Orienteering (Sprint) 29:00 [3] 2.56 km (11:20 / km)
shoes: Brooks Trance

Sprint at West Point. I didn't exactly sprint it....

Overshot control 3 but saw control 7, so I guess it was somewhat useful :-).

Then decided to skip the trail to 9 and instead climb over two giant uncrossable cliffs...and then overshoot it and get caught by the river! Yikes.

Also got stuck in a long spiral of staircases instead of running through the parking lot.

Beautiful day, beautiful views, great map and course, but I honestly did an atrocious job of focusing, making decisions, keeping the 1:5000 scale in mind, and pretty much orienteering in general.

There are more seconds on the time, but I can't remember them.

Orienteering 50:35 [4] 4.2 km (12:03 / km)
shoes: Brooks Trance

I think the time is about right.

Middle at West Point. It was a much cleaner run than the sprint! I was fairly slow at running on the hills and rocks and I lost some time hesitating, but at the same time I felt more focused and made fewer random, irrational mistakes.

My biggest error was on #6...I had to relocate by using the relative position of the cliffs along the road, but it took a little while.

Legs 1 and 9 especially had a lot of different possible routes, and it was fun to compare them afterwards with other people.

...and I liked sprinting down the ski slope :-). It felt fast. I kind of wanted to climb the hill again and roll down it, but I was a little afraid of getting spiked.

Run (long) 54:11 [3] 7.0 mi (7:44 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Trance

Bolin Creek run from south campus and then back to north campus.

7.34/ 7.42/ 7.43/ 7.29/ 7.34/ 7.46/ 8.22

Core 4:59 [3]

Ping-pong 30:00 [3]

Ping-pong with Jana, Zach, & Josh :-). Played singles vs. Jana (she won), and then vs. Zach (I won). Then Josh came and we rallied for awhile while Zach and Jana played, and then we all played several rounds of doubles.

Josh kept alternating corners and then he'd double back and hit it to the same corner, and I had to sprint back and forth a lot. Good fun.

The blister on the bottom of my foot is getting ridiculously big...and it's entirely from playing barefoot ping-pong. This is strange, since I've never really gotten blisters from running.

Run (woods intervals) 34:45 [3] 3.04 mi (11:26 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Trance

Mallory and I tried out woods intervals today!

4x 3:00 runs in the woods alternating with 4x 3:00 runs on trails, and then a jog back to campus.

I was slow at the woods-running. It's also hard to find a section of woods here that's big enough to really get into the run.

The park is a long strip along a stream, so going off the trail mostly means running up a hill on one side or the other.

Towards the end I found a section that's flatter, and I'll probably try to run there for woods intervals next time.

Also for next time: gaitors and spikes :-).

Run 1:24 [4] 0.4 km (3:30 / km)
shoes: Brooks Trance

I ran 4x 400 on the track before the woods intervals.

football 20:00 [1]
shoes: Brooks Trance

I actually scored a touchdown today. I caught the ball, and people told me to run, so I did.

Core 6:00 [3]

bicycles, crunches, slow bicycles, hip-ups, windshield wipers, side crunches. Push-up pyramid.

Orienteering 1:30:00 [3]
shoes: orienteering shoes

BOK Score-O at Birkhead. This is my first time orienteering on this map, and it was good fun.

The loop I chose probably wasn't optimal point-wise, since the cluster that I didn't get was worth a bit more than the cluster at the end of my loop that I did get, but c'est la vie.

I have no idea how many kilometers it was. Many, I think.

My route was somewhat wandery, but there was just one atrocious control that I overshot and then had to relocate to.

Fun variation: at a couple of the controls, there were additional 'decoy' controls on parallel features...and we didn't have control codes, so based on the control description you had to pick the right one. If you chose wrong, you'd have whatever score you would have gotten subtracted from your total :-).

Orienteering (control pick-up) 40:00 [3]
shoes: orienteering shoes

I picked up the furthest-out four controls plus two decoys. The time is made up, but it's probably rougly correct--it took quite awhile. They were really far away, and also I took this weird arcing route to get back because I just set my compass roughly southwest and ran as fast as I could.

...unfortunately, I went far more west than south and hit a clear-cut hillside that I figured was the out-of-bounds on the side of the map. From there, it was pretty much a straight shot south to the assembly area, but I wasn't 100% sure of my location and it was a long time to be out-of-contact with the map.

Orienteering (control pick-up) 45:00 [3]
shoes: orienteering shoes

Picked up the last 12 controls closer in.

Also got a bit sunburned...I didn't think it would be such a long time in the woods today.
