacks, but just. Since the relay, I can't seem to kick it again, so I'm trying to stay super hydrated and take the meds to break the cycle.
No running for a while to try to get back to normal. I'm beginning to think that I need to keep increasing the dose, to get the same effect...before it was one pill, then two...I wonder if I'm building up a tolerance to the meds? |

| I ran the second leg of this race, which was ~15km. Followed my race plan pretty well. First km is primarily downhill, so adrenaline and that made for a fast split. After that, I followed my race plan which was an easy warm up for 4km then put on a bit of gas and run a long tempo, dictated by the hills. I picked up 17 places for our team, ended up out kicking a guy I had just passed 100m earlier at the finish. I didn't hear him coming up till the last 10 meters or so. Overall very happy with the effort. I was nervous with my gout flare up, and each time my left foot hit the ground it hurt, but the effort really felt easy. I was talking and joking the whole way with no difficulty except on the climbs. |
